Love how you can still see all the pollution in that picture of Vancouver at the top of the link.

But yeah its obvious that the levels will decrease... Im waiting to see its impact on the melting ice.

Avengers: Endgame played with this idea - fewer people means less pollution, means overall levels decrease.

In our current situation, everyone trying to stay home means fewer cars on the road, non-essential businesses being closed means less energy consumption, and so on.

I have to apply tomorrow. I have a phone number if anyone needs it. They opened this line to take some of the traffic away from the standard lines.

Also, if anyone is wondering, this is basically EI without the taxes afaik. Maximum EI is $562/week but its taxed. You cant collect both at the same time.

Yeah, EI applications are automatically being transferred to CERB. CERB is a more streamlined process that should actually get money to people in a timely fashion, since the usual EI process was hopelessly underequipped to handle the massive volume of applications this has brought on. Given that it just launched two days ago, she'll probably still have a bit of a wait, but hopefully it should come soon.

It is taxable. Part of the application includes indicating your tax status. If you really need it, odds are you won't be paying much by way of taxes on it, but do be sure to keep some of it earmarked to pay back when tax season rolls around next year.

I got $2000 bucks today - I was laid off from my job at an optometry office.

Probably going to be reimbursed $500 for rent as well, I'm unsure if I get the provincial $1000 (all of the reporting on all of this has been somewhat all over the place), and that's before regular EI payments.

I will still be relieved when this is all over but...I'll take the paid vacation. I'm antisocial. All good.

When I called in, the robot asked for my SIN and birth year. It listed off a bunch of requirements, told me fraud is bad, said Id have to repay portions Im not entitled to, and then said Press one to accept. I think its basically the honour system, but I didnt have to go over any tax stuff on the phone. I hope the $500/week is pre-taxed, otherwise its not entirely truthful to say $2,000 will be deposited within three days. You cant imply ~ in speech haha.

When did you apply?

Is the rent refund provincial or federal?

Which province is giving $1,000?

I did mine online, which basically went through the full regular EI application, including some stuff about taxes.

It's not, as I understand it. You get the full amount regardless of tax bracket, then any taxes you owe on it you'll have to pay back next year. It makes sense, since calculating every applicant's taxes would slow down the process dramatically and the whole point of this is to get people their money asap, but it does mean you'll have to be diligent about how much of it you spend.

I thought taxes were based on income in real-time. So if the amount is $2,000, then the taxes should all be the same.

By real-time, I mean theyre calculated to the minute, technically, each pay period (especially when overtime pay is a factor, or you missed a day) versus taxing you once on the total amount you made in a year.

And if we dont work this year, how are they expecting us to pay that back?

Unless you get disability... Im assuming the federal government isnt going to count that as income. In which case youd automatically get ~$3,150 without working. ~$4,150 if you were able to get enough hours.

No, they still only get $2000. You're just allowed to make up to $1000/month before you lose benefits.

It was meant to help out freelancers, self employed, and part time workers who technically weren't out of a job but are making a fraction of what they were due to lost clients or reduced hours. Plenty of stories of people saying "sorry, I can't send you this invoice for $150, because if I do I can't get the CERB benefit". So they're allowing you to make a little bit of money before they take you off CERB.

FYI, you have to apply for every period individually. If you applied for March-April then youll only receive $2,000 for that period.

You either do your best to save people or you save the economy. In not saving the economy youre also putting many thousands out as well. Tough to weigh those options, I guess.
