Apparently 5 seasons is the perfect cutoff point because people lose interest beyond that point, so they have a policy of making shorter shows to hold people's attentions. Doesn't matter if the creators have more stories to tell, like with Bojack Horseman. Also, season four is definitely going to be the last season of Stranger Things. --- There are no pan-asian supermarkets down in hell, so you can't buy Golden Boy peanuts. As shitty as I find most Netflix original series to be, they do a really good job making interesting competition shows and find a good balance between giving you good background and insight into the individuals' lives and the action in the show itself. After the seventh season, contract renewals happen and shows become much more expensive. If the show is doing well that's not a big deal and they'll pay everyone. If it isn't they often get canceled at this point. Netflix structures their contracts around three seasons. Those contracts typically pay out more per season than a seven season contract and offer a nice bit of flexibility for the actors who might not want to potentially lock themselves into seven years of their career and get into a Fresh Off the Boat situation, where they are turning down better deals because of a TV contract. This lets Netflix get some big names on their shows. The other big factor, and why Netflix rarely renews shows after the initial contract runs out, is the nature of subscribership. Essentially more people sign up or renew for new shows. By season three you might be keeping around some of your initial people who signed up for the show, but you aren't getting any major new sign-ups or resubscribers for the third season of a show, much less four or five. You'll notice the few shows that make it much past season 3 are either smash hits, extremely cheap, or critical darlings. Because I really want more but all I can find is a thousand and one articles that take a statement made September last year about having a concrete document for season 2 if they got renewed and turning that into a confirmation. But they seemed to go really hard with this planned end in the recent years without telling the showrunners. I'm still salty about Santa Clarita Diet ending on a cliffhanger. Being so hard set on this mindset really turns people off when you see a show you loved cancelled.
