My old ass computer finally died on me. Knew it was going to happen as soon as the random resets started happening.

I'm looking for something that can run modern games well. Doesn't have to be the newest and shiniest.

I'm not totally sure what the price range of computers are these days.

Figure out your budget first. Prebuilt can get you some decent stuff for 700ish that can run everything out there (but probably not on ultra for the newest releases)

Building is a different story and if you go that route there should be some good reddit posts soon about all the best deals coming this weekend

my friend actually recently did this exact thing

https://tinyurl.com/qr8yy4j

Surprisingly good at the price, and he runs outer worlds at high lol. It hitches every once in awhile, and can't maintain good fps on ultra, but it does exactly what you're looking for

I have no experience with the brand but he's super happy with it and it seems very well priced with good components.

Like I said, I've watched it run Outer Worlds on high and it runs fine. I can't imagine you can play stuff like RDR2 very well but unless you're trying to play new super intense games on it you'll be golden. Also from what I can tell it's modern enough that if you want to upgrade piece meal it shouldn't be that bad.

edit - also an ssd makes everything run better

but also like I said if you're willing to put in the time (it's only like two hours) to build your own, this weekend is the best time of year

you can find awesome deals and build a computer for the same amount as that prebuild, but getting a computer that's comparable to a 1k+

I can't believe you can get a ryzen 3 for that price. That's an incredible deal.

I was looking into building a computer I think two years ago

It ended up being cheaper to just buy a $1500 cyber power desktop with the same specs/ parts than to build my own

It's holding up very well so far, but obviously a lot comes down to luck of the draw

Edit; I buy a computer on average every seven years, so yes I do go overboard

Same brand but seems a little more powerful.

Mulling over the idea of getting myself or my brother a new computer tonight.

He clearly needs it more working off a 6 year-old laptop but it's kind of a lot to spend on a gift.

https://www.newegg.com/hp-prodesk-405-g4-6vc52ut-aba-business-desktops-workstations/p/N82E16883997233

That's on a black Friday deal $300 off. Not the best desktop due to form factor, but for the price it'd get a lot done.

Is your current one better than his? If so buy yourself one and give him your old one.

Hi I'm gonna jump in here too and say that I too am looking into either getting a new computer or upgrading the one I have. Except I don't know a lot of stuff so I'm looking for advice.

The computer I have is fairly old but ran fine up until the graphics card seems to have broken (that'd be the main thing I want to upgrade anyway). I don't plan on playing a lot of extreme ridiculous high definition games, I mostly just play indie games with simple stylized graphics, but I do want to play Obduction & No Man's Sky, which didn't work on my old graphics card. Also I plan on doing plenty of video editing. But that's about it in terms of what would probably push things I guess. Dunno how to measure for that.

Computer specs are that it's Windows 7 64-bit, 8GB of RAM, and Intel Core i7 CPU K 875 @ 2.93GHz. I think that's what's important? Part of the reason I want to keep it is Windows 10 sort of rubs me the wrong way, but also price is a pretty big thing too where I don't know costs it might be cost effective just to get a new one altogether I dunno whoops. Advice is appreciated thanks

For security reasons you don't really want to stay with 7. If you get a new rig it will come with 10 for less than just buying it. Also Ryzen gen 2 is better than any chipset Intel will have in the next year or more, and their chipsets inspite of being faster are also cheaper. An upgrade could stave off buying an entire new system for awhile, but a new Ryzen will extend that time period even more.

Thoughts on this? shorturl.at/cAM34

$899
3.6 x 6 core (Ryzen 5)
16 gb ram
500 gb ssd (no hdd, would prob buy one)
GeForce RTX 2070

I buy computers very infrequently, and then just sit on the machine I have for usually 5+ years. Seldom, if ever, upgrade unless I have a very specific need. Old computer still works, but I feel like it's starting to get bogged down with crap and the specs on it play most indie games just fine but I'm starting to hit that point where I'm defaulting to lowest settings on anything remotely intensive. So I guess I could reformat the HD and then just buy consider a graphics card. Here's my current computer:

3.2 x 4 (i5)
8 gb ram
2 tb hdd
GeForce GTS 450

...y'know, looking at the specs on paper, my old computer actually still looks pretty okay. But it's definitely not new. What am I missing? I dunno exactly how old it is, but my BIOS date is 11/5/2010.

Also, any suggestions for monitors? I got bit by the idea of having one of those stupid-wide monitors the first time I saw one, and my current desk is definitely big enough to support one. (Or multiple regular monitors.)

I've usually gotten by on fairly small screens. My current is 23". So anything would be a huge step up.

Ended up buying this one while half-asleep tonight. Will I regret it?

I've never tried their wide/curved screens, but BenQ has never done wrong by me. They are really good monitor manufacturers.

It's a fair price on one of the best chipsets on the market. I don't know the manufacturer, but I doubt you'll regret it.

so I guess I probably missed all the best black friday deals from dealing with way too much in my life, are there still any good deals on a new desktop out there? I still barely know where or what to look for.

For what it's worth I guess my budget is about $500, I really don't think I need something that powerful graphic-wise since aside from a handful of games I want to play like Obduction or No Man's Sky, most games I'd play on it are either retro stuff or really simple indie games, but I would also want to use it for complex video editing if that matters at all. Additionally I do have a new-ish 2TB external hard drive that I can use for it so space might not need to be a big concern.
