You are greatly overestimating how tech savvy the average user is. If it isn't in the app store they won't use it. Not to mention for iPhone users they can't sideload it anyway.

Nice move, but there are lots of other apps that should be banned. For example, India lists more than 50 Chinese apps and banned all those apps that can be threat for the citizens of their country.

i feel you on those concerns -- just look at how the feds have abused the Patriot Act to basically spy on anyone for any reason. but i do think TT is a steamy pile of garbage that should not be used by anyone.

for me to be totally comfortable with something like this i think the gov't needs to be very transparent on why they are banning the app. i'd like to see technical demonstrations / explanations of why the app is bad or dangerous and those should be published for the public to see.

Easy. Have big tech remove it from the app stores and forbid their U.S. subsidiaries from keeping their servers open here, unless they want to get hit with massive fines. The Chinese understand only $$$. Bigger question: will this be fought out in the WTO, or be viewed as a sovereign matter. India already banned it and a bunch of other Chinese crap, and nothing has seemingly happened to them.

And? So many U.S companies rely on China for manufacturing goods and cheap exports. If you want U.S. to lose some sort of economic war, cut it's ties to China trade then we are completely fucked. Even if we are at war (we're not) we should be aiming to be better allies not going be enemies that would be stupid.
