The problem is that, regardless of his meaning...Smuffin has an attitude of smug superiority that gets infused in what he says, so even if he was genuinely upset about the wedding situation, he still had to inject that faux swagger into his responses. "It's not REALLY a big deal, but I should still have the freedom to do what I want." instead of "I put a lot of money down and now it's trapped in limbo." The latter would have garnered a ton more sympathy and made him not come across as a heartless jerk, and I even said so at the time. I mean, we would have still disagreed with his message, but at least it would've felt like he was upset about more than just not immediately getting to do what he wanted, when he wanted to do it.

The wedding only came up because way back when, Smuffin was whining about how COVID safety measures were stifling his freedom. Having previously whined about being unable to go to his favorite bar as a result of the safety measures (note: this might have been SephyG, but they're both alt-right jackasses with S names), we called him out on his spoiled and self-centered he was being. HE brought up the wedding in an extremely condescending and flippant matter, and when questioned on the subject, he played the whole ordeal off as not being THAT bad (trying to maintain his libertarian "I'm a tough guy who don't need no one else" persona).

Dumb personal question not really related to any particular news story: Does anyone else know someone who hates Trump for being a racist, but whenever a specific incident happens they always agree with Trump's explanation of how it's really the black guy's fault? If so, is there any way to get such a person to notice the contradiction there, or is it better to just try to ignore them?

I would be so incredibly furious if my year abroad was taken from my fucking couch back home. Going to school in another country was part of my degree, it taught me much of independence, learning about the world at large, and adapting to culture-shock. Living abroad is part of the education, that's exactly why it's part of my degree. It's a far more educational experience than university life itself has shown me.

As for long-term international student's, for fuck's sake these are valuable high-skilled visitors with a lot of cash even if they do intend on staying after graduation, though many return. What the hell are people scared of, it's the literal definition of brain drain for the countries emigrated from.

I think there's at least a chance the rule doesn't end up going into effect, if only because in the past when I've seen universities organize this rapidly against legislation that those laws have not been passed. I realize this is a somewhat different situation but I think there's some possibility here.

We're talking about the ICE thing, right? IIRC this isn't a matter of legislation to be passed or not - it's DHS/ICE issuing or not issuing an exception on this. I posted a twitter thread from an immigration lawyer about this in the last topic but the visa regulations as they stand already forbid online-only from being allowed and he speculated this would be what ICE would hide behind but notes that an exception could easily be granted given the exceptional circumstances of the pandemic.

Consequently, you're talking about the Trump Administration and given that this marries two of Trump's biggest things: cruelty and trying to pretend COVID is over with and everything must open... not sure about the odds here.

For the record they already gave exactly that exception for the spring semester, so it isn't like this is uncharted territory. Of course the political situation is different now than it was 3 months ago but yeah.

I don't know if the odds are good here, to be clear, but I don't think they're near-zero either.

Judging from his campaign, he prioritizes the rest of us tuning out and ignoring politics while he increases US aggression towards Venezuela and North Korea. His major messaging centers around "nothing will fundamentally change", the idea that when I am president you won't ever have to think about who is president, and that Donald Trump is too weak on dictators. Therefore, I would assume his immediate priorities will be to do very little, then ramp up his foreign policy goals after we have tuned out.

Honestly, even with as much awful stuff needs to taken care of, the thing I would want to see first is him cleaning house.

are you suggesting he is proposing fundamental change? or just being finnicky? the context does not effect anything - a minor adjustment to the tax rate that he proposes is not fundamental change, his campaign messaging has been just that things won't be crazy and you won't have to think about who is helming the empire. not that anything will change, just that it will go back to pre-2016. for many people this is comforting, and what they desire, but it is definitely not fundamental change.

If you want to make the argument separate from that quote, go for it. Im just saying that that quote is a dumb gotcha that doesnt mean what anybody who bring it up are implying.

Biden will likely push for big change in some areas (e.g. Id expect policing, guns, climate change) and for incremental change in others. Presidents dont have unlimited political capital, so thats practically not very different from being for huge change for everything but having the same top priorities.
