Gotta be honest, I'm actually surprised by how well the Smash fanbase is taking this. I thought the overall reaction was gonna be much more vitriolic. Instead, the dissenters have mostly been relatively calm (from what I've seen anyway) and a lot of people have defended Byleth's inclusion.

The reactions to Isabelle and Incineroar seemed a lot harsher tbh.

Corrin was/is legitimately a bad inclusion, as is Chrom. Lucina is fine as an echo of Marth.

Robin is... ehhh, it makes sense and the moveset is fine.

Byleth may be getting roasted and memed on, but you've gotta remember how high tensions were before the base game launched. Incineroar in particular got a ton of flak for multiple reasons:

-He was confirmed to be the final new fighter in the base roster, which was anticlimactic to some;
-He struck quite a few people as a "shill pick";
-Pokemon Sun/Moon have received significant backlash in their own right; and above all else...
-He buried the Grinch leak.

(I don't necessarily agree with these lines of reasoning, but they were common.)

Everybody was going at each others' throats after the Kencineroar trailer, it was wild. This feels tame to me by comparison. But that's just from my experience, and everyone's mileage is gonna vary depending on which circles they interact(ed) with.

If anything, it feels like the pro-Byleth folks are more vocal/"on the offensive". If you go to the Smash Ultimate board here, there's a fuckin' Gregorian Chant of "Hoes mad" in seemingly every Byleth thread.

@KamikazePotato That's definitely disrespectful to Zach and embarrassing to see. At the same time, I feel like this case is more of a Twitter problem than a "people who don't want Byleth" problem. Twitter is a damn cesspool and people will go for the jugular over anything on there, no matter how benign or even positive. Its culture is rotten to the core.

Like you said, it's not an isolated case and I'm sure some people have acted the fool about Byleth across other platforms. They deserve flak. I guess what's frustrating is, it feels like the defenders are so torqued up about people like those Twitter goons that they're spewing HOES MAD and countless insults everywhere... even places where people aren't actually acting out-of-pocket. So as someone who just wants to reasonably discuss the damn game and its announcement, it feels like it's harder to avoid the vitriol/general negativity from the defenders than the "hoes".

But, that's the Internet for ya. And the Smash fanbase is uniquely messy, so I can see how emotions run high.

Honestly speaking, and this is from someone who would have preferred many characters over Byleth, I don't think this is at all true outside of the actual Fire Emblem subreddit. People shot off HOES MAD pretty quickly but that's because the complaints were already starting like 30 seconds into the Direct.

Doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things though, I just have a morbid fascination with the Smash fanbase and they'll get over it once Shiny DLC Character #6 gets released.

My pick for the 5th DLC slot since they annonced more DLC fighters was: Someone from Three Houses, or a pokemon from Sword/Shield. Nintendo needs to have that DLC fighter to shill. Three Houses makes more sense because it has DLC to sell. You bet one of the 6 remaining DLC fighters is going to be someone from Pokemon Sword/Shield. The rest might as well be up in the air at this point.

Nah, they probably want the Pokemon fighter to coincide with one of the the DLC releases. I expect two characters to be at E3 like almost always, so either the SwSh mon will be there to coincide with Isle of Armor or it'll be later this year to coincide with Crown Tundra
