Did Sony give those to us or did they happen to luck out and get some really good developers on their side? I think the latter.

I agree on the VR side. It didnt take off like Sony wanted it to but you cant deny that they are the only ones to support it on their console.

The "free" games though Microsoft started that with Xbox Live. Plus you get 4 free games a month with Xbox compared to the 2 free games with Playstation.

Innovation is overrated in regards to the success of a company or a product. Execution > innovation and Sony's success and consistency since the PS1 speaks to that.

Vita was OD. If it weren't for it's BS launch price and proprietary memory cards, it would have been the perfect handheld considering it had cross-buy, cross-play, and remote-play.

Honestly Microsoft's redemption arc this gen has been quite good, enough to convince me to make an Xbox One my primary console.

The silence on the PS5 shouldn't inspire confidence in anyone, especially if the rumors are true and they're reacting to whatever price Microsoft makes in an effort to lowball them.

I agree with this post in many ways.

Theyre also probably not only waiting to jump at whatever MS announces in terms of price but also features. Sony are fucking snakes in the grass this way. They sit back and wait for other companies to come up with shit, they hit ctrl+c and ctrl+v and call it a day

Hell they even hit ctrl+c and ctrl+v with the PS5 logo lol

Of course, expect people to just chalk it up to BUSINESS

PlayStation has a billion dead IPs while Microsoft is actively creating new ones and Nintendo is releasing hit games with their existing ones. I don't want to say that the PS5 is gonna be a repeat of the PS3 because its too early to tell, but BOY does it feel like its setting up to be.

I really don't know what you think Microsoft and Sony are doing so differently. They both have a couple of IP they rely on and they both try the odd new one until they find a hit. If anything Sony have been significantly more successful than Microsoft than this as of late considering they've added The Last of Us, Horizon, Spider-man and Dreams to the repertoire. Microsoft haven't had a hit new IP for over a decade.

Sony literally haven't said anything about the PS5 other than some spec details, a logo and that they're waiting on the competition before announcing price. Like do you think Microsoft doesn't care what Sony prices the PS5?

Sony basically succeeded by going "Yo we're not greedy dicks like Nintendo and we're not incompetent like Sega"

Then the developers went to them in droves heh.

Sony ended up creating the Xbox by accident by the way they were hyping up the PS2 as well. Bill Gates was convinced that they were trying to make a Windows for the living room through PlayStation.

Simple, Sony doesn't need to.
Microsoft is doing this "oh look how BC we are, how consumer friendly!" shtick to recover from the anti-consumer shit they wanted to start this gen with. It's great that they're doing it, but innovation was never the goal.
Nintendo always tries new things, but they too had to recover from what was probably the dumbest gaming device they made since the Virtual Boy.

As long as Sony doesn't fall flat on their face once, they'll just keep on trucking doing the same

Microsoft has had some pretty big innovations every gen.

Xbox had custom soundtracks, built-in hard drive and a console online gameplay that wasn't shit with universal gamer tags and matchmaking.

360 had achievements, digital stores, the ability to install discs onto the hard drive to help loading times and the ability to update the entire OS of a console.

Xbox One had Play Anywhere, Enhanced BC patches and Game Pass.

Some things are controversial but you can't deny their impact.

PlayStation isn't a slouch either though. PS1 and PS2 basically started the multimedia console trend. Sony even attempted to do that with the PSP. They really changed the viewpoint that video game consoles were for kids.

PS3 also had crossbuy with handhelds and started the whole Games with PS+ thing.

Honestly all three are pretty damn influential.

@Darmik

I certainly agree on all of that. I wasn't really referring to their contributions as a whole, but rather how they've all reacted to what happened at the start of this gen.
Microsoft's awful announcement of the One X, the WiiU's failure and Nintendo swiftly sweeping it under the rug made sure Sony just had to sit back and laugh their way to the bank.

Despite still having zero interest in a Microsoft console, I think it's great what they're doing. Forces Sony to get off their asses and get back into the fight. The future of console gaming looked bleak at the start of this gen and I was sure I was done with consoles altogether. Now I find myself eager to see what's next.

Thats not what happened at all.

Nintendo partnered with Sony, but they back out at the last minute and teamed up with Philips to make the CD-I. Sony was already far into development thats why the Nintendo PlayStation exists. So they took what they had developed and dropped the PS1.

Sony didnt steal anything, Nintendo betrayed them.
