What genre

It seems most "fandoms" can fall into these three categories.

idk, all 3 can overlap. In general, probably superhero > fantasy > scifi, but part of that might just come down to the availability of shows and films featuring superheroes vs fantasy.

I like a mix of scifi and fantasy elements, especially post-apocalyptic: neo medieval to neo pre-modern settings.
Think games like FFVI, SMT IV, Xenogears, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
XC2 is actually my least favorite of the Xenoblades. XCX is my favorite, and XC1 is a close second, but neither match that setting, they're great for other reasons.

I hate medieval fantasy settings. They tend to be really corny with all their magical elves and stupid names. It's hella soy. No thanks.

The other two are fine though.

Sci-fi is REALLY hit and miss.

Fantasy is generally my preference. Basically all the novels I read are fantasy, I don't recall having ever read a sci-fi novel.

Sci-Fi is easily my least favorite - while I've always liked Isaac Asimov, I tend to not really get into sci-fi unless it's hardcore time travel stuff or really Science Fantasy in disguise (which really isn't sci-fi no matter what pop culture in general thinks).

The other two are harder to choose from - I do like comic book/superhero stories (and I've been a hardcore comic geek for like 35 years), but that can be really touch-and-go. I've disliked most of what Marvel and DC have been doing for the last decade or so in the actual comics, and there really isn't much by third-party publishers that appeals to me at all right now (though I loved Valiant in the past, before it went to shit). And I've never really strayed too far from the superhero genre - lots of people love comics that push the envelope, or deal with radically different genres, or which are deconstructionist narratives about why comics suck, but that's never appealed to me all that much.

But with fantasy, there's a LOT of terrible genre trash out there. For every 1 good fantasy novel there's about 999 bad ones. Which can make it harder to really get into new stuff. Fantasy movies tend to be a safer bet, but there's still a fair number of terrible ones there as well.

I have noticed that I've mostly stopped reading comics entirely, and I read far fewer fantasy novels than I used to. Aside from the occasional re-reading of stuff I read years ago, I'm mostly reading academic historical stuff now (like right now, I just finished reading about the old Persian Empire, and I've started reading something on the Peloponnesian War). Most of my comic/fantasy interest at this point is more based on stuff from years/decades ago than anything new. Or stuff like the Marvel movies.

I suppose if I had to pick one, I'd probably have to pick fantasy, just because I DO still tend to favor that as a setting in RPGs.

Huh. From your frequent criticisms of less-than-pure-scifi, I had expected it to be your favorite.

Sci Fi can be good but it's hard to nail.

Fantasy is great most of the time due to the creativity it allows.

I don't care one bit for superheroes unless it's Batman.

Hmmm fantasy I guess? I dont consume a lot of fiction that isnt cartoons or tv podcasts (Nightvale, Adventure Zone). Those are fantasy, I think. Not sci fi or hero, for sure.

Probably sci fi, I do like fantasy for games most but man most other mediums of fantasy do I find dull or way too cheesy, and not a good cheesy like a 80s action film.

I'm usually coming from the opposite direction if I'm complaining about the degree to which something is or isn't sci-fi. I just want people to keep their filthy sci-fi out of my Science Fantasy or Westerns IN SPACE.

Too many people today assume the trappings of sci-fi in a setting make something sci-fi, but there's more to the genre than that. Star Wars has more in common with LotR than it does Star Trek, for instance.

depends on medium.

video games, fantasy by far. it's easy to get attached and familiar. swords and sorcery is an infallible combo.

books and visual/audio (ala movies, anime), then sci-fi or eastern superheroes. sci-fi is more relatable to our real lives or possible distant future outlooks. eastern superheroes have breadth and depth in terms of plot, characters, suspense, theme, topicality.

western superheroes are just really lame and corny.
