depends. does it disable a few sata ports? do you need the extra speed for anything?

No, you will not notice a difference really between the two. M.2 is technically faster, but i doubt you have anything that would actually test it

I bought M.2 instead of a normal SATA so I guess that was't a terrible decision. As far as I know it doe't disable any sata ports on my MB

IIRC its NVME drives that don't disable them, where as normal M.2 do

If you have an m.2 port, try going for an nvme SSD, cause those are up to 7x faster than regular SSDs currently (or thereabouts?)

M.2 can be SATA as well and preforms identical to a normal cable SATA. NVMe is what's super fast though gamers aren't going to notice.

M.2 is just a form factor, you can have either Sata M.2s which are the same speed as Sata 2.5 inch SSDs or NVMe drives which are usually faster.
