This doesn't even necessarily apply to this story, cause I'll admit it's way too ambiguous and there's no audio. it applies to the people always babbling "you CAN'T HIT PEOPLE OVER WORDS", even in topics about incidents with certified video footage of a provocative racist asshole.

Yeah, you're right, you legally can't, but that doesn't mean I'm going to feel sympathy for someone who does get hit. Maybe just... don't say provocative shit if you don't want people to get provoked idk.

Because the dude only turned his phone on because the employee said it. Was he supposed to invent a time machine so he could go back and capture the racism? And he had no idea his brother was going to start punching the guy. He turned on the camera to get a recording of the guy being a racist jerk but then his brother went off instead.

In fact, if we're being serious, here's how I'm willing to bet the investigation went. Loss Prevention got the security footage from the store. They edited it down to a 30 second audio-less clip that was then passed on to HR. HR reviewed the 30 second clip, didn't see the employee physically interact with the customers, and ruled it unprovoked. That was your Macys investigation.

As an insult clearly, to those that use it it essentially means "primitive" as far as I can tell. Also, because their heads are full of misinformation and lazy generalizations about large groups of people based upon skin shades alone. Finally they use it because they are angry, there are countless crazy beliefs at the source of this anger (white genocide/replacement being the most commonly invoked) and there really isn't any quelling this anger with logic. These people need to see the holes in their worldview firsthand before change even becomes possible, until that point any random thing could give some twisted belief just enough validation to embolden them to do weird shit.
So you see, the why they said it is never important, it always boils down to a balance between stupid and crazy.
Now then, you shouldn't assault someone over words, no matter how stupid/crazy those words were the jail time is never worth it.

You guys will come in there and the first thing you'll complain about is the reaction and not the action. Hell, it's not even gonna be a "both sides are wrong". It's the first thing you'll complain about because it's higher on your radar, the same way that for a lot of people, the riots were higher on their radar than... the series of events that led to them.

Everyone knows where your energy truly is

i'd rather talk about solid stories that exist than hypotheticals
if you're just into talking theory about this, here you go:

people should not be hateful in speech and actions. if they are hateful in either a casual or direct way, they may be met with physical repercussions by the recipient of their hate speech/actions. however, the person enforcing the street justice will ultimately have to face a real justice system because you are not allowed to physically injure other people in our civilized society and we try our best on the whole to enforce that.

personally i am not interested in hitting people over things they say, but if someone else chooses to hit people over things they say then they should realize there are legal ramifications for that.

I've had friends vent on social media about how they nearly snapped at their jobs or just going about town minding their own business. Slight racist remarks and selective treatment. No, it's not being straight Karen'd or executed, it's still offensive in its own way, dealing with it every single day.

Black people have to go every day being subtly slighted by every other race and ethnicity out there that have bought into white supremacy and racism. And the beauty of it is all those subtle microaggressions are masked as normal occurrences, providing convenient plausible deniability.

• Checking/clutching bags/pockets
• Covering noses
• Putting hands on head/running fingers through hair
• Pulling up hoodies or collars
• Rattling keys or coins
• Followed/watched while shopping
• Waiting longer to be served than other people who came after

Just reading words on a screen, some of these may seem absurd or even paranoid, but they are real actions perpetrated by real people for the sole purpose to insult Black people. It happens too often to be written off as circumstance.

Actively being dehumanized/criminalized on a daily basis simply for existing, without a hint of knowledge of the content of the character they're offending, and being powerless to do anything about, it would be enough to drive someone who's had enough to violence. But of course, that's exactly the endgame of those offenders, knowing it won't end well for the offendee.

I don't doubt for a second that the man on the phone said what he said. The attacker didn't just randomly choose some poor guy to wail on. But the optics look bad, and it's his word against the victim, Macy's, and every non-Black (not other poc; Black) person reading or watching this story.

For the record, the statement I read from Macys does NOT say that. They just say the physical attack was "unprovoked." It's HIGHLY unlikely the security footage has audio, so there is probably no way Macys can make a determination about what somebody said. I would interpret the statement from Macys to mean that the employee didn't physically provoke the customers.

then why were some people saying the attacker was screaming "don't touch me don't touch me" as he beat the guy up? how do they know that if there is no audio? also if that dialogue is true, in the moment right after the supposed n word, he is not making any mention of it? he only said it later long after the incident. he never accused the man of saying the n word in the moment. you'd think he would have brought it up if that is what set him off. also again, there were other people in the store. nobody but the attacker is saying they heard the n word. I think it's possible he misheard a different word said into the phone. I find it very unlikely a macys worker would be so blatent and so stupid. and so pointless too. even the biggest racists aren't that dumb
