Both. I have a guaranteed salary, but I'm paid hourly. Can't get paid for less than 40hr/wk but I get paid for anything I work over that.

Technically hourly, but I am required to put in 40 hrs a week (no more, no less) between work and PTO. Anything I put in under 40 automatically is PTO.

I used to be salary, and while it was nice to just cut out early if I had nothing to do, it was also an excuse for me to carry a pager without needing to get payed for it, so I'll stick with being hourly.

Hourly but I am hoping to ask to be changed to salary. Our office is officially opened 6 AM - 3:30 PM. We are only paid for those hours even if we stay late unless approved for overtime. As an engineer, I regularly stay to 5 - 6 PM to work on projects but if I arrive late at 6:30 AM for example I am paid only for 6:30 AM to 3:30 PM even if I stay to 5 PM.

Both, I guess. I technically get a salary, but I still have an hourly time card, I guess. Which is different that salary when I was active. But also different then hourly anywhere else Ive worked. So both, but more salary, I guess...

It's a weird arrangement I have. I'm salaried, but I still get paid overtime in a weird way. I only get overtime if I work late on billable hours, and overtime can either be paid out at the normal 1.5x rate, or I can take it off at a 1:1 ratio. Generally I just keep two weeks of bank time in case I need it and get the rest paid out.

It is entirely my fault I arrive late and I have no obligation to stay late but given our line of work might need more than 40 hours per week sometimes, I woulda hope management would make exception for all engineers.

Pretty sure the other engineers are paid salary as I am kinda the oddball one. I was drafting before and normally would leave at 3:30 PM. When I started doing engineering was when I started to stay late. Maybe it is an oversight that I was not changed to hourly which is why I hope to ask to be changed to salary.

I'm kind of a combination of hourly and salaried. I work in the healthcare system as a Public Health Education Specialist, so our payroll system lobs me, our therapists, and our RNs under a "Pay Per Visit" scale. The way our visits get weighted ends up amounting to a certain set of hours, and they must equal at least 40 hours/week. If our visits/charting/whatever weights amount to anything under 39 hours, PLT/PTO must be used. We also are not eligible for overtime, but they will occasionally give us bonus pay for on-call visits, volunteer services, or other random acts that they deem "above and beyond" position expectations. So... kind of overtime, but not?

Honestly, I wish they'd just classify all of us as salaried like my previous clinic did and call it a day. It took me forever to understand our payroll system.

I find it interesting how this varies so much within the engineering field. Some of my engineering friends work just 40ish hours a week while some are pulling 60+ hours a week. I would imagine it depends on the line of work and urgency of meeting the deadlines.

Yeah, even at my company I think it somewhat depends on that team but generally my manager has my back and it's not like I'm writing life saving software or something. It can wait if we can't finish it within a full time work week
