Poll of the Day > Amazon is lying about their delivery dates

So, I ordered some items on 3/28, about 10 days ago. The entire time, including right now as I speak in the afternoon/evening hours of April 6th, it has shown a delivery range of April 6-9.
It has yet to even be shipped out.
And I don't have prime, so the free shipping method itself is 5-8 business days all on its own (ie, to meet that April 6-9 range, it should have left the warehouse 5 days ago).
It's clearly not going to arrive in the date range they claim or even close to it, nor do I have any indication when it'll ever actually get started.

I've contacted the help via chat and just get some run around about "priority for COVID-19 essential items." Which...fine... If you're not gonna ship my stuff for a month or whatever due to priorities, then that's your call.
But don't lie to the customer and claim otherwise. When I contacted the help, I asked a simple question...so when is the actual delivery estimate? That's it. That's all I want to know.
I could've ordered this stuff separately from different stores and it'd have arrived by now. And now I'm kinda trapped in a sunk cost situation where if I do cancel and buy from elsewhere, I've gotta wait another nearly two weeks when maybe it really is shipping from Amazon soon....

Anyone else having this issue?

I have literally never had that problem.

Though it's also worth noting that they're currently undergoing record-breaking stress on their systems as everyone in the world is ordering stuff from them because no one wants to leave the house, so they're probably not capable of maintaining their prior standards at the moment.

True. The delivery date was a few days later than usual, I figured this accounted for it. Clearly the situation is much worse.
My only gripe is they don't give the customer an accurate view of just how bad the delays are. If I knew it was that bad, I wouldn't have gone to them in the first place. It's clear as mud from my end.
The guy I talked to said it was in a "shipping soon phase". I asked how long it's been in that phase, b/c if it's been there for a week it doesn't really mean anything. He didn't know that information, but agreed w/ my assessment, lol

It hasn't even reached the delivery phase yet. I'm sure that will be an additional delay.
They haven't even packaged my order yet.

My point was, they probably don't even know. They're dealing with a situation literally no one anticipated and which nothing in their company (or any other company) was ever really designed to deal with.

Their estimated delivery dates on the site are likely automated, with the site itself calculating out the assumed shipping/delivery time based on a number of pre-established factors, but it's unable to account for the unpredictable delays caused by being 20 minutes away from the end of the world.

And presumably, they have neither the time nor motivation to try and change how the coding on the site works to compensate for that, because, you know, they're already stressed past capacity because of the aforementioned "everyone's getting literally everything delivered" and "20 minutes away from the end of the world" things.

Apparently they are changing it though, or articles like this I've found when google searching wouldn't exist.

https://www.vox.com/recode/2020/3/22/21190372/amazon-prime-delivery-delays-april-21-coronavirus-covid-19

On Sunday, customers and Amazon merchants posted on social media platforms saying certain nonessential items were showing April 21 delivery dates, even though they were listed as in-stock and shipping with Amazons Prime express shipping service. During normal times, Amazon Prime deliveries typically arrive in one or two days in the US. Now, some Prime deliveries for in-stock items are showing five-day delivery promises on the lower end, but those waits are as long as a month on some items.
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to Recode on Sunday evening that the new April 21 delivery dates are not the result of a technical bug or error; they accurately reflect Amazons current reality.

Mine wasn't nearly that long of a delay, at least not officially. Is it in reality? Sure would be nice to know!

We got laundry pods a day earlier than stated.

That being said I already know my birthday gift is going to be late... Whatever it is. There's no way it's getting here in 2 weeks with everything on fire.

I'm not even mad. I'm disappointed that my usual yearly party is likely pushed back, but I get that things are way worse going on.

I do, however, understand the frustration of getting a date that's not correct.

Our worst issues have been with individuals (selling broken blind box items they clearly raided and restocked with commons, one literally missing parts off of it) or USPS (wtaf is 'when I went back to where I left it, it was gone'? WTF are you leaving multiple packages just somewhere?). Amazon has always taken steps to make things right.

I've seen it where it sits for a while with no activity and then arrives to me within a day or two after the first initial update on the status.

I think the shipping speed literally just decides where you lie on their priority.

Yeah. I ordered mine like the 28th, and one of my orders said it would get here until like the 2nd, even though I have prime (which is still weird because the other package arrived last week still, but whatever). I figured it was coming late because of the virus and stuff. But it didn't arrive until today. I already know the package was going to take longer. No need to lie about it, as well...

It's amazing that after years of no complaints at all from me, that they predicted a week ahead of time that I'd politely request a status update when there was no change in it and knew to really stick it to me!
What incredible foresight they had!
Considering I only reached out AFTER it was clearly late!

Another brilliant post from Sunny, everybody.

Every customer complaint is justified by terrible employees. Customer expectations are never overblown. It's silly to even consider the idea that a customers actual experience is completely different than what they claimed. Nobody ever embellishes.

The only oddity for me was when I thought I would be getting the most recent Dominion expansion when it came out on March 16. The delivery dated was changed to like September 16 just days before it was supposed to ship. Some digging indicated before the shipment from the game manufacture had been delayed due to COVID.

Stranger still, I got an alert that it shipped today, but still says it won't arrive until September. So yeah, I guess their algorithm is being a bit wonky.

The enforced social distancing at my local Fulfillment center is slowing things down

The people packing have to space out, therefore that department is running at half speed

If they have to slow down, so do all the other departments, trucks go out half full, essential items remain in storage for a longer period of time..

I'm sure its company wide now after what happened in New York... so where are they putting the 100,000 extra employees they are hiring?

Their system is messed up right now. I had a bluray come 3 days after release (which is fine), RE3 said it wasn't coming until the 14th but arrived on release day. Today Ingot an email saying FFVII and the vinyl soundtrack of the game might not arrive by release date. The soundtrack was released on March 27th so I guarantee it's not going to get here by release day.
