Crusader: No Remorse (Origin)

Fun game. Gameplay took a while to get used to as I'm not very used to isometric games, but once I got the hang of it I enjoyed my time. Controls are normally a make-or-break deal for me, but I was able to get through this game despite the controls being GODAWFUL. They actually got worse over time, as I was able to move with holding RMB at first, but for some reason that totally glitched out on the final two missions and I had to start using the arrow keys. Not great considering that slowed my shooting and enemies in the final missions hit hard.

Anyway, fun setting, great cutscenes (man, FMV is such a hoot), an astonishing OST (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSF4LJLYByU this is the first mission for crying out loud) but godawful controls. I don't own the sequel and I'm wondering if I should find some way to put in my collection so I might play it someday.

Super Mario Sunshine (Switch)
First time I've ever beaten this game. My brother lost our copy a few years back and I've been itching to play it, so I was looking forward to this for the last two weeks. Couldn't put it down.

That being said, it pales in comparison to 64, which is my favorite game of all time, but still a very solid 3D platformer. I was totally fine with the new controls after about 10 minutes. Some shines were REALLY annoying though (the rematch with Petey, and a couple of the secrets). I think I got one of them through a glitch (cleaning up Sirena Beach... I was nowhere near done when the thing said I finished).

Resident Evil 4

A conversation with a friend reminded me I both have this game and have never gotten past the first village (mostly because I was playing it as the wrong type of game; there is no no-kill stealth in Resident Evil, and worrying about ammo like previous entries barely mattered with how much you get and find over the course of the game).

Beat the game over the weekend. It was very fun, some great action, some cool enemies, and I liked Ashley far more than expected from horror stories over the years (aside from her constant Baby Mario cries for help in the late game). It was quite solid. My biggest complaints surround the story beats themselves what with the villain's plans no longer working as soon as he says them out loud and random ass Luis Sera cutscenes to make you remember he's still around guys.

Bug Fables (PC)

They aimed to make a real Paper Mario game after 15 years and totally nailed. The gameplay is a straight upgrade from TTYD, being more balanced and more challenging while also having its own style. The worldbuilding is fantastic, with tons of lore and characters that leave you thirsty for more games, and the main cast being very likable and having great character arcs.

Music is great. The graphics are a little basic though, especially the backgrounds, which makes sense because it's an indie. But the amount of content is basically of a full game, and you can see they put an amount of love and effort here to deliver all of it. This will take you over 40 hours to beat if you explore every corner and talk to everyone.

If you like Mario RPGs go play this ASAP, it's one of the best ones, and in many ways, it makes Mario RPGs obsolete. Like a reviewer put it, it's not the third Paper Mario, it's the first Bug Fables.

The fact this did not appear in GotD is an absurd. I will rally the hell out of it next contest.

Kill la Kill: IF (PS4)

Decent arena fighter, nice to have both an English dub (since I watched the series on Adult Swim I was more familiar with the dub voices) and full voice acting throughout the game. There's also some nice extra modes after you complete the storyline. The auto-target, while good for the 1v1 fights, fails when there's more than one target on the field and could use improvement.

Wow what a trip. Was supposed to beat this right after I beat Dead Island ages ago, but my PC couldn't apparently handle it. I love the open world aspect, the zombie physics, and the parkour. I hate the grinding though. I wish durability wasn't a thing in this game and I could just enjoy the game without having to scavenge half the time.

Dying Light: The Following DLC (PC)

Can't say its better. They improved some of the monsters, but it's essentially the same but more horizontal instead of vertical. The game gives you a vehicle from the get go and encourages you to use it by way of having every single location veeeery far from each other. Would have been fine like a Far Cry game if most of the quests weren't Fetch Quests. It was okay in the original because it encouraged you to parkour and the tight spaces really made things interesting. But after mowing the same kinds of zombies the first 2 hours the novelty gets old real fast.

The dark twist was nice. Driving down and exploring the countryside was nice. But the whole forced mechanic of having to drive around and don't even get me started on how your car has 6 stats that each need to be monitored and constantly repaired. Just sounds like another layer of distraction. Ultimately, a beautiful game but kind of annoying in its mechanics.

Jazz Jackrabbit (PC)

Thank you GOG for finally allowing me to play this game in its entirety. I have fond memories playing episode 1 over and over and I never thought I would see the rest of it in my lifetime. So is it a good game? It's got its flaws and after a few levels and episodes it started getting samey but what I really appreciate is the effort going into making sure that each of the 3-Planet episodes were distinct not only in design but each one had its own unique music, enemies, and layout. Imagine that, Epic actually putting in the effort to make something appealing.

Also extra hilarious is a name I never thought I would see. There in the credits receiving top billing is
Cliff Bleszinski lol.

Debtor (Switch)

You play as some mafia guy who wakes up from an ambulance ride and is going through some dungeons to collect your debt. You move blocks, headbutt blocks and use bombs on enemies/blocks. Short but fun. Good music.

Corridor Z (Switch)

This was a fun take on an autorunner and was pretty addicting for awhile. Got it for a penny. You play as either a jock, cheerleader and a jarhead and you keep running towards the screen (think Crash Bandicoot boulder scene) while knocking things over to slow the zombie hordes down while shooting at them. I unlocked all the cutscenes, two other characters, journal diaries, audio logs, clues, maxed out the weapons and unlocked all the costumes.

Funny Bunny Adventures (Switch)

Got this game for free. You go around planting carrots and picking them up while avoiding a witch and a hunter with a net. It was ok.

Pizza Bar Tycoon (Switch)

Got this for free. I guess this was my first Diner Dash like game. You make pizzas and serve them to customers. It was fun and addicting.

Super Mario All Stars - Super Mario Bros. 3 (SNES)

Played this with a friend online via Switch. My friend was Mario and I was Luigi. We went through all the worlds, no warps and beat all the levels. I ended up beating Bowser with the Hammer Bros. Suit for the first time!

Mana Spark Forgotten Crypts (Switch)

I liked the update for this game. They added a whole new area, new items, new skill upgrades for your characters, new enemies, new final boss and a new character. Galiana and her dog Bisca are a very welcome addition. She uses a boomerang and when it hits the enemy the dog follows up with an attack. I also like her skill upgrade: You can revive bats/spiders that you killed and they join your side at the cost of some life. The new boss was also a lot more challenging than the previous final boss.

Food Truck Tycoon (Switch)

Just like Pizza Bar Tycoon but with a lot of new mechanics.

Dead Dungeon (Switch)

Fun Super Meatboy-lite like game. Good music (done by HateBit who also did the music for Debtor as well) and I had fun with it.

Altered Beast (Switch)

Played this via co-op on Switch with the Sega Genesis Classics. Sadly me and my friend suffered with a one button delay with lag. We can play all of our other games just fine with a great connection on our other Switch gams except for Sega Genesis Classics (and NES Switch for whatever reason)

Perseverance (Switch)

I never felt so mad after finishing this visual novel. They advertised this game as you playing as two characters (WRONG, you only play with one) and you can shape the way your character can be with the choices you make (just different dialogue). The game ended abruptly after an hour and it left me wanting more when the story started to get remotely interesting near the end. Then I saw the dreaded "To Be Continued" at the end. It's been 2 years and I don't think they'll be making that sequel anytime soon...I deleted it afterward. Good thing I got it for cheap ($0.49)

Burger Chef Tycoon (Switch)

More of the same but I liked it. I think it's the most challenging one I've played so far from these games and by challenging, going for all the three star rankings.

Food Truck Tycoon - Asian Cuisine (Switch)

Again, more of the same. The music is surprisingly catchy.

Mutant Mudds Deluxe (Switch)

Played via Mutant Mudds Collection. I really liked this one. You play as Max and have to stop the Mutant Mudds from invasion. Fun action/platformer. I liked the whole jumping in and out from the background/foreground (Just like in Xeodrifter!)

Mutant Mudds Super Challenge (Switch)

Played via Mutant Mudds Collection. A sequel to the first game and I think it's the better game (though the first one is still good!). I liked that they added boss battles in this one.

S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team (NES)

Played via NES Switch. This game flew under my radar and I'm glad I finally got to spend time to play it. Pretty neat shoot em' up with the ability to position your orbs in different shooting positions.

Bleed

I think I only knew of this game from a top games list transience did a couple years ago (I know he has since done at least one more updated list). Picked it and the sequel up on the cheap a while back for Switch and randomly decided to play it.Great game. In a world where Metroidvanias are everywhere (rightfully so), we still need more quality sidescrolling shooters like this.

Beat all the levels on hard now and will probably attempt very hard soon. Then on to Bleed 2.

Vaporum: Lockdown (PC)

Back in 2017, my impression of Vaporum was that it was Grimrock but SCIENCE! It followed the same formula---a 10-storey tower of increasingly difficult oldschool RPG goodness. But that it was geared more towards combat than anything. It was cute. Admirable. But Grimrock was vastly superior.

Now the prequel dares to be formidable on its own. Huge levels and even though it's set in the same place, the game makes it look like there's more to the tower than going floor by floor. There were objectives that gave you a pseudo-opennes to it and even if it wasn't, the design flowed well that you knew where to go.

This time not only did they have an equal amount of puzzles and combat, but the puzzles themselves were quite devious especially if you're into spatial stuff. These aren't just your everyday push-block puzzles either. It's got some of the most inventive use of its own mechanics that I haven't honestly seen since The Talos Principle. I also appreciate that each puzzle (except the bonus ones) were still within confined rooms, furthering the theme of constriction that the tower always had, something that could contrast to Grimrock's already open areas.

I guess if I had something to say against it it would be that this time there isn't alot of combat going on. By the time I finished I had 400 ammo and a couple of cool shit I wanted to test my gear on only to find out it was over and that the 10th floor was actually a bonus puzzles floor. But that could easily be rectified by playing on a higher difficulty. All in all best sleeper follow-up to an somewhat forgettable indie I've played this year.

Oh and the story's still not as interesting. Which is fine. I don't really care about lore when it's for a game like this.

Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin

Definitely enjoyed DS1 more, but still had fun with this. Definitely a lot more bosses, and some were good. Fuck the Bell Gargoyles . One mechanic I really didn't like was the fact that your max HP dropped every time you died. Usually I didn't mind dying as much, even if I lost my souls, because then I could learn from each death and try different things. I feel with this mechanic, that was harder to accomplish, especially when we start talking about the DLCs....

Dark Souls 2: Crown of the Sunken King DLC

I know it's not technically its own game, but I'm gonna treat them as such just to talk about them.

Shulva was a cool place to navigate, though was ambushed by those knights a bunch of times. The mad dash around the Dragon Sanctum while those ghost warriors chased me to find their physical bodies was pretty exhilarating. The 3-on-1 boss fight was fairly annoying, mainly because of the run to get to them (stupid petrify statues...). Elana was brutal, as every time I turned to deal with the skeletons, I got murdered by those dark magic balls. Sinh was definitely the best boss fight of this DLC. Took a few tries, but got it figured out.

Will be updating this/making a new post with the second DLC once I finish it, still have a couple bosses to beat there. Though as an aside, I did indeed beat Fume Knight after like, literally 40 tries.

Dark Souls 2: Crown of the Old Iron King DLC

This was definitely more difficult than the last DLC. Having to deal with all those damn idols was annoying, as were those giant metal warriors that spewed lava. Very large area, but was pretty cool to explore.

Regarding bosses, this DLC had two of the best in the game, easily. Fume Knight and Sir Alonne were both awesome fights, even if the Fume Knight battle took me 30-40 tries (that long sword sweep was devastating). The run up to Sir Alonne was awful though. As was the run to Smelter Demon 2.0, since I had so many issues with the first one, way back.

One more DLC to go, then likely onto either Dark Souls 3 or Sekiro.

Metro Exodus (PC)

I remember being excited for this. When I started it last year, I remember being engrossed in it. I loved the open-world aspect and the bond you shared with the Aurora crew. Then I guess I got burned out. I wouldn't touch it for so long sitting in my Desktop until today. By then everything I remembered what I liked about Exodus had gone and I mean, I was just glad to get this out of the way. Maybe I'll go back to find the secrets but it's just so annoying that I have to restart entire "Chapters" of open worlds to do it. Glad I went on hiatus exactly after those sequences.

Despite the game taking place above ground, I wish it was still under. And really the final part of the game was a love letter to that. But it also told me that after 2 games of this, I don't think any more could be done with the formula. I'm glad Artyom's story is over though.

It's not so cliche anymore when it's happening to you.

The Unfinished Swan (PC)

Was a pretty neat game. I really liked the game mechanics, though they were fairly simple. The way the story was told was really nifty as well. I wish the puzzles were a bit more difficult, or that the game went on a bit longer. But overall fairly enjoyable for a short romp.

Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep - Final Mix (PS3)

Thoroughly enjoyed this. I enjoyed the different characters and their playstyles; Terra felt so unlike other KH protagonists with how slow and unagile he was, Ventus felt like a Drive-form at all times and Aqua was wet paper tissue...until she got spells, and then she turned into the biggest, most destructive glass cannon I've ever had the pleasure of playing with. That girl kills, yo.

The story was typical KH shenanigans. It was probably even more so; especially Terra's story suffered from an overabundance of darkness darkness friends light darkness darkness. I did enjoy some of the plot twists, but I can't tell if I enjoy them for what they are or because it was silly. While the different main characters were cool, the Disney worlds felt kind of sparse and short a lot of the times. Each character kinda had a few worlds that felt a bit longer and more expansive, but it definitely felt way more like background rather than something that had really been crafed.

Melding was a really cool way to get new skills and build abilities. I think the only flaw with it for me was just how unintuitive it was. Figuring out how to make Firaga wasn't hard, but all the other cool abilities really kind of feel like a trial-and-error, which isn't that bad, but it can be a chore if you don't get anything interesting and then have to grind that ability back up again so you can try out some stuff.

I didn't do much with the Command Board; it was neat but a bit too slow for my liking. Disney Town minigames were fine; the driving one was confusing but once you knew the shortcuts it was fine, Fruitball was hectic fun and Ice Cream Beat is a hellspawn that must be eradicated from existence as soon as possible.

Kudos to the Final Mix people for dropping me out of my chair with the extra level and boss in the Secret Ending. It was a bit disappointing given the limited amount of different Heartless to fight, but oh well. The secret boss was really tough, which also made me realize something about BBS in comparison to other KH games; I feel like it's a lot more defensive/patience-based than other KH games that I played (not counting secret/hidden bosses). Wonder what side the other KH games will be...

I > BBS > II > CoM

I have a real soft spot for I, BBS just has so many cool combat moves and it's been quite a while since I played II, so we'll see if it climbs again in the future. CoM was fine but I definitely didn't understand the combat system well enough when I played it. Wonder if I should replay it on GBA or PS3?

How paralyzingly dull, boring and tedious!
