This one kind of sucks because it tries to turn into the fkn Nutcracker or something at one point and it's eerily reminiscent of how Final Fantasy II had no idea what it was doing nor what it wished to be and I'm all for synchronous themology I mean who isn't right but this is uncanny in a bad way and it starts out OK even but then it doesn't know what it wants to be who it wants to be seriously it tries to be smart and classical but it just sounds like Nobuo Uematsu is snorkeling?

I don't really like this one either because it has one of those annoying JRPG battle theme traits where you can just kind of hear the composer saying "You're going to be doing regular battle stuff for like literally this entire game so I'm going to give you the appropriate feeling that this is a recurring thing typical of your gameplay experience and there isn't really anything going on in this battle theme anyway honestly I've made sure it never really goes anywhere because you're just going to want to end every battle as quickly as possible I mean let's be real so I am going to drone on until you feel bad and finish killing all your enemies and I'm not even an earworm because well actually I lied I am"

Oh look we're Dracula now you can really tell Nobuo Uematsu was running out of ideas by the time of Final Fantasy 1 because he thought that the crux of Final Fantasy was some kind of gothic horror and I'm all for gothic horror when it's appropriate I mean who isn't right but I don't need to feel like I'm swimming in Lake Vampire every time I row my canoe down a river and stumble upon a bunch of cigarette metaphors but in all honesty I kind of dig this ngl it has such a dark vibe to it which reminds us how deep Final Fantasy 1 was.

This one is going to upset many poppets but you know Napoleon never let that stop him on his way to ultimate humiliation at the hands of snow so here I go Final Fantasy VI has the benefit of the pretty SNES chip but otherwise it's just the epic expression of Uematsu at peak "You're gonna hear this one a billion times too so let's make it sound like a chore" it just keeps doing the FF motif without adding anything new to the conversation it kind of reminds me of why I hate Will Farrell?

This one's kind of funny because it's so humorously repetitious but it's done in a way that as I said is somehow funnier than prior repetitive problematic tunes because I heard it so many times whilst running on a treadmill in wintry Idaho whilst also homeless that I developed lyrics for it here goes my magnum opus:

What a surprise my dolls I have eliminated all of NES and SNES from the competition in the bottom half okay so here's the thing with FFIV's it's innovative in that I tap my foot very slightly by the second repetition which is more than I can say for the rest of this lot thus far but whenever I really stop and think about it for a long time? I'm reminded of all the flans and how I'd forget which ones responded to which magical attacks and how some actually responded to physical attacks and honestly it's a whole thing and then I remember how everyone but Tellah comes back to life anyway

In the year 1996 (because the game was released in Japan in early 1997) Nobuo Uematsu decided that the best way to illustrate the planet known as Planet was to make everything sound like steam trains are rolling by and it's the Daily Double and you're standing on a rocket hoping not to fall off a ledge and again it's the Daily Double and Alex Trebek is staring at you menacingly as only Alex Trebek can honestly this song is a trip and it's got kind of an epic quality behind it but at the same time it's not great.

The most important thing to remember about FFIX's battle theme is that the entire setup portion of this song AKA the first twenty-one seconds is in fact spent with the camera swirling around melodramatically to establish the actors of the great play that is a random battle AKA the party members and the party would-be enders AKA the monsters once you get past that and learn to love the boogie there's a great song in here full of splendor and high fantasy and swords and sandals actually that's just Steiner.

How can you not love this it's so different from all that came before it I think it sounds a lot like someone cheering someone else on and the aforementioned someone else is doing amazing things just perfect perfect things there was absolutely nothing wrong with the things it was a perfect phone call anyway there's just such a lovely jazz thing going on here despite a complete lack of jazz and it highlights how different everything feels in Spira and that's powerful and sweeping and captivating and I'm crying.

Realtalk if you can't appreciate the EPIC MARATHON LEGACY nature of this song then I'm sorry I'm just so sorry in the same way that Obi-Wan was so sorry that Padme was carrying Anakin Skywalker's KIDS in her STOMACH this song encapsulates why Yoko Shimomura nailed the battle music for all of FFXV even though she sort of dropped the ball with those kitschy Americana tracks but anyway we're not here to lambast we're here to blast this incredible song full volume and then remember that it's somehow one of the weakest battle songs in the game despite its grandeur

The song tells you not to be afraid but the vividness makes you fear for a world without this song because you get so swept up in the strength of the non-vocal instrumental prowess of Nobuo Uematsu that you begin to wonder if life is but a dream never seen a bluer sky yeah I can really heh anyway this song is from 1999 and Cowboy Bebop is from 1998 and if you really stop and think about it how awesome is that I really love Final Fantasy VIII's battle theme because it feels threatening and if you don't have scary memories of T-Rexaurs when you were a kid then I feel for you the same way that many Board 8 folk feel for me for not growing up with Disney movies GOT EM.

You're allowed to be blinded by the light baby this song is gorgeous instrumental to my good and happy and EPIC dreams it's beautiful it's pretty it's cute and sexy it's the way that the light catches Lightning's face just so when Motomu Toriyama (a freak and bad writer) sees her at the club and calls her "Shorty" which is disgraceful I can't imagine a world without this theme song ever since 2010 when I opened my heart to the violin and let the right one in I need to keep listening to this my favorite regular battle theme in Final Fantasy history "let's mosey" and celebrate the best the best the best the best the best prettiest most bedazzling awesome flavorful yet tender.
