It might not be a bad idea to wear one going for groceries, but it's not like they're readily available at this point, and any I could get my hands on would be better donated to hospitals because they're horribly under-supplied. I'd also have to take my beard off to get any actual use out of one.

No. Just make some sort of effort to avoid being right in others' faces and it's fine.

A number of markets that I've been to are already enforcing that "six feet" rule at the checkouts, which is good enough.

I work at a grocery and don't use one. They don't help unless you have it. Otherwise your eyes are still exposed and there is no airtight seal.

Those masks are meant for surgery, aka preventing crap from leaving your body.

To be fair they probably do help, if I look it up I see some doctors saying they do and some saying they don't.

I've been wearing one for the last two weeks basically any time I've been around other people in the interest of keeping my germs to myself. I think I started wearing it about a week too late to prevent myself from getting sick this week, but I feel better that I at least did something to prevent myself from spreading it before I had any symptoms (I've stayed home since I started getting a sore throat at work on Tuesday)

those arent the masks I see most people around here wearing but those absolutely do block a large percentage of particles from being inhaled. Theyre a lot better than nothing and even better than a scarf or bandana which is what a lot of people are using

those masks are literally the exact PPE used in hospitals when interacting with patients that are under droplet contagious precautions, so the idea that they exist only to prevent particles from infecting others is downright inane

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surgical_mask
A surgical mask, also known as a procedure mask, medical mask or simply as a face mask,[1][2] is intended to be worn by health professionals during surgery and during nursing to catch the bacteria shed in liquid droplets and aerosols from the wearer's mouth and nose. They are not designed to protect the wearer from inhaling airborne bacteria or virus particles and are less effective than respirators, such as N95 or FFP masks, which provide better protection due to their material, shape and tight seal.

Listen, name one thing I said that doesn't line up word for word with the wikipedia article for face masks. People have no business wearing them unless they're taking care of coronavirus infected people or if they have coronavirus. The CDC does not recommend promote or condone walking around in public with a face mask.

Otherwise get off your fucking soap box and stop spreading misinformation.

The masks aren't to stop YOU from getting infected, they're to reduce the risk to OTHERS if you're already infected and don't know it. Just about anything that will reduce the travel of airborne particles will help. It's not 100% effective, but even a partial reduction will slow the rate of infection substantially.

yeah because obviously something that filters particles in the air wont stop particles when you inhale, only when you exhale

if people have face coverings, they should use them

Oh and guess what? Just today the CDC did announce today that face masks are recommended by random people walking around, whereas the who does not.

https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public/when-and-how-to-use-masks

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/cloth-face-cover.html

Great thanks for telling me mead. Really cleared that up. But I'm still on team face mask bad.

It's almost as if I was correct in saying the experts are giving conflicting opinions and your hipster ass attacked me for some dumb reason anyway.

Of course a face covering is better than nothing that is basic common sense dude. Nobody is claiming any kind of PPE is gonna make you immune to anything but the fact is that most people cant get an N95 mask, dont know how to wear it correctly, and theyre difficult for most people to wear while even mildly active or for an extended period of time.

A surgical mask isnt gonna stop as many droplet particles as an actual respirator but its gonna do a lot more than just a scarf or bandana.
