When I was in middle school, my one history teacher had us memorize every country in the world along with their capital cities.

Since then, a large chunk of Eastern Europe, Northeastern Asia, and like half of Africa are completely different. Names change, borders change.

We had to do that with the exception of Sub-Sahara Africa. The reason to quote my teacher: "There's a new nation and capital every year in that place. It will be out of date before long."
