The argument would be, if it was accurate, that communities largely populated by people of color have less access to quality health care on average than predominantly white communities, for the reasons she states.

Thus the virus would be disproportionately affecting them due to systemic racism built into the fabric of the nation, and you can make a case for reparations because of it.

And yeah, I dont know if theres any evidence of her statement or not. I know Wang said that one of the hardest hit communities was Hispanic, which would typically fall under the umbrella of black and brown people, at least in the way she means it.

I think in this context, focusing on the racial connotations of Hispanic vs White is missing the point she's making. "Black and brown" isn't purely racial and also meant to be inclusive of ethnic groups that are sometimes considered racially "white" (latino, middle eastern, north african and egyptian, etc.).

Also the data on the census is skewed. Most of my family is not white(I am white skinned because my dads side of the family is not latino origin) but by the criteria given to us on the census we are all considered white.

Though I guess I'll add that AOC's point is generally correct but the use of the term "reparations" is awkward and is undermining her point. In the context of the US that's an overwhelming majority of the time referring specifically to reparations for slavery so it's just...really misleading because that's not always going to be accurate even if the other stuff she's talking about is.

there is but i don't know the numbers off the top of my head. Mexicans are the biggest group of hispanics and they go majority white - this is clear by the sheer volume. Dominicans are more likely to mix it up since a lot are black or brown, so you'll see them likely go mixed races (which yes those are an option too, i just didn't bother including that earlier), black, or American Indian. Puerto Ricans and Cubans will heavily skew white. Central/South Americans i'd expect a mix of white, indian, and non specified.

but this is seriously extremely well established. it's been the subject of a lot of discussion but it's consistent that even among those who consider being hispanic/latino as a strong part of their identity as a race, white wins as the category. even among that group, it's the 2nd most common view of how others see them too (first being "Hispanic").

i mean hell, Washington Post mentioned it in their section on myths in 2019.

Brown isnt like an official census thing, its more of a social/colloquial thing. I think it can cover Latinos and also Arabs and Indians (from India, not native Americans) and stuff.

Like even if someone from the Middle East would technically check the white box on a census form, theyre not white in the way a French guy would be.
