My wording represented my position poorly. When I DM'd, I was really into the mechanics and I felt that it was fun, but I leaned too heavily into it because I was so anxious about my storytelling skills, and when I relaxed on that my group ended up having a lot more fun, myself included. In general, I don't really feel comfortable as a DM, but I kinda had to take on that role in order to get things moving since it was my idea to get people involved.

I've not seen a CE campaign happen, but I've only been lurking a year and posting for 5 months or so.

Obviously one should never completely ignore mechanics, but manipulating them can help in creating immersion, especially with novice players. Stop gatekeeping dude.

I mean it's not like the game is complex or anything. You roll up a level 1 character with a bit of help from an experienced player and learn little by little. It's just dice throws and reading a few pages. The DM is the one who has to actually know the rules.

I mean, I just said that when I tried to play I was the DM and I tried to learn the rules to their full extent, and that didn't actually work with a party of all new players, like we were all new to the format of the game. Like I said, you're gatekeeping in the worst of ways, and that's honestly fine too, I'll look to you as an example of the worst way to represent the fan base, but I definitely want to point out that that's the worst way to represent the game for future players. So keep on keeping on, if you're happy being a fucking meme, but as for me, I wish to bring new people into the fold from both gameplay and roleplaying standpoints.
