I started leaving dry cat food and water out four days ago, along with a camera to make sure cats eat it and not some other animals (e.g., if I see a raccoon go for it, I'll stop doing this).
So far, there are two cats coming by to eat some food. The time frame for these cats to visit seem all over the map (one comes regularly at around 3am-ish); so this suggest that they are actually wild cats, and not indoor/outdoor pet cats. Surprisingly, no other animal came by so far. What I am hoping for is that these wild cats will "hang around" at my property, and lead to the following pros: *There will be less birds around my property. Which means hopefully, there will be less woodpeckers, because fuck them (they literally make holes in my house). *There will be less mice around my property. While I do have indoor cats, they are declawed and they can't do shit with mice. So having outdoor wild cats, I hope they will take care of any mice before any mice decides to come inside (which hasn't happened yet). The only cons I can see: *May lead to an unsustainable amount of cats. I am okay with a few cats, but if I start seeing more than like 5 different cats, that's pretty bad... that may lead to territorial disputes, lots of poop/pee, etc. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

Other animals, like raccoons and dogs, might eat it, too. Maybe your anti-woodpecker initiative'll work out, though.

Nothing wrong with providing some food for neighborhood strays, although they are unlikely to take care of rodents on your property. Outdoor cats, especially males, tend to have huge patrol areas so they probably won't linger around your house too long.

It's only bad if you don't want to be mauled by feral cats while leaving your home.
