Afterwards I found myself in the Champion District and at the bar Earth Angel. Its here I noticed I need to order everything from these establishments. That seemed daunting until I realized they checkmark what I buy.

This gets way easier later because there's a perk you can get that makes it so you can eat even while full on health, for the record.

Hey all!

Yep this isn't dead, I've been trying to clear some switch games out to trade in to afford a few things. I am not much of a collector and always prefer to use trade credit at gamestop or craigslist sales to pay for games. Anyway!

A.I got 90+ in all of the Karaoke

This didn't take too long and I really enjoyed the production, especially the drama in the Bat...something song. thought that was great.

B.Afterwards I headed towards the shrine because I had a bunch of CP. I traded my CP in for some abilities, I hope this is the *point* of these points. Also a strange Clown Yakuza gave me a bunch of stuff. Mostly collectible looking items, medicine, and plates to sell

C.The next place I ended up was the mini Sega Arcade to the south, there I played the claw game and quickly hated my life. I peaked at the guide and saw I have to get 15 of these prizes. Oh god...

D.After this I ended up at the Mahjong parlor. I have long feared this game, I know of Shanghai so I know the tiles decently from recognition. But the actual game? god help me. I know how to Pon for a set of 3

What I dont get is when I have a full bar of 3s or sequential 3s and a 2 that I dont instantly win. Am I supposed to avoid Pon? This is where it falls apart for me.

SPOILERS!!!!

Strange thing to notice is that kiryu and Majima even though are Yakuza they NEVER kill anyone(at least in these 3 games). Yeah seems really strange but that is how it goes. Even though it seems they kill people they never do that in story.

In general, yes. Stealing tiles with pon or chi removes several options that you can use to win. It's useful though if you're aiming for a certain hand, like if you're trying to get the Full Straight off the completion list.

Mahjong is a game that takes a very long time to learn and legit decades to master. Just starting out, a nice rule of thumb is that you should never steal a tile unless you know exactly why you're stealing it and what specific win condition(s) you're building toward. Doing otherwise you're likely to lock yourself out of any possible winning hands far more often than not. Plus, having a closed hand is an easy way to meet the minimum conditions for winning without knowing all the really specific hands.

Yeah I would uh, really not recommend going 100% focused on gambling completion at the cost of everything else. The great thing about Yakuza is those games will always be there and you can play them whenever you fancy, plus there are other things that open up later that you may want to dump your time into rather than these established long-running foreign games of chance you're learning the rules for from scratch.

That said, mahjong is awesome so I'll answer all of your questions as soon as I'm at a keyboard.

These are called "Dora." You may see that term mentioned when you or an AI tallies up their hand value. Basically they're a bonus point indicator that add one "han" (point of value) to your hand per bonus tile you have. Note that the bonus tile is not actually the tile in the middle itself, but the tile that comes next in that sequence. So if you see a three sticks tile, any four stick tiles you have in a winning hand will net a bonus.

It depends! Kan is the one kind of "steal" that you can do on a tile you personally draw. If you perform a "closed kan" and form a four-of-a-kind with a tile you drew yourself, your hand will still count as closed and receive no point penalty. Of course, your opponents will still receive some information about your hand, but you don't really need to worry about that against these AI.

Wind tiles are typically only valuable to you if they're either of your seat wind or the round wind. Outside of those, they're only good to you in incredibly specific hands and that's why you'll see the AI (and many IRL players) toss them quickly.

Nope! As a matter of fact, if you draw your winning tile yourself, it's called "Tsumo" and nets you an additional han when tallying your points.

The game's tutorial pages help with this a little bit, but since you are apparently really trying to get a hold of the game quickly, this might be a good resource. Below is a link to all of the "yaku" (win conditions) in the game. How you win big is by constructing a hand that fulfils multiple of these conditions. (Though some of the really specific ones are more rigid but basically clean everyone out if you can manage to make them, I wouldn't suggest focusing on those as a newbie.)

The video below is also an *incredible* breakdown if you're looking to learn the game from zero, but it's pretty long, as Mahjong (specifically the Japanese "riichi" style played in Yakuza) is a very complex game.

Oh yeah, and one other Yakuza-specific tip to help you early on. Every once in a while when you feel like your hand is nearing completion, press square to see if you can "Riichi." (The option won't appear if you're not prepared to actually take the action.)

Declaring Riichi bets some of your points and locks your hand in, and you'll get the option to steal or declare Tsumo as soon as your winning tile shows up! Even better, if you have multiple directions your hand can go, it will show you how many of your winning tiles are left in the wall and inform your discard decision.

Substory Password Protected
I legit laughed at Kiryu going thru this nonsense password acquiring it and then being like nah I'm not buying anything. I did go back and bought some fish for some reason.

Substory The Show Must Go On
Ran down the street and encountered this substory. While it was a very funny story about understanding movie lingo to film some strange scene with an actress and food....I didnt quite get this one. A lot of the dialog on why they needed Kiryu was a bit messy. Fun but true filler sense here.

Substory Dominatrix
I cant remember the name off hand here but this opened up this substory I was looking for earlier. I wasn't a big fan of this mostly as it just was kinda awkward throughout. And creepy when we involved children at the end to teach this woman.

Substory Porn House
To get this one I had to watch 3 of the softcore porn videos. I just skipped thru as I was streaming on twitch. This unlocked a sidestory where this one guy is obsessed with this one girl. We watch the porn together which was downright hilarious then he asks me to find her. Shes around the corner so I grab him and he acts like a creepy stalker. Of course. Turns out shes not the idol, then we beat up some dudes. I really should mentioned no matter the circumstances beat up some dudes is always thrown in. I almost wish they embraced the gagness of it. After fighting she declares she cant date our stalker dude cause she wants the Kiryu.

Substory Miracle Johnson
This I wasn't really expecting. A full on Michael Jackson thriller recreation of him moonwalking while helping him fend off zombies. This was weird, and I loved it premise wise. The only issue is execution wise it felt sloppy and I didn't enjoy it. But conceptually, love it.

Minigames
I vowed no mahjong so instead I tried some other stuff to see how horrifying this will get

-Batting Cages seem neat but honestly its harder batting than MLB 19 the Show. What in the world. This is gonna be trouble

-I then played Space Harrier, yeah that theme is just the best

-Good news is Bowling strikes is easy for the completion list, bad news the minigame needed to make money for the challenge list is really tough for me. I feel this is doable though

I have a bunch of sidestories still to go before moving on with the story but I feel a good chunk of progress. This was 4 hours of progress.

For the batting cages Kiryu's animation changes when it's time to swing, he tenses up and stops moving the bat. It's something you have to react to almost immediately but it can help.

This might be the biggest barrier to 100%, then. The hardest parts of the dancing game took me a lot of attempts, I still (mostly) enjoyed it the whole time, but it can get tough.

Dance Dance Yakuza
The dancing minigame trophy is unlocked for completing all songs on any difficulty. That itself likely took me an hour or more. I sort of get it but I'm doing it all off visual, can't hear those beats. There was a guy who challenged me, I barely won but couldn't beat the second dance off and I know there is a third. I dunno not throwing in the towel but this looks bleak

Space Harrier update
Ended up going back to max her friendship out, I got all the way to Stage 4 but fell short of the HS goal by about 500,000. This seems doable

Outrun Update
I wanted to get this friendship done but I suck at Outrun, the real reason I need to mention this the girl challenging Kiryu to beat her high score and she'll do something for him. Which he translated to sex and then we got lots of thirsty crotch zooming. I was cracking up

Mushroom Man
I encountered this guy in alley selling Magic Mushrooms only to find out no hes just a weirdo selling mushrooms in a dark alley. I moved this forward a bunch but wasn't able to finish it. I think it was funny for a quick gag but not too into this one

Search Cop
I also finished off the friendship of Stop N Search cop. Wow this was actually pretty good, and that sad song. Real haunting, got me to complete stop what I was doing on stream and go whoa.

A typical cop story but honestly the right direction to make me invested in its short bit. I enjoyed this end.

Shop Girl
Back to a nothing story. Mihos story about coming up with a new idea for corporate really uh well it did nothing for me. Not bad just there.

Bowling
I have learned to hit 2 of the crazy splits but I need 5 to really make cash here. I also advanced the Bowling story as far as it went atm.

I have cleared 2/3 challenges surprisingly, but this was on easy. I'm still trying to do as much as possible but doing normal or hard for 3 stars? might be out of my skill range

you definitely have to learn not to pay attention to the music though, the prompts dont really match up to the music in the most intuitive way (though they arent random either)

End of Chapter 2
I got the Beast fighting style and it might be my favorite although it leaves you open to a ton of attacks. This actually opened up the docks for me for training, but also FISHING. Woo? Actually normally I hate fishing minigames but this one isn't too bad.

This led me to tracking down the real estate group, which honestly was a ton of wandering until I got a tip to check out this near abandoned plaza with one single business left. The place was littered with hobos and when I got to the bar there was a very scared man with his wife and child. In walks a guy named Odo, Kiryu immediately calls him out as Yakuza. Odo throws bribe money at the bar guys face saying thats all he'll get then he leaves with money everywhere in the room. Then no sad story of all a sudden from the barkeep instead he starts picking up the money laughing, he held out to be bribed and is booking it. Hm

I then get some tips to find the homeless and they send me on an alcohol quest. I already had the gold champagne for the one guy for the trophy at least. After 25 mins of running around I deliver it all and just basically confirm my own information. Though I do learn of the stronghold of this place

I head there and get confronted by Odo, Kiryu reveals his invitation from Odos boss and we're told where to go. What this actually leads to is a pretty tough boss fight with Odo. After its revealed this part was all a test and the reason for that test is because the person that told this guy to seek Kiryu out was Kazma the adopted yakuza dad in prison. Ok makes sense

Then the real estate guy tells me that the person that owns the lot he wants....is him? wait what? Then things get weird and he flicks his hand to shut off all power for 30 seconds. What in the world is going on?

Well I'm not getting those answers as the scene shifts to a club with an older guy and a young brash business guy. They are spending too much money and I start getting to hear about this amazing boss of the club. Then a guy starts feeling up a woman and causing a scene, and then this happens

I wasn't expecting any of that not this to be Majima. After this I find out hes ex-yakuza kicked out for (to be learned later I guess) and wants back in so he has to earn a bunch of money and profit off this club. The real Majima seems to be a violent psychopath. The yakuza guy whose got him by the balls is taking his best girl so Majima sets off to take someone elses best girl.

I made it about 5 feet before encountering a crazy old martial artist. We end up fighting and he runs off. I guess he'll be teaching me fighting styles. Speaking of, Majimas main thug style? way better than Kiryus default style.

So with no money to my name I ran around
-turning in CP points
-got the free items from clown man at shrine
-and started eating out restaurants for more cp

I dont have a detailed update at like 4am but I'm still in chapter 3 doing Majima substories about 45 hrs in

-Majima is 50X better than Kiryu, the guys got all the style and the crazy

-I uh didnt know how to use weapons, laughed out loud how crazy good they are. Especially at stealing money

-I seem to struggle more with Mr Shakedown with Majima more, I've beaten him a few times but its intense while Kiryu stomps them.

-I have 6 substories left in this chapter before I advance the game

-I'm still early but this is becoming one of my favorite ps4 games

I am now 56 hrs into this game

I have just concluded Majimas Chapter 3 and 4. I had a blast with his sidequests, maybe even more than Kiryus. Except fishing for hours for that damn soft sea turtle (I caught 45 crayfish while trying to grab that). Majimas third style is absolute amazement. I started bursting out laughing when he started fighting like Eddie Gordo.

Majimas encounter at the food stand in the triangle park revealed his backstory mostly. I cant tell if it was his idea or a guy in the yakuza but him and his 'sworn brother' went to shoot up a rival clan giving trouble 3 years ago. Hes ambused by the pinky guy Kiryu beat up in chapter 1. Then hes locked up in a yakuza blacksite, his eye gouged out and left there for a year. What wild!

Also even crazier is his sworn brother went in like freaking Zolo from One Piece except with guns, and killed 18 people without being shot. Hes apparently in prison and is gonna get out (majima thinks) to kill majima. So thats why Majima wants back in??? What?

Well we are tasked to kill some guy whose running prostitutes and beating women, sounds good lets kill him. We get our lead by going to a telephone club, and talking to women until we get a college age girl. Majima then goes on a date with one, its an obvious introduction to some dating mechanic. When we get to a club shes attacked by a guy who got jumped by her pimp after this rando roofied her.

We beat him up and she gives us the location of the guy she works for. He is looking for a person with a Bat tattoo...weird. But even weirder they are painting this guy as a savior of women, somethings not adding up.

We end up in a massage office and no ones there but then bam a woman, and shes obviously blind. And selective hearing I guess, later she hears pins drop but she cant hear majima breathing and shimmying around at first. Weird

Majima convinces her shes a client and he gets a massage. He falls asleep and wakes up and then the boss comes. Majima and Makoto have a standoff, Makoto is decked in yakuza tats. He chucks a needle at Majimas crotch. Then we have an epic battle after sending the blind woman away

This battle ends and is interuppted by the Yakuza, shocker. Actually wait they arent with Makoto? Wtf? And then they drop the bomb that this isnt Makoto, she is. Wait what?! How? Whats going on. Makoto is murdered and some yakuza take the woman. We fight 3 goons and then chase the others down to get her back. We save Makoto and go thru a stealth section to the river, this sucked btw.

At the river the first yakuza we fought in the office tells us shes worth a fortune. I'm super lost. We get to an alley and shes scared clinging to Majimas leg. Then I see it in Majimas eyes, hes gonna kill her. He draws the knife and the chapter ends

Well Chapter 5 now as Kiryu, we get clothes and man how the hell do I go back to this? We end up doing Odas business 101 course. After we chase out a squatter who was just trying to play his genesis in his trash heap in peace. Andddddd then I stopped right as I got the real estate stuff starting to unlock.
