I noticed a wet spot when I got home from work, and the ceiling was sagging a little bit above it. It was near my pc and desk set up so I moved that all a few yards over. I called my landlord and sent him pictures, he said there'd be someone over tomorrow.

A few minutes ago I woke up to a tearing sound followed by a loud thump. Sure enough, there's about a 2' x 3' section of drywall missing and it's all over the room.

So, umm. AMA? Anyone have any advice? Anyone have experience with water damage?

I had a leak in my room's ceiling twice (though no ceiling fell). Luckily the landlord was responsive and dealt with it.

The top priority is of course stopping the source of the water. After you do that and it drains (which I assume will be fast with a huge hole in the ceiling) everything needs to be dried out before the ceiling can go back up. My landlord had large fans and a dehumidifier running in my room for like a week to do this.

I'm kinda surprised the landlord is pushing it off until tomorrow since it could get much worse if the source of the leak isn't stopped...

Oh I guess from your post maybe there isn't an active leak? If it's a long time thing I guess maybe you'll have additional issues like mold; I don't know if that'd be a major health concern, but maybe if it looks bad sleep in another room until it's checked out?

There didn't seem to be a lot of water when the ceiling fell, I think it had spent most of the day slowly leaking. But it could also be mold... I'm not sure. It smelled awful but that could just be the damp drywall.

Is there any pipe up there? Or is it water from rain?

I didn't see any pipe when I looked up after the drywall fell down, just some crappy looking little wooden planks. Not impossible, though, that's a good idea.

Is there another floor above you? Sprinklers?

I'm the top floor of this old house that's been converted into 3 apartments. There are two sprinklers, but neither are anywhere close to where this happened.

A roofing guy is coming out tomorrow to both check on the roof and my ceiling. It's not gotten that much worse over the last 32 hours (since it collapsed), but small pieces of drywall around the edge of the hole have been falling down.

Fingers crossed we don't get any more rain today!

if you rent, your landlord should be taking care of this

make sure you get proof of a mold inspection

Right. It's their property, I'd have thought they'd be a little quicker on things. I've already confirmed with my insurance agent that my renter's insurance will cover what I need it to.

Also, it's snowing a lot today so my wish of no rain came true. Damn you, Pittsburgh genie.
