As yall know I don't know anything about Technology

so my computer sometimes just freezes. The mouse cursor doesn't move and even the time freezes. I even left it on overnight after it froze just to see if it would pop back but nope.

The thing is, it does this when I play overwatch. ib "lol your computer is trying to save you" or whatever

though I will say, I haven't tested this with anything else. I haven't tried running something from steam.

I tried setting my graphics in overwatch to low, but it still happens. I thought maybe its just overheating, so I dusted the fuck out of my computer, even opened it up and the sprayed the hell out of it, it still does it. I tried running overwatch without anything else running, it still does it

all of my computer friends are just saying "reset it". I'm like come on, is that the only thing you can think of? Some master race. I don't want to go through the trouble of doing that, especially since it doesn't freeze when I have the browser up

so I dunno, anybody have any ideas?

Search dxdiag on your computer

Click "Save All Information"

Open the txt file

Then copy and paste

Processor and Memory under System Information
And scroll down and under Display Device, copy and paste: Chip Type and Display Memory

I don't think we should need any more than that.

if so hitting start and typing dxdiag as suggested above should yield a command you can run

Based on that I think I'd definitely want to try and figure out if it's just Overwatch that does it or if it happens with other games/applications.

Best case scenario something with Overwatch and your computer don't agree. I suppose in the meantime you could check to make sure your drivers are to date, etc. (IIRC Windows 10 has something that can check them for you, if you're running something else it may be different)

There is no version of windows you could have where searching your pc for dxdiag would come up with no results unless directx was somehow removed, and you can't do that by accident. You also can't install Overwatch without DirectX being/getting installed. The only type of error that I can come up with that explains the situation is PEBCAK.

If search is really coming up with nothing check C:\Windows\System32 for dxdiag

Overwatch is only available for Windows and consoles. To get it to run in MacOS or Linux he'd have to know how to dual boot, set up a virtual machine or use WINE. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if he doesn't know what OS he has he's not doing any of those things.

https://www.hwinfo.com/download/

download the one in the first column, install, run.
a lot of things will show up that you won't recognize. the important one for temperature purposes are sections 3 and 4 down.

get the numbers for CPU 0 in the third section and CPU in the fourth. specifically, the ones in the third column, Maximum. jot that down.
open Overwatch, put it in Windowed mode. make sure you can see those numbers.
keep playing until it freezes.
recheck the numbers, same column (Maximum). jot that down.

if Overwatch is causing a heat issue that'll be the easiest way to check since we'll know how much it's pushing your system.

but honestly this is probably just going to be a hardware issue

so I guess before going any further, you have a friend or someone you work with that is capable of replacing parts? I kind of fear you going into your PC and messing with components if you don't even know what your OS is.

What's your GPU? Give us the display page too.

It could be an overheat issue, but it could also be a memory leak or registry error.

Does it only happen during Overwatch?

Honestly, my first thought is a graphics card driver issue, especially if it happens when gaming.

https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

From the top of the list of dropdowns on that page, choose "GeForce", "GeForce 900 Series", "GeForce GTX 960", "Windows 10 64-bit", "Game Ready Driver (GRD)" and "English (US)", hit Seach, and go from there

Your GPU is a GTX 960, which is a pretty old card at this point.

Yeah, in plain words, it means something could be slowly taking up memory without releasing it, which results in your computer eventually running out.

The easiest way for us to test that with your skill level (no offense), is to do this:

Run Overwatch and then open your task manager and leave it up on your screen on the Process tab. Wait for it to freeze and then see if a process is maxing out your memory.

go to nvidia.com, download geforce experience, run and install it and let it download the drivers for you.

I mean you are probably going to have to reset it if the driver/windows update didn't fix the problem. It really isn't worth all the time to figure out what exactly is the problem if it isn't a update or heat issue so a fresh install should fix the problem unless it is hardware related. Just save the files you want to keep on a backup drive or USB stick, fresh install windows deleting everything and re download stuff.

I'm not 100% sure this will work for you since I'm using a laptop to check this to work out the steps that doesn't have Nvidia but if you want an alternate way to try to update your graphics driver:

  • Click on the Windows Icon
  • Click on Settings
  • Type "Device Manager" in the search box and go to it
  • This'll give you a big list of stuff, go to "Display adapters" and click on the arrow next to it to expand it if it's not already
  • Hopefully under the expanded version it includes "Nvidia GeForce" or something like that. Right click it and hopefully there's an "Update Driver" option and go for it

Small tangent but this is actually a very important update that everyone (not just puns!) should get on. Windows 10 was just revealed to have a critical RSA/Certificate flaw that yesterday's Windows 10 update fixes.

@Punnyz

If you want to update your GPU drivers and keep them up to date and get notifications when updates come out then go here and hit the green download button to download GeForce Experience.

https://www.geforce.com/drivers

After it downloads, install it and then just follow the onscreen prompts and it will automatically get the correct most up to date driver for your GPU then you just click the express installation option and poof. Done. When there is a new updated driver the program will let you know and you can choose to install the update or not.

If you have any issues just let me know. Should be fairly straight forward.
