https://www.businessinsider.com/authoritarianism-experts-say-time-running-out-americans-to-stop-trump-2020-2

If Americans are concerned that President Donald Trump and Republicans are moving the US toward becoming a one-party, authoritarian state, they are running out of time to stop them, experts warned.

Trump has exhibited autocratic impulses since his 2016 campaign and from the moment he entered the White House.
The president has attacked virtually every democratic institution in the US when he's felt its actions were unfavorable to his agenda or public appearance. Meanwhile, he pushed traditional US allies away while openly embracing many of the world's most repressive leaders.

These trends have raised concern among top experts on authoritarianism, fascism, and democracy, but they've often said that the robust political system in the US, with its checks and balances and constitutional norms, has prevented Trump from becoming a full-blown authoritarian and doing whatever he wants.

Since Trump was acquitted in the Senate earlier this month after being impeached in the House over his dealings with Ukraine, there's been a White House purge of impeachment witnesses, and Attorney General William Barr has intervened in the trial of a close associate of the president, Roger Stone. And the experts' tone has changed dramatically.

'Someone has got to push back'

"The system is enabling Trump," Jason Stanley, a Yale philosophy professor who wrote "How Fascism Works," told Insider.

"There need to be mass protests," he said. "The Republican Party is betraying democracy, and these are historical times. Someone has got to push back.

So, why aren't you protesting?

Not just mass protests but prolonged protests. One weekend isn't gonna make any difference, and I'm afraid most of us are either busy working or with our heads too far up our asses to dedicate the time and attention to fighting our slow destruction.

Outrage fatigue/normalization, I think.

Trump should've been a no-go when he wouldn't release his taxes. That he got elected was an embarrassment. From day 1 he lied about the size of his inauguration and just hasn't stopped.

Now he survived an impeachment votes across party lines and is acting with impunity. He probably should be impeached again, but first Barr needs to be impeached.

Basically, the line was passed a long time ago.

The American people don't care about the hoity-toity opinions of these self-proclaimed "experts." We care about results, which is exactly what President Trump has been delivering for us.

These people critize Trump for "attacking our institutions," but they were silent when Obama used the IRS as a weapon to attack his political opponents. They also had nothing to say about Obama turning the Justice Department into his personal slush fund and funneling billions of dollars into left-wing special interest groups. I wonder why.

If that were true, what good would protests do? When is the last time a mass protest in an authoritarian regime actually changed things? Usually it just results in people getting shot.

Wasn't he caught on a hot mic promising a Russian aid that he would act more favorably to Russian interests if they didn't act so provocatively during the election cycle? I'm not sure if that qualifies as treason technically, but that is certainly more evidence of impropriety than has ever been produced against Trump, hence why he has gotten away with so many things despite persisting investigations.

Nah see y'all keep crying wolf on trump when he is neither better or worse than previous presidents. It's business as usual. He's certainly not breaking the law anymore than another president. And if you say he is you really expose yourself for not paying attention to politics pre 2016. There's been enough mass protests and it's making the left look like babies. Beat Donald Trump on logical smart policies. Not hard stances where you leave out some of your own voting base for being so radical.

2016 to 2020 is most babies first time in politics, Bush and Cheney were wildin. Of course they cant catch Trump on hard corruption accusations because theyre all like that and most politicians would get screwed if the precedent was set, but someone will come in screeching orange man bad. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-libertarianism
Although libertarianism in the United States has become associated to classical liberalism and minarchism, with right-libertarianism being more known than left-libertarianism,[5] political usage of the term until then was associated exclusively with anti-capitalism, libertarian socialism and social anarchism and in most parts of the world such an association still predominates.
...
Traditionally, libertarian was a term coined by the French libertarian communist[10] and Le Libertaire editor Joseph Djacque[28][29][30][31][32] to mean a form of left-wing politics that has been frequently used to refer to anarchism[33][30][34][35] and libertarian socialism[36] since the mid- to late 19th century.[37][38] Sbastien Faure, another French libertarian communist, began publishing a new Le Libertaire in the mid-1890s while France's Third Republic enacted the so-called villainous laws (lois sclrates) which banned anarchist publications in France.

As a term, left-libertarianism has been used to refer to a variety of different political economic philosophies emphasizing individual liberty. With the modern development of right-libertarian co-opting[27][33][34][39] the term libertarian in the mid-20th century to instead advocate laissez-faire capitalism and strong private property rights such as in land, infrastructure and natural resources,[40] left-libertarianism has been used more often as to differentiate between the two forms,[11][13] especially in relation to property rights.[41]

While right-libertarianism refers to laissez-faire capitalism such as Murray Rothbard's anarcho-capitalism and Robert Nozick's minarchism,[2][4][27] socialist libertarianism "view[s] any concentration of power into the hands of a few (whether politically or economically) as antithetical to freedom and thus advocate for the simultaneous abolition of both government and capitalism".

that's not what left libertarianism is, it has nothing to do with American-style libertarianism. it dates back to European anarchists back in the mid 19th century
