Well for me personally, as I mentioned somewhere in this topic I think, I haven't played either game but from seeing other people play them Octopath looks more to my liking than Undertale.

I'm not disagreeing that it's alienating, I'm just saying it's hilariously weak to avoid a really good game because of it.

I often forget that lots of people play games because of the social aspect more than the quality of the experience itself, and so the fandom IS the game to them. It makes sense in that case, but it's still pretty sad.

Fam there are thousands if not millions of games I could play. My backlog will never be cleared. And most of those games are probably more enjoyable than Undertale.

I feel like Undertale has every right to lose after winning the title of Best Game Ever, but it's kind of dumb to dismiss the game just because some people from elsewhere raided us, especially when it was a well-liked game by people from here beforehand.

It is not a good reason to not play a game.

People have forgotten but the Dark Souls (Or Demon's Souls for fellow OGs) fanbase was pretty wretched. The "git gud"" joke was not a joke or used ironically, people hated us. And now, no matter what your personal game of the decade is, you'd be a fool to argue that Dark Souls is not a top contender for Game of the Decade. Even more of a fool if you anti-voted it for not having "gitten gud".

I think I'd argue that it is a good reason for games such as League of Legends where most of the time you're forced to play with other players, and if the fanbase is vastly toxic then that will kill a lot of the enjoyment.
