Honestly don't care how people feel about Undertale, Octopath just sucks.

This match reminded me of how many hours I wasted on that game.

On a slightly related note, Sea of Stars looks like it could actually be a good retro-style RPG?

It's a little weird how many failed attempts there have been trying to recapture that SNES/PS magic

Sea of Stars is how I would have liked Octopath to look. I backed for a physical copy of it already.

Yeah, I'm strongly considering backing it

I liked The Messenger well-enough that I have some confidence in the developer

It's got a really bland set of characters, bad voice acting, tedious combat (I've never played Bravely Default, but from what I read the combat is a super-stripped down version of that, which makes it a lot less interesting).

The storylines are set up such that they each have four acts, but because they're constrained to the four act template, they play out in a very boring and uninteresting way.

The characters don't even interact during the main story beats, so every cutscene acts as though it's just the relevant character present, regardless of your party. The only time characters interact is during scripts, and there's never really a reason given for why they're even travelling together.

Also the final boss is gated behind a pseudo-boss rush (which is not hard but time consuming) and takes like two hours with no saves. Plus the final boss has certain attacks that if you don't know they're coming can wipe you from max health.

I made a long post defending Octopath a while back that I was really proud of. People made fun of me for it. But I do like the way the story lets you fill in gaps. It was my personal game of the year when it came out. All of the things TC lists as criticisms about the story I actually liked and appreciated.

It's not better than Undertale though.

I actually just got The Messenger a week or so ago. Special Reserve Games was having a final sale on Physical copies of it and it took a little less than a week to get here. Haven't gotten to play it yet though but I'm looking forward to it.

Octopath does some really nice backgrounds but the characters and a lot of the environment looks so....uh...minecrafty? I mean, it's not that I think that's bad per se, but it looks more primitive than the feeling I get from Sea of Stars which actually feels like an SNES/PS1 style game.

The combat system seems better for one, with the lack of random encounters and timed hits.

The world map seems like it will be more interesting, just based on what little has been shown. Octopath only really had towns and combat areas, and the towns were arranged in a really boring/predictable pattern to service its boring/predictable four-act structure. Sea of Stars isn't constrained by that and looks like it will have actual puzzles and more interaction with the environment.

The vibe of the game also captures the feel of a 90s RPG better too-- and the developer already has succeeded in creating a game inspired by retro games.

The Messenger wasn't my favorite game ever, but it was solid enough that it gives me a lot of confidence in them.

I think I just convinced myself to back this.

I honestly wish they could have kept going with more stretch goals, especially since they were getting a lot of money, but I understand why they didn't.
