The Penguin Guide to Modern China, and the Penguin Guide to Canadian History. I think I'm getting the names right, and if not, it's obvious what the books are about. When it comes to China, I actually know the modern history reasonably well, but I feel there's more I could learn. As for Canada, I only know a little. Both books are chunky, at least 600 pages each, which is good. I like decent time sinks. I must confess, Penguin has a great range of history books.

on what basis did you choose those books? when i wanted to start learning more about history i chose the penguin history of the world. i have dreamed of visting the yukon since i was a small boy, and sometimes have dreams about the ontario-michigan border. (most rare anxiety i have felt in the last several years relates to the run-up to crossing the border. the guards make it stressful.) are you reading about canada in order to balance out some your fascination for the states?
