Thank you for the patience. I'm back now! ...Mostly because FL81's ranking topic has started and I was really looking forward to trying to listen to everything from it as the songs were posted and the promise of so many new songs in that topic is motivating me to finish my own backlog.

Going to start at the most recent post and work backwards.

Priscilla Chan - Thousands of Songs: 8. Great voice and it hits a lot of the right notes for me--particularly enjoy the way she uses a metaphor of singing with someone instead of anything too specific.

Third Bear: 7.5 ; I rather wanted a change of pace musically and a subdued guitar song like this is different than most the songs posted here (the fact that the type of music I ask for is typically the exact opposite of this is likely the reason for this).

Vivi - Moon Revenge: 6.5 ; wasn't expecting an acoustic cover of a Sailor Moon song, but it's nice.

Hinokuma Ran: 3-ish. Something about the hyperactive nature of the song & video makes me feel exhausted from the first note.

Hitona: The song's reminding me of one of the Japanese versions of that Rhapsody song I mentioned back at Daffy Duck in Hollywood's writeup:

https://youtu.be/F5TpTU-rWZ8?t=60

Which isn't really fair as they don't exactly have a lot in common besides bland surface level comparisons of "soft Japanese songs", but it's still where my mind goes. I'd say it's somewhere in the 7 range, +/- .3 points depending on mood at the time.

Hareru - Say Meow Meow: I dunno. It's cute and meow-meow-meow is going to get stuck in my head all night, but I'm not really in a cat mood at the moment--try again next month? Suppose I'll just give it a 7 for now. Sevens or better for everyone!

...Except Hinokuma Ran, obviously.

Kano - : 6-ish. It's good and emotional and what not, but I don't know that it's something I really want to add to any playlists or listen to on a regular basis... think this is one of those songs where the rating would fluctuate wildly based on when on when I listened to it... wouldn't be surprised if there were a day where the rating were more like "3/10, too quiet to leave a lasting impression" or another day where it was all 9/10 super emotional. Today it's sorta in the middle, which seems good enough.

RuriYuri - Happy Halloween: 5.2-ish. I liked the audio skipping (around the 1:50-ish mark, IIRC, which I probably don't), but the rest of the song felt fairly ordinary and I'm already confusing this track with Merry Halloween in my mind, which is odd because I literally just listened to this.

Megururi - VR: 5. The song is fine, but I have a very hard time remembering anything about it. It's one of those songs that vanishes from my mind completely after it ends, leaving nothing but a vague feeling that I just listening to something somewhat pleasant?

The backing music reminds me of Renai Circulation for some reason:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDR0JMyoQGA

I haven't thought of that song in years, but I think it was popular on this board quite some time ago? I think there was a best anime op contest and I think this song did quite well, maybe even won? And whenever I try remembering VR (and, mind you, I just now listened to the song--TWICE) all I hear is "Fuwafuwaru, Fuwafuwari" and I know that's not even close to VR but I can't Renai Circulation out of my head.

Suisei: 5.1-ish. I want to like this more than I actually do. The voice is nice, I like how the opening is kinda lounge-ish, but I never really have much of a reaction to it? I start out at "oh, hey, this is kinda nice" and it never transitions to real enjoyment. I should like it, and it's nice, but just...nice.

Rime: Very short video, not much that can be said about it. Checked out a couple songs and wasn't exactly thrilled with them to be as nice as I can be about it.

Virtual Grandmother (feat. Kizuna Ai) - Senbonzakura: Ehh... I kinda already said I preferred Miku's version and synthesized voice, and this cover is getting further away from what I liked. It's an interesting take on the song and I don't want to disparage her talent, but... probably just a 5.

Now, I need to go hit the six songs over at VGMC before I let that backlog get out of hand again...

Yeah the way they've tried to differentiate her from kaf has been abysmal thus far. Still looking forward to the original songs they're very clearly getting Kanzaki Iori for, like with kaf, though.

Ryushen: 5. It's alright, but I have no particular reaction to him or the song choice.

Kotone & Ruki Roki - cLick cRack: 3. Just not much of a fan on any level; the song in general is too happy and dance-y, the kids choosing to go back to reality instead of staying in the fantasy is rather opposite of how I'd like things to go (not that I expected any other outcome), just...not my thing.

Kotone's solo song: 6-ish. I like the general atmosphere of the song and there are some great lyrics there, it lands in the general "dark, but not too dark" area I want songs to hit, but it's still not quite one of my favorites. Wouldn't mind revisiting it again at a later date though, might move up after a few more listens.

I also clicked a bunch of Yasuhisa Watanabe songs at random, but didn't find any that I really wanted to comment on. There wasn't anything bad I wanted to complain about, but there weren't any standouts that I wanted to force everyone to listen to either. Just a bunch of good songs, which was a fine way of spending the night, just not especially thrilling to talk about.

Unrelated to anything, but I've had both versions of Gary's theme from Pokemon Puzzle League stuck in my head all day:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHh8haLa3pA

Neither version of it is exactly the best song, and it's blatantly the Pokemon World song from the dubbed anime, but I have quite a bit of nostalgia for it. Easily my favorite track from the game.

I guess I might as well throw in some last final songs so this doesn't end on a low note hopefully.

Ryushen x Yumeoi - Pretender
https://youtu.be/gZyJ1WoS82E
This one's an unofficial merging of two related covers that came out on the same day. They're both somewhat up there (like near top 5 best) individually but I think I like them more here. Somehow better than other actual duet covers.

Ryushen x Yumeoi - Pretender: Hmm... somewhere between 7.5 & 8, but I'm feeling generous right now, so let's go ahead with the 8 tonight.

Voices go together surprisingly well, especially for being an unofficial pairing. The original version of the song has official English subtitles with some interesting lines--nothing super amazing, but wishing for different worldlines and personalities, it comes very close to pushing certain buttons of mine.

[EDIT: To clarify, I'm praising the lyrics in general, not trying to draw any distinctions between the suggested song and the original. Only watched the original version to get the lyrics displayed alongside the song, though the original did turn out to be rather good itself. ]

Souya Ichika - Pretender: 7.4 feels about right. It's not bad, but I like the duet version & the original version more, which likely hurts this a bit.

Shirokaden x Amenosei - Teo: 4.9. It's a good video, but I'm not wild for either of the two singers here and I don't really care about the lyrics. On the positive side, I actively dislike the original Hatsune Miku version of the song, so it's likely I just don't like the song no matter who or what is performing it.

...well that wasn't actually a positive comment, but "I do like them significantly more than the original performer" was meant to be. Just came off harsher than I meant to after such a bad reaction to the original.

Shirokaden - Freedom Freezer: Somewhere between 3 and 5. My first thought is that it's a joke nomination that I don't particularly find funny, skewing it towards the low end... but I grudgingly have to admit that it's somewhat catchy and should probably give it at least a 5 anyway.

Shirokaden singing about a tree: I want to like Shirokaden, the articles I find about him are great (particularly that he has a rice cooker he pets instead of a cat), but I'm not really into any of these three songs. 4-ish.

I think that gets through all the VTubers. That leaves some random Bloodywood songs and the rest of Vola's album. Was going to take care of Bloodywood tonight, but my headphones are now complaining that they need to be charged, so that'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Disappointing, but not too surprising. Start Signal's description did say she would be discontinued if that video didn't get a million views and that was obviously beyond impossible.

Final Gift: It's cute. Would probably be better if I had any idea what she was saying (I know from the title that she was trying to give an introduction of some sort before being interupted by the song?) or had any clue what was with the lamb.

Bloodywood - Ari Ari: I think I'll go up to a 7 for this one. I don't like it nearly as much as Endurant and don't think the traditional aspects meshed as well with the metal this time--parts of it almost felt like a rave.dj result with two songs going at once.

...Mind you, I still like that sort of thing.

Bloodywood - Machi Bhasad: 7 too. It's interesting that the song was created for Beyond Good & Evil 2--kinda nice to know the band is popular enough to get into a big game like that, interesting to hear a song from the game so far in advance of its release (if it ever releases), and I think I like how the song is still a typical Bloodywood song and they didn't try to make it video game-y or anything weird.

Also tried a couple of their covers of pop songs, wasn't really a fan. Obviously not bad, but trading everything unique about the band to become a second-rate Jonathan Young doesn't really work. These gag covers are frankly beneath them. ...To be fair, I'm reasonably certain these were made before they became famous and it's not really fair to compare to them, but it doesn't make the covers any more interesting.

At the end of my last ranking topic, I quickly went over a list of songs that I would have nominated if I had to try nominating a full set of songs for a similar "anything goes" ranking topic. No real reason, but it gave me a chance to talk about songs I liked for a couple posts... I planned on doing that again here, but it turns out, finding 15 songs that I actively want to discuss is actually a lot harder than I thought it was.

So for now, just two songs that I've been listening to lately.

===============

1.Name: The Model
Origin: WWF Royal Rumble (Genesis)
Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Q3mUL2-0Tg

Score: 9

This song has become my newest obsession and I don't really know why. I've never had an opinion on Rick Martel and can't name a single match he was in, besides the infamous blindfold match with Jake Roberts. Didn't remember what his theme music sounded like and didn't remember that he was ever playable in anything. I was just listening to the Genesis soundtrack to laugh about Papa Shango's existence and was quite surprised to see The Model at all. So, it's not likely nostalgia has any part in my sudden interest in the song.

And yet, this may be my favorite Genesis song of all time? It's definitely my favorite as of this exact moment, at any rate. I love the song, I just can't figure out why.
===============

---------------------

===============

2.Name: Blade Man (MM3 PC) theme
Origin: Kackebango
Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKkLmE8C-Rw&t=313s

Score: 7-ish.

Actually not sure what to put for name or origin. It's a theme created for an 8-bit Deathmatch mod adding the PC Robot Masters to the game, but to the best of my knowledge, the songs were never actually used anywhere. Making this sort-of a fan song for an unofficial Robot Master from a game that didn't have any music.

I wish the themes had been uploaded separately instead of being in one giant video like this. It makes it harder to share any one song from the video than it needs to be.

Either way, I just wanted to say that this song is better than the theme given to MM10's unrelated Blade Man.

Ghost - Secular Haze: 6-ish. The backing music feels like an evil circus, which isn't an ambiance I'm really fond of--I wouldn't go as far as saying I actively dislike the concept of an evil circus, just not fond of it either.

I see from interviews that the music is supposed to be like freezing to death, but even knowing that's what they were going for, I just can't hear that in the least. And again that's not exactly bad--even if I don't connect with a song in the way the artist intended, if I get something from the experience it's good enough for me (see: Retrograde getting a high score even after learning that I loved it on the basis of a misheard lyric), but what the song feels like to me and what the artist was going for as so drastically opposed to each other, that it's confusing and it makes it hard to actually focus on the song itself. And all of that is without going into the lyrics at all! I respect the song; well performed, good video, interesting enough that I've voluntarily listened to it multiple times trying to properly understand it. Not one of my favorites or instantly top tier like Rats was, but I respect it.

Ghost - Dance Macabre: 8; I shouldn't like this as much as I do. The chorus repeats itself too many times and it's obviously a very dance-like song, but I don't mind it so much here. It hits the right notes for me; being inspired by the black plague keeps it from being too happy, the lines about bewitching in the moonlight gives it a supernatural flair, and it feels like an 80s pop hit that was lost in time.

I'm not sure if I prefer the original version or the Carpenter Brut remix, which leans heavier into the 80s disco asethetic. I'd probably give them both 8s.

...well being that I just listened to the original and the remix twice each to compare them, I suppose 8 is underselling it. Let's raise the scores to 9.

[Later: Eh, why not. Let's go to 9.5.]

Ghost - Square Hammer: 8.5. Well, I already admitted to having a bit of a soft spot for Satanic music. Lyrics about swearing to the devil are a bit of an obvious choice, but I still fully enjoyed it.

[Later: And move this up to a 9.]

Ao Hibiki New Song: Haven't clicked it just yet, but I'm worried this isn't going to go well. Immediately following two high scoring songs is rough; also, if she has a new design, then I'm worried she'll have lost her bunny appearance which is going to bias me against her.

*click*

Hey, she kept the bunny ears! And there are a lot of bows now... one on each bunny ear, and on each shoe, and on her chest, and on her left arm?

...Well works for me. I'm a bit concerned that she doesn't seem to have a left hand anymore (the open sleeve points at the camera occasionally and it's just a white void in there), but I think it's probably a slight improvement in appearance overall.

Song is nice. A bit more subdued than I expected from and it's nothing really complicated, but it's pretty. 8.

Continuing my posting of songs with two more picks:

3.K. K. Slider - Drive (Incubus Cover):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wgawy_lYxgo

Score: 8-ish at the moment.

I'm not entirely sure where I found this song. I can only assume this board was talking about people making K.K. Slider covers of songs at some point? It doesn't seem like anything I'd have found on my own, since I've never cared about Animal Crossing and didn't hear the actual song until years later. Either way, I've listened to this song quite a bit over the years and it still gets stuck in my head on a somewhat regular basis. It's got a good beat, I'm still a sucker for anything performed by fictional characters (especially fictional animals), I occasionally like listening to songs in fictional languages, and it's legitimately good enough to be worth listening to even without all the natural bias I have in its favor.

I'm a little burned out on it though, because I've listened to it so many times for such a long period of time.

I draw attention to it now because it's one of the more unique and unusual songs to get on any of my playlists, and because I'm sad how obscure it is. The video is coming up on its tenth anniversary and hasn't even hit 3,000 views yet. Sad face.

4.Disco Dino Dinosaur:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUQVA-I-aa8&t=393s

Score: Higher than even I would ever admit.

Everything about this is so...so terrible.

That there was a Hip Hop Flintstones album made in the first place.

That they actually have Wilma's voice actress (who would have been in her 70s) trying to talk/sing--in character--about Dino disco dancing.

The mental image of Dino disco dancing.

So horrible that I kinda love it? I do wish these songs were uploaded separately though... Disco Dino (so bad it's funny) is unfortunately followed by Freddy Funkstone (so horrible I want to claw my ears off after the first note), so... uhh... be sure to escape before that one plays?

[The sad part is that Freddy Funkstone may not even be the worst song on the album, but that's another topic. Disco Dino is the only track on the album that I like in any context.]

Sorry, was away a bit longer than I intended to be. The new Mega Man fangame Rock 'n Roll came out and distracted me for a few days (6/10; great concept, but needs more polish. Wait and see if the creator adds any updates, unless you're a big fan of MM fangames) and then I was sick for a while, but now I'm back!

Tat Ming Pair - Jin Tian Yin Gai Hen Gao Xing: 7.5. I wasn't sure what to expect going into the song; I'm usually a fan of their work, but I usually dislike Christmas music, so I couldn't guess if it was something I'd be likely to enjoy or not. Obviously, I liked it quite a bit!

It probably helps that it's less a Christmas song and more a somber look back at all the friends and family that have emigrated to other countries.

"As Pan Liangyuan himself said, this is a "tragic song without sadness", to quote a Google translation of someone's blog post about the song ; obviously, that's very much my type of song this year.

Random Stats from Spotify:

Alice in Chains was my most listened to band of the year. In spite of only listening to Rainier Fog on an endless loop, I apparently spent 8 hours listening to that one album this year.

...in retrospect, the nomination from that album (So Far Under) that started my love affair with the entire album probably should have had a higher placement than whatever it wound up at last year. I want to say 11th place?

Carly Rae Jepsen may have overtaken "Alice in Chains", if I had done this topic earlier in the year. I think she hit fourth most listened to artist, in spite of my not listening to any of her music before the topic started.

My most listened to song caught me off-guard. "Jimmy Ruffin - What Becomes of the Broken Hearted":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQU4sIn96M4

Not that I don't love the song, obviously, just...not what I would have expected. I spent so much time listening to Rainier Fog and The Mega's MM2 album that I wouldn't have expected that song to even hit the top 10.

Aaanywho...

Gotu Jim - LICHT UIT: 4-ish. I like the background music, but I'm not fond of the singing from either of them or the lyrics. Usually I like overly autotuned music (I think?), but I just wanted to hear an instrumental version.

Mozarella Try Cooking: 6.

Mochi Bear is the best, as they have the cutest voice for the song.

Original probably takes second. His voice is fairly distinct.

Demon Goat has the best character design and I want to give a bunch of points for that. Probably takes third by default.

Then Ruri, if only due to a bias due to preexisting familiarity with her.

The dog existed.

Cute song, though I probably should have spaced my listening out a bit instead of marathoning it all at once..

..oh and we have more of them to come...well too late to be reasonable now, so let's just get to it.

Cursed Parody: 2. I kinda expected such a thing to be right up my alley, but...no. Perhaps funnier with context on the singer or something.

Rap Version: 3-ish. Video was nice.

More tomorrow...I'm kinda tired right now and might see what I've missed over at the VGM topic. I know it's on break, but I missed a bit before it went on break and need to go make that up eventually.

....well don't need to, but want to, you know what I meant.

ah ok. i do kinda like the lyrics just because he sings about stuff i'm familiar with (he mentions taking the train to den helder and heerhugowaard, which are both places not too far from where i live). but yeah, i understand that the blatant misogyny (and glorification of drug use) isn't very appealing.

kind of a bummer to me that you translated the lyrics. i appreciate the effort but i was curious what you'd think of the song if you had no idea what the hell he was singing about!

i will add that that google translate translation is kinda bad. they translate "niet gepit, ik ga nu languit" as "don't piss, i'm going to stretch out now" while it actually means something like "haven't slept, i'm going to pass out now."

i agree that with a dead-on translation, you would still dislike the lyrics, but i'm just sayin'!

Ah, I do everything through the phone, so that would be why I know nothing about how the video should be seen. Tried it out on the computer; it's...different. Honestly, it gave me a bit of a headache, but I still feel I should give the video a point or two for uniqueness and originality.

And yeah, the automatic translations are far from perfect. I try not to rely on them when possible, but they can usually at least give a general sense of what the overall tone or vibe of a song is supposed to be, which is usually better than nothing.

pothole lottalove: The background image is 10/10. I love everything about it; I like her design and the jigsaw puzzle sky is wonderful. The mismatching pieces (wrong color, slightly askew) in front of and behind the sky give a rather nice 'reality breaking effect'.

Song is probably around an 8? It's nice and I do like her voice over the original vocaloid version (err...the vocaloid version was original right? Whatever. This is better than the first link that appears when you Google the song title).

way to too tomorrow: Not sure. It looks like something I'm supposed to love; the Game Boy-esque intro & outro should be pushing my buttons, but I find myself actually preferring the main part of the song which feels weird.

Leaning towards a 7, right now? It feels like a 7.

Won't Cry (Nonono): Leaning towards an 8. She has a great voice and the song works well for her, but it never fully resonates with me to hit true greatness. Very close though.

Feel like listening to something different before I break for the night, so let's skip ahead to NFUN's most recent pick:

IDOLA The Strange Fruits - 8.1. I'm not entirely sure why, I don't think I usually go for boss themes like this and don't recall caring for the few PSO series songs I've heard, but I'm in the mood for this tonight. Thank you.

Kohigashi Hitona: 4. The "Nanananananana" chorus is a bit much.

NoWorld: Somewhere between 5 & 6. Another track I'd prefer an instrumental version of. The rather relaxing music with the train ambiance was pleasing and I'd have liked to just let my mind wander for a bit.

Shiraki Leia: 2; sorry, but I really didn't care for this track. In her defense, I went to listen to the original song and only made it about 30 seconds before closing it, so I'll just blame the song itself rather than the singer.

MASAKARI: 6. Seems interesting.

Chocolate Eclair: 4.6; it's not bad, but it's not as cute or catchy as Mozzarella was and if you can't even be in the running for "best food related song posted at the end of this particular topic" then you probably shouldn't get too good of a score.

Stand Alone Complex: 7; It's good, but like MASAKARI, I think I really need at least a Google Translate gibberish to get a feel for what the song is supposed to be... judged completely devoid of context, it's good but I can tell that I'm missing a lot. I'll have to try to remember to see if lyrics get posted anywhere in a month or two; album seems too new for anything to be posted anywhere yet.

And I'll come back to this tomorrow; phone battery is about to die, which makes continuing a bit difficult at the moment.

Break the Distance - 5.2 ; it's not bad, but feels like it's missing a little something. I think it needs to be a little faster--not nearly as fast as YouTube's 1.25x speed makes it, but faster than it goes by default? I think I'd also like a slightly cuter singer like Hibiki, but then I tend to always wish she was performing instead of anyone else. (Well, except for the obvious trio of Kaf, poemcore, and Mei. And I suppose Fukuyamaster at times.

...alright, so maybe it's only the more recent ones that I'd replace with Hibiki.)

DANCE is the answer - Let's go with a 5.2 as well, since I don't entirely know which one I'd rank over the other at this moment. This song joins the "I think I'd prefer an instrumental version" ranks--there's something VGM-y about the backing music and I'd like to play around with it a bit, put the audio over assorted gaming scenes and see what I felt it worked with... but the singing makes that rather difficult.

Nijino Mahoro's song - I'm pretty sure this is the girl I was looking for! I was really tempted to ask you who the girl with the rainbow dress and red hat on the album cover was, but...didn't. And this singer had a cute voice, so she was the first person from the album that I cared enough to look up anything on and her introductor video has her wearing a suspiciously rainbow dress & red hat.

Let's go with a 7, though part of that may be bias due to the joy of finding her in the first place.

More tomorrow. I could press on, but it's rather late.

My apologies for the delay. I wish I had a valid excuse, but in all honesty, I spent all my free time the past two nights playing Celeste. (Not too far in it; first two Chapters cleared with all Strawberries and I did the first two B-Sides because I'm too stubborn to leave an uncleared challenge even if I know I should do all the main game before messing with them.)

Aaaanywho...

Mikakunin Shoujo Shinkoukei: 7.5. It's been a little while since a song has left me so confused. I thought the Google Translate lyrics were absolute gibberish:

Hello Hello Hello Hello
I'm an alien I say for the first time but I'll say it for the first time
Hello Hello Hello Hello Hello
Actually it's a deep-sea fish

But then the background shows her as an alien & a fish, so...not quite as garbled as I initially thought it was...

Putting that aside; it's catchy, there's some odd audio effects (which I like) around 2:37 & again at the outro, I like all the neon lights in the video, but it's far from my favorite song of hers. But it'll also probably be fairly memorable due to how confused it left me. 7.5 might be undervaluing it a bit, but it's something I'd have to spend more time thinking about to get a good grasp on where exactly I'd want to rank it.

Midnight Song: 6.

"Summer time time time yeah

Dance dance dance yeah

Dance dance dance wow wow

Dance dance dance"

...I like her, but this song kinda misses the mark for me.

That last song: 5.5-ish. It's another one where I kinda want an instrumental. When this song started, there was a certain harshness to the music that had me sure this was going to be, by far, the best song of the three... but then the singing started and I just wasn't nearly as into it.

Video is great (I doubt I'll ever tire of seeing virtual characters in real environments), the noise the instruments make around the three minute mark are wonderful, but still just not into the singing.

I think the Google Translate of these lyrics wins the award for "most garbled mess" of the topic.

Empty shampoo filled garbage
Which are? You don't need either?

On the one hand, I know that can't be even remotely close to correct. On the other, I would appreciate the singing a lot more if they truly were to just randomly shout "EMPTY SHAMPOO FILLED GARBAGE!!" which is clearly the best lyric of all time.

I Truly Believe: 7. It's a very nice song in all aspects, but it doesn't really fire up my imagination or spark much of a connection. It starts and ends at "oh, I like this quite a bit"--which is certainly good, obviously, but not super amazing.

Joy to the World: 6-ish. I don't usually like Christmas music or songs this classic, but she has a cute voice & it's my first time hearing it in Japanese which helps take some of the edge off.

Christmas Eve / Happiness: 7-ish. It's nice. I prefer the first part quite a bit--considering the title and that I see two songs for sale with these titles, I'm guessing this is like a sample of two different songs?

Christmas Song: 6; I don't know. Good, but feels like it's missing something.

All I Want For Christmas Is You: 5.2-ish. It's fine? For being a cover of one of the most overplayed songs in history, it's surprisingly not bad.

And you can post as many songs as you want, just know that I may be a bit slow rating them since I'm still a bit obsessed with Celeste. (Standard credits achieved; still need to go back for the Crystal Hearts in 6 & 7, and some Strawberries in 7, and then there's Chapter 7 B-Side, to say nothing of the post game content... not sure how far I'll make it on any of that stuff, but I still need to at least look at some of it.)

https://youtu.be/vHmrllBV9-U

this was from a major new year's eve event called tubeout i only barely heard about before it happened. it was the biggest one held outside of hololive's big countdown stream that lasted like 10 hours and nijisanji's gigantic midnight concert that was a collab with popular actors or something. Sure it got overshadowed by them hard, but it still got like 12k viewers watching this part live

and yet, still nobody cared enough to clip it, so i did it myself

The song is the animare group's first original song, fanfare. it's a prerecorded song, but notably the version used is, as far as I know, original to the event, since it's the first time it's been used since Hinako (one of the other members) left. Actually, it might be the first time it's being used at all since animare's first anniversary streams it was unveiled at, come to think of it. I can't recall seeing them elsewhere prior in any kind of concert. Only (virtual) variety programs, game shows and competitions.

Vogulisi (Party-Rock-Mix): 7 for now, with a note that it'd probably drop some if I were to listen to it several times at a full ranking. It's surprisingly catchy--to a point that I don't even mind the simple & repetitive lyrics.

...For now, anyway. I think listening to it several times in one month would be rather draining, but it makes a good first impression. Also, was that a cow around the 20 second mark?

Snow Song Show: 4. Another song that doesn't really click for me, for unidentified reasons. I'm not too fond of the original either (I do prefer Miku singing it, but it's still only a 5-ish)... I think it's just my bias against Christmas hitting it; with the references to Santa & presents and what not, this feels more Christmas-y than some of the other songs? Maybe?

Hurry Xmas: 0.5.

That last Christmas video: 5-ish; it's funny, but we've had funnier and weirder ones posted than this, so it's just okay.

Christmas videos defeated!

I'll look at the Spotify versions of Emma's songs tomorrow. I'm a bit surprised those links actually work--a lot of the foreign songs I've run into lately seem to be region locked on Spotify, but hers actually do play.

Celeste update: Chapter 7 B-Side cleared, barely. 1,347 deaths and I resorted to looking at a video to see how I was supposed to clear two of the rooms... it was a significant jump in difficulty (my second highest death count was at Chapter 4 B-Side, which "only" took me around 800 deaths), so I'm not too optimistic about making it much further.

Not sure if I want to go pick up Chapter 7's Crystal Heart (I only missed one of the gems to unlock it on my first trip through the stage, so I'm fairly confident that I could get that Heart without too much trouble), hunt Strawberries, or move on to Chapter 8? Will figure it out tomorrow, I guess.

Listened to the full versions of Emma's songs, don't really have much else to say about them; Christmas Eve is still the better of the two. Not super great, but it's just a pleasant and relaxing song, so it's notably above average and somewhere in the 7s.

The other song is...alright, though still not as good. Probably around a 6.

Since her other song, Haze, was available of Spotify I listened to it too. Put it somewhere in the 7s as well; it's also nice.

Not much progress today. Decided to listen to some random VGM to try to find something else I'd want to nominate somewhere--I've had two songs in mind for a while now, but want to find a third I feel really good about nominating... haven't found anything yet though, so I have nothing to show from my efforts tonight.

Not that I need to nominate in sets of 3 or anything, I just feel I want a third song for some reason.

Celeste: Did Chapter 8. Very short and easy chapter after 7's B-Side... it was really easy to find all the Strawberries and get everything. Decided to take a break afterwards; tomorrow, I look at 8's B-Side and predict much suffering as a result.

Eternal Wind Jazz: 3. Sorry, but slowed down piano remixes aren't usually my thing.

Virtual Cat 2020: 5.5. It's nice.

NEW WORLD: 5. I dunno. I like parts of it, but it runs a bit too long and eventually fades in the background... I forget I'm listening to anything at all and space out completely.

Tokyo Girl: 4.8. About the same thing; it's not bad, but it doesn't leave much of an impression.

Unrelated to anything here, but I'd like to take a brief second to listen to Celeste's Chapter 4 B-Side again:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgDYV_IbPuo

Possibly my favorite song on the soundtrack. That chapter was so difficult, but this song was so relaxing that it helped keep things from getting too frustrating.

Chapter 7's B-Side song could learn a lot from this track...

Chandelier (Cover): 4, maybe 4.5-ish. It's fine, but I don't think it's an improvement on the original or changes the song in any interesting ways.

Lazy: 6. I think I like it, but would want to listen to it again at a later date to see how I felt about it then.

Going to take a break here.

Celeste Update: Needed to go collect the last two Crystal Hearts to even start 8's B-Side. Chapter 7's was easy, but I just cheated and looked up where to go & what to do for Chapter 6's... probably shouldn't have, but I wanted access to 8-B and didn't want to repeatedly replay Chapter 6 trying to find a hidden area just to get to where I wanted to be.

darn, i had somewhat higher hopes for that one. I guess it was something to experience in the moment, as it premiered exactly when the new year started. the default youtube live video countdown complemented it too.

Robinson: 6.5. It's nice, I think it would fare better if I had any clue what the lyrics were. The song and image make me feel like there's a good story there, I just don't know what.

: 7. Quite an improvement over the original, wouldn't mind hearing more from him.

Inochi (Cover): Hey, I recognize this song! It's perfectly fine, but I prefer AZKi's version.

Johari window: 8.5; this feels like the type of song that would start at a decent ranking position and keep getting moved up the list as I refused to cut it.

Celeste Update: Chapter 8 B-Side was actually kinda easy? Well, not easy exactly (780-ish deaths), but way easier than 7-B and one specific screen from 4-B that I maintain was harder than anything else in the game thus far.

Onward to Chapter 9... tomorrow.

: Somewhere between 5 and 6. Not one of my favorites, but there's nothing wrong with it & it's better than the original (apparently there are more covers I prefer to the Vocaloid originals than I would have expected) & the attempt at translating the lyrics gave some amusing gibberish:

acid potatoes bitter also you also me another cup of

I think "acid potatoes bitter" is the new record for most badly mistranslated lyric this topic.

Dango Daikazoku: Unranked, at least for now. It's good, but I'm not in the mood for it right now. Also, I wasn't expecting a Clannad song.

Fanfare: It's cute, but somehow it reminded me of Chuchu Darling and then I wanted to hear that again, so I had to go listen to it. Then I had to listen to the English version which you already said wasn't any good, but I hadn't heard it and I wanted more Hibiki Ao in my life, so I listened to it anyway--I'd never call it good, but she tried her best with a language she's not great at, so it's rather cute and charming anyway. Probably ranked Chuchu a few spaces too low in retrospect (though now I can't honestly remember where it wound up on the ranking in the first place. Lower than I'd place it now at any rate.).

And now I'm distracted and kinda forgot what the song I was supposed to be talking about sounded like...

*after going back to listen to it a second time*

Somewhere between 6 and 7.

Almost caught up, but I'll take another break here. It's kinda late already.

Celeste Update; Chapter 9 is mean.
