Would you have fired these brats for doing this?

2 White Teen Employees at Jimmy John's in Georgia have been Fired after they filmed themselves filming a mock racist act using the bread dough!

Snapchat video shows them at a Woodstock location as it went viral over the weekend for 4th of July as a 16 second clip shows them creating these racist acts

A sticker with the "Happy 4th of July" was posted on it as twitter user @urwildlol posted it with the caption "I am disgusted. this is a jimmy johns. please share to get them fired"

A representative said the employees were fired and said the actions seen in the video is completely unacceptable and do not represent their brand and said they will meet with ALL employees INDIVIDUALLY as a group to relay the importance of acceptance, love and kindness so that this doesn't happen again

None of the kids have been identified

Given the social climate of america since the death of George Floyd, it is clear that employers have a no tolerance policy with anybody making any racial statements.

Would you have fired these brats too?

I would have encouraged them to denounce their actions and apologize for their unacceptable behavior and ask for forgiveness, letting them keep their job if they did so with the stern warning that there would be no second chances for that kind of thing. Everyone makes mistakes, what's important is that people are given the opportunity to learn and grow from their mistakes, not immediately and eternally condemned for them.

The fact that those little fucks dependence on a minimum wage job is not worth the bad publicity if JJ did NOT fire them.

Come on, PotD, can we at least try to put on our adult hats on?

Thats a lot of dough too. Like an above poster said, they either A) wasted it($$$ in the toilet) or B) sold it to customers after playing with it.

Doesn't seem racist at all, just stupid kids making a mock noose out of dough. Unless there's some missing piece where they were pretending the hang-ee was black or some other race, I guess.
That said...

This.

Its pretty stupid to do from any angle you look. Looks bad on the company. Its something they simply shouldn't be doing.

I watched the video and in the audio theres no intentional racism I can hear. The "joke" is that hes being sentenced to a hanging, ie wild west style. They also call him Jimmy gallows i believe, a reference to gallows, which has no racial significance. Everyone hangs on the gallows. In popular culture anyway, there is no such sentencing in a lynching. Just racist bullshit.

I would think that if they were dismissed expressly because of racism, they could go to court and maybe win.

But in the end they should be fired for having a viral video of them fucking off at work with a hate symbol involved.

Also it should be understood that symbolism is real, and for African Americans in particular a NOOSE has nothing but very negative connotations. No one should be fucking around with nooses, fake or real, if they arent filming a movie or aren't a literal hangman. Theres just no need.

The swastika is an ancient symbol but its universally accepted as wrong to display due to negative historical connotations. It really should be the same for a noose. It isnt necessary to display a noose in any normal day to day business. So don't do it!

In the end it seems to me that it was a distasteful inside joke between coworkers with not enough context, not intentionally racist. By all means it could have been, im just saying there's no proof of their intention other than role-playing a typical, non lynch mob hanging. Those idiots are screwed because i doubt most people are going to look at it logically.

Eh, I'd be surprised if that much dough cost more than a dollar or so to make. Unless you're getting into rich doughs made with butter and eggs (which fast food doughs generally are not because shortening and soy lecithin are so much cheaper), dough is really very cheap. Most of the cost of making bread on-site is in the labour and space requirements, since shaping loaves manually can take a while and whatever space you use for proofing will be occupied for a while (anywhere from half an hour to 24+, depending on what kind of fermentation you're going for).

It's more about the attitude than the dough they were caught wasting. Just because something is cheap doesn't mean you should be wasting it playing inappropriate games at work. I wouldn't want my fast food workers having a pickle throwing fight either.

This is true, I'm just saying that the wasted food is actually a pretty trivial cost and most of the objection here is going to be on the grounds of poor behaviour/PR.

Wasn't there a shortage of flour and yeast not too long ago because everyone was making bread at home? I wouldn't doubt that the price on both commodities increased afterwards, which Jimmy Johns had to swallow as a business expense, on top of any increase in the price of eggs, milk, etc. Kids may do stupid things but that action was a sign of contempt and disrespect toward the company that gives them a paycheck. What they were doing was 'biting the hand that feeds them', which is always a no-no, whether a kid or an adult.

They did, and flour's still rather expensive even buying wholesale, but saying that's a dollar worth of ingredients was a pretty generous estimate (especially with the sort of deals chains get on their ingredient costs due to the massive volumes they order them in). I'd be surprised if that dough has any milk or eggs in it, or if it does, it's powdered versions of each (which are also pretty cheap).

Yeah, they're still wasting company resources and that's generally something to discourage, but even at minimum wage, I can guarantee the wasted man-hours involved in making the noose and filming it were a greater loss than the dough itself. Bread - especially fast food bread - is really cheap.
