Which of these approaches do you like better?

To give a little more clarity on what I mean, it seems like 3D platformers typically go in one of two directions:
- Collect-a-thons, which typically give you big open spaces in which to explore and figure out how to reach new areas so you can collect whatever collectible is needed to progress.
- Obstacle courses, which more closely imitate the structure of 2D platformers. These are more linear and your main goal is just to reach the end of each level.

Obviously there can be overlap, and elements of one style can appear in games that are mainly the other.

I like both but if I had to choose I'd choose collectathons since they have more to do and have more replay value.

I think I like the big open worlds more than 3D World style stuff. Mostly cuz I feel like doing fast paced platforming works better in 2D than 3D.

Obstacle course. Collectathons usually have too much padding.

Obstacle course design usually draws a lot of attention to the mechanics and level design, which I like.

I like collectathons a tad more, because I tend to like exploring a big playground-like fantasy world more than I do more reflex-driven platformers.
