Teddy, FDR, and James Monroe (super underrated; was so damn popular he ran unopposed for his 2nd term and one renegade elector was all that kept him from being the only guy besides Washington to have 100% of the electors) are, alongside Lincoln and Washington (of course), the best presidents.

IMO.

I'd put FDR in there as well because had it not been for FDR and his New Deal Programs that helped pull America from the throes of the Great Depression, the Middle Class probably doesn't exist and working class people aren't afford a family home because those New Deal programs spawned all of that in the 1930s/1940s and the G.I. Bill helped returning servicemen attend college when they probably wouldn't have otherwise.

A lot of the economic recovery had nothing to do with the president and FDR's programs have had long-term harms. Plus America's post-war success had less to do with government programs and more to do with the fact that America's infrastructure was in better shape than other nations because we weren't being bombed.

Thank you for that reminder. With the exception of Pearl Harbor (and I guess Midway), I something forget the country itself was for the most part left untouched compared to the other Allied and Axis forces.

Eh, lets just go with the joke answer: Taft.

After all, he literally got stuck in his bathtub once. In a pre-modern-media setting to boot, and yet we still all seem to remember that incident as the thing to remember him by.

You go, Taft! Get stuck in your bath!

That story is and has always been bullshit, and even people at the time knew it. It's like the whole George Washington cutting down the cherry tree thing - it was never entirely meant to fool people who knew better, but the made-up story was more interesting than the truth so the truth was effectively erased and the only thing people remember any more is the lie.

This is why we need better education in schools. Preferably a class that does nothing but debunk stupid stories like spinach being a super-food (a story based on a single typo and perpetuated for nearly 100 years, and the reason why it basically gives Popeye superpowers) or the horseshit about how humans only use 10% of their brains.

People really like FDR? The dude who had Japanese internment camps? The dude who turned Jews away that were fleeing from Germany in WWII? FDR was one of the most racist presidents but is still loved somehow. I don't get how liberals can defend tearing down statues of racists, and non racists who did nothing to deserve it, like Grant, but still love FDR despite his hatred for black people, jews, and asians.

He was right 30% of the time and he was a Democrat, therefore they haven't stopped jerking off over him for 80 years.

Also, you forgot the time when he was mad because the Supreme Court told him he couldn't do something, so he wanted to change the law to increase the number of justices so he could flood the court with loyalists who would rubber stamp anything he wanted. The threat of which terrorized the court into being less antagonistic in the future, for fear that he'd push to fuck with them if they dared block too many of his proposals.

The same way we still fondly remember the founding fathers.

There is a difference between people known only for racism and people primarily known for other things.

People don't tend to rate Andrew Jackson too poorly, hell he's on the 5 dollar bill, and that bastard committed genocide.

People need to remember what the U.S. as a whole was like back then. STRONGLY isolationist, didn't want to get involved in another war at all. And pretty fucking racist, and had a disturbing amount of nazi sympathizers (some things never seem to change).
FDR seemed to do as much as he could to help the allies and defeat the nazis without getting voted out of office.

$20 bill. And Jackson is the objectively worst president in history. He isn't rated too poorly, but he should be at the bottom.
The Indian Removal Act (ethnic cleansing of Native Americans, and the brutal march that killed so many on the way) and outright ignoring the Supreme Court's ruling that the Cherokee shouldn't be forced out.
Extremely brutal towards slaves even compared to others of his time (offering bonus rewards on captured escaped slaves if the captors beat/whipped them before turning them in)
Being the only president in history to be the sole or at least primary cause of a major recession due to his dissolving of the federal banks in favor of state banks run by his cronies.
Being the initiator of both the "Spoils System" where executive branch jobs are rewarded strictly to political allies and cronies rather than on merit and trying to include opposing parties and the vicious campaign mudslinging we're so accustomed to today (Adams also slung mud in return, but his attacks were typically true while as Jackson's were mostly false smears).
Speaking of lies, he claimed his victory at New Orleans helped lead to favorable peace treaty terms, even though the treaty was signed 2 weeks before the battle took place and he knew this (news was slower back then).

The only thing he was good at was killing people.

I also dislike Hitler. Does that make him a swell guy in your book? I've also never been a fan of Mussolini and Stalin. Are they great guys in your opinion? Using who somebody dislikes as a metric for whether those disliked individuals are good is ridiculously idiotic.

Yeah, FDR had a pretty shitty history. BlackScythe complains about detaining illegal immigrants at the border yet he idolizes FDR who rounded up US citizens on the basis of race and detained them in absolutely horrific camps where thousands died.

tbh, I forgot about that. FDR is just more and more fucked up. Although I guess you can expect that from a guy who cheated on his wife with his own cousin.

Kind of a weird example when discussing the fact that FDR was involved in what could constitute genocide, considering he rounded up people on the basis of race to put them in absolutely atrocious camps where they were starved and denied basic necessities, criteria used to constitute acts of genocide in other countries. Again, thousands of CITIZENS died in FDR's internment camps, generally of things that could have been easily treated or prevented.

Might be Trump by the end of 2020. He keeps making the left look like complete fools.

We'll see. Liberals in the 60's/70's used to be really smart-- "fuck the government" turned into "fuck you if you don't do what you're told"-- then the spectrum shifted, so I might not be knocking liberals, but leftists.

I can't say the real reason I think it could be Trump because I'll get modded again.

[stuff]

Look. Scary things are happening on the left right now. But there are also scary things happening on the right as well.

One thing I don't get though. Why is it that the right tend to care about "pwning the libs" or something, when it is the DEMOCRATS who are their major opponent? Yes, I get that the basic left can be called liberal, and the basic right can be called conservative. But then, why focus on the part of the left that is still the most sane? And not, say, the stupid parts of the left, who are extremists in their own right and full of all the PC crap and such that would, while better than going full fascist, still lead to a future I would prefer to avoid?

Or did the "accepted" definitions for these terms somehow change in the past 4 years again? This happens too often.

But yeah. I guess I'm stuck in some mindset where the liberals are still the guys closer to the center, while the progressives/leftists are the ones who are actually the "alt left equivalent" of the, well, "far alt right." Don't get me wrong, I would prefer far left to far right at this time, if only because the far right's poster child is tweeting white power videos while his white house appointees and campaign seems to make no apologies for what can best be described as "far too many coincidental accidental Nazi messages for it to any longer be a coincidence" while simultaneously basically sabotaging and/or destroying just about every international ally we might have. Save, for you know, Russia, if you believe those stories, but well... if you DO believe those stories, then Trump is being "controlled" by Russia, or is at least gullible enough to just accept something from OANN, which may or may have notable Russians in some control of it.

What is the truth?

What, you think I would know?

Trump and his accomplices have been destroying watchdog after watchdog. International treaty after international treaty. And frankly, it doesn't even matter if its the former at this point. We now know what America is capable of, as does every other nation in the world. America is capable of electing someone like Trump, and then standing aside while he makes a mockery of everything that was supposed to be good about America.

Germany's leadership has already proclaimed that even if Biden wins, it won't fix things (they are probably seeing some vary scary parallels between current USA and... some of the less savory elements of their past this last century, and would prefer we not repeat history). And frankly, I feel the same. America has shown their greatest weakness. Whether it be China or Russia or just the Social Media. Or businesses for that matter, as you guys seem to love letting businesses butt into your politics really easily. The USA are very powerful, but very easily influenced, crippled, and potentially even turned around upon former allies if "need be."

You want a reason to vote against Trump? Well, if you don't care to look at the far-too-many "coincidences" that seem to easily let everyone paint his campaign as trying to recruit so far to the right that they are basically just recruiting neo-Nazis... well then, how about the fact that if he gets another 4 years, there may not even BE any first world nation willing to call themselves an ally of America any longer.

Alas, I am tired, and should rest soon. Good night, everyone.
