Does it seem like guys never listen to female artists?

At my job we can hookup to a nice bluetooth speaker and listen to everyone music but unless on the rare occasion its a dance/electronica song then we never listen to serious female vocalists.

I have a pretty even mix, but not because I am doing the sjw thing of making things equal artificially but because I legitimately love a good mix.

i listen to metal, and to be honest there isnt a whole lot of female talent on the scene (i mean actual talent. sex appeal is not a talent)

that being said, nervosa is actually one of my alltime favorite bands and i listen to them often.

but i do see your point. i wouldnt say never but certainly not very often

The way it is phrased is tough. In my experience, guys are actually more open-minded about female musicians than the other way around.

When I was a DJ, one station I worked for had special promotions and events for female musicians/bands. It was my male boss's idea.

When I was listening to rap, I got to hear a variety of rap artists, including many female artists from my friends. They didn't care who it was as long as it was good.

Country has has some great lady stars throughout its history. And many guys aren't ashamed to say they're Dolly or Reba fans.

Females are usually the ones demanding the air play or refusing to listen to guys. Because guys are...sexist

I think a lot of it is lack of female representation in many genres,in hip hop at least at one time the lack of female representation was mostly because people wouldnt listen to them anyways but recently artists like cardi b, megan, and noname have had great success so I think things are changing

Maybe the different culture is a factor, but as far as the Japanese music I listen to, I'd say at least 70 percent of the artists are female. And that's multiple genres; rock/alt rock, pop, R&B, etc.

I actually had to make a point to try more male artists.

I've never done a scientific study of my listening habits, I'd be willing to bet that I listen to more female singers than male ones in general.

I definitely tend to sing female performers' songs a lot more in karaoke, though. All my perfect scores in Karaoke Revolution were for like Michelle Branch and Britney Spears. And the last CD I was listening to was Sara Bareilles.

It probably depends on genre, though. Some genres have more or vastly less female performers than others. Your ratio is going to be a lot different if you mostly listen to Bubblegum Pop than it is going to be if you mainly listen to Death Metal.

Looking at my collection, it does seem to skew definitely male, but it's not deliberate, about 70% of all musicians are male, so if you have albums from 100 artists, odds are only 30 will be by women.

i think it really depends on the genre, for stuff like pop and more indie-oriented stuff i tend to skew female. like slinja said there's a lot of big female names in rap right now too

but like, metal doesn't have a whole lot of women in the first place

One of my problems with female artists is that the music industry seems to skew female music representation towards genres/styles I don't care much for. This isn't always the case though, of course.

Also, I like it when singers have... unusual? voices, and a lot of female singers are kinda... samey. I like Alanis Morissette, and Stevie Nicks, and Eartha Kitt, etc...

Many female artists have music that just isn't what I'm interested in.

I'll just point a finger to Paramore, I first learned of the band via their song "Misery Business" the rest of their music was not like Misery Business. They have some good songs, I won't argue that, but aside from that one I'm not really going to put them on any playlist.
