DAY 22.1: The Empty Man
In Theaters

Okay, so I don't know whether or not I watched something brilliant or something that is complete bullshit.

The Empty Man is about a former undercover cop who investigates the disappearance of a girl after her and her friends play a game to summon The Empty Man.

This barely covers like 5% of this movie. You may be thinking "Oh, hahaha it's like The Bye Bye Man. Just some dumbass boogeyman right?" Surprise mother fuckers, it isn't that at all. And that's certainly what I was expecting.

This director has made documentaries on Lynch and Cronenberg, and you can tell with this movie. It's... like I don't even know what to say here.

The opening of this movie has nothing to do with anything I typed in that summary, for instance. But the opening of this movie? It's actually legitimately awesome. And when I say opening, I mean 15 minutes until you see "THE EMPTY MAN" appear on the screen.

From there, we get a boogeyman deal with a bunch of idiot teenagers. And some of the stuff here is really good. But from there? It's a mystery thriller. Straight up, we're doing investigations with some creepy (and somehow very effective) horror stuff thrown in. I won't get too much into it, but there's stuff in this movie that works so extremely well, but for the most part there's a lot of talking. Which is alright, because our protagonist played by James Badge Dale is pretty great.

But I was ready to go "This is pretty good, I guess." And then the ending of this fucking movie. I am just like floored. As I watched it play out, I just didn't know if I was seeing what I thought I was seeing, or if this ending is such bullshit, or if this ending is just such incredible nonsense. And yet I'm still like "I think this is actually something amazing." I DON'T KNOW. I have very confusing feelings.

If you're wondering why you didn't hear about this movie until two weeks before it came out, this is why. They don't know how to market this thing. It's not the boogeyman movie they're promoting it as, and I have no idea how you market this. If this had more exciting stuff going on in the middle, I would feel alright giving it a must watch score. But for now, I think... I think... 8/10? I think?

Oh, this movie is also 2h17m long. So... consider that as well. Because there's a lot to soak in with this movie. I just know I won't forget this movie for a very long time. Because my mind was blown so much I can't even come to terms with this movie.

BONUS: Movie Theater Review
In Movie Theaters

I honestly felt safe going into the theaters. More safe that going into the grocery store or anything. Standard procedure is masks on at all times unless eating in the auditorium. You have to pick your seat and they block out the seats to your left and right by 2 seats, giving you six feet between anyone else. They did a big disclaimer at the start of the movie that they do this extensive cleaning with an elaborate procedure.

I felt alright going there. There were 4 people in the theaters with me (pick a good time to go too tbh). So yeah. I theater experience was pretty good and I didn't feel like I was in any more danger of getting Covid than most other places. Overall, I just feel bad for the movie industry because it's a rough time for them now. But it feels like they're doing everything they can to make it safe for people to go to the theaters, which I appreciate.

DAY 22.2: The Dinner Party
On Amazon Prime

This movie sucked until it became stupidly corny and then over the top bad but funny.

The Dinner Party is about a couple that goes to a dinner party and then after an hour something happens and it becomes deadly.

This movie goes for almost an hour with just talking and nothing else and fuck I wanted it to end. It's a 2 hour movie too, which makes it worse. And the talking is just a bunch of bad actors trying to do pseudo-deep bullshit.

When it gets going, it's actually a little bit compelling and I'm confused why they couldn't trim out at least a half an hour from this movie in the first half. There's a 5 minute scene of one of them fucking naked just flirting with someone and it's like "You could get this across without having to dedicate 5 minutes and a gratuitous nude scene to it. Come on."

But it devolves so much into campy stupidity that you can't help but laugh, but even when it's like that the scenes are still played out too long. If you just cut the scenes down instead of having everyone talk in circles for entirely too long, you could have gotten this down to a reasonable runtime. Then the action scenes come which are just absolutely hilarious and the best part of this film. This movie was a drag, but at least it entertained at parts.

Don't recommend. It's trash, but at least it could be entertaining trash sometimes.

I'm glad! I think. Your mileage may vary, especially based on your patience. I wish it had a more exciting middle, but there's a lot of good here and I think it's carried by the ending.

It certainly feels disjointed a bit, and I can understand why they felt like they didn't know how to market this movie, because... If you market it as a mystery thriller, you miss out on showing enough horror elements. But the more I think on it, the more I think I actually really like the ending and think it really turns this movie into something special.

It's an imperfect movie, but when you're at the ending it all feels worth it.

DAY 23: Aliens
On HBO Max

So I'll start by saying that I'm one of the folks who like Aliens more than Alien.

Aliens picks up where Alien left off, where Ripley joins space marines on a battle to fight the xenomorph threat, this time they're up against an entire hive of them!

Let me say that someone mentioned to me that if you put Alien and Aliens together, you have the perfect movie. And I agree with that a great deal. Aliens is the perfect continuation of this story, I think, and I don't think it's nearly as strong without the first movie.

I'll mention again that Ripley is an incredible strong female protagonist and needs to get more credit. She's so awesome in this movie. And just seeing her evolve through both movies is really excellent and it feels very fulfilling.

This movie is influential in so many ways, and it's pretty revolutionary for its time. They still manage to be able to bring a sense of dread out of the xenomorphs despite there being so many more and the humans actually being able to fight back now. Because they're still at a huge disadvantage. The movie takes its time selling you on the other characters too, and I just love that.

I don't know how much I need to tell you guys about this movie. The action is great, the horror is great, the effects are great, the plot is great, the characters are great, the aliens are great, there is so much innovation.

Aliens is one of the best horror movies. Even if you can consider it an action movie. It doesn't forget its horror roots at all. And I think this is easily the best of the Alien movies. I give it a 10/10. Absolutely watch if you somehow haven't yet.

DAY 23.2: Terrified
On Shudder

I have found a Spanish horror movie to add another culture's horror to my list! And this movie is awesome and yet another Shudder Original.

Terrified is about a small neighborhood undergoing supernatural activity turning violent. A group of supernatural researchers then see if they can find the source of the activity.

Like I said, this movie is awesome. Shudder hits again with their exclusives! This movie has so many creative and terrifying scares in it. It's legitimately really, really good.

I was surprised at how good it was, honestly. Nothing felt predictable. There is genuine creepiness all around, and it's literally just a movie with activity in three different homes with paranormal spookies. But damn, these spookies have a lot put into them. They're distinctly scary in their own ways, and they kind of merge.

When things begin to devolve, they become more and more twisted. You end up just like wtf get me out. And it leads to a satisfying end, along with a solid ending scene.

I highly recommend this movie. I loved how everything played together and it had a very different feel by just being a different culture's horror film. It's not quite a must watch, but I recommend it very highly!

DAY 23.3: Evil Eye
On Amazon Prime

So I am 100% convinced that Evil Eye was originally a Lifetime movie, but then they had second thoughts because it gets kind of supernatural at the end and handed it off to Blumhouse.

Evil Eye is about an Indian girl whose overbearing mother wants her to find a man. She eventually does, but her mother thinks he reminds her too much of her own abusive ex.

This is one of the Welcome to Blumhouse movies they threw on Amazon Prime. The story behind them is that they didn't know what else to do with them, so they decided to throw them all under this banner.

That said, this movie wasn't great. My girlfriend was interested because it was basically an all-Indian production about Indian culture, and she's Indian. She was also very disappointed.

Like I mentioned, this plays like a Lifetime movie. You know, with the poor plot, overacting, some scary domestic situation which is unrealistic, the acting ends up being really corny, and the situation just feels like it's targeted for the worried mother demographic. You guys know what I mean. You've all probably seen one.

But it's honestly not terribly compelling. Most of the movie is the mother freaking out at her daughter on the phone while her relationship moves way too fast. Like I said, it becomes supernatural towards the end, but not in any way you expect it to be. It's probably in the most simple way possible.

It's mostly boring without anything going on and becomes vaguely scary, but not really, at a couple points. But it's a freaking Lifetime movie.

Don't recommend.

DAY 24: Bad Hair
On Hulu

This movie came out a couple days ago and it's actually really a really strong African American horror movie.

Bad Hair is about a girl in the 80's who works at a music video company and after a bad hair accident, she is afraid to do anything nice with her hair. So her new boss tells her to get a new hair weave if she wants to go places in the company. But she soon discovers her new weave is cursed!

You're probably thinking that this premise sounds ridiculous, and it is. This comes across as a more horror with comedy elements thrown in. For the most part, the horror in this movie is on point. Absolutely chilling visuals.

It's a campy story at times, but I never felt the pacing was ever off. It was a really interesting look at a sort of era and profession. It makes for a compelling story, even if it gets absurd at times.

I never felt bored, it was fun, and I think it's definitely worth a watch.

DAY 25: The Lighthouse
On Amazon Prime

Man, this movie is a trip. I wouldn't expect anything less from the director of The Witch.

The Lighthouse follows a pair of men who take care of a lighthouse. The younger of the men begins to become more and more frustrated with the job until he ultimately begins to lose his mind.

This film is in black and white, white honestly just adds to the gritty, rough nature of the movie and helps add to the visuals. It starts Robert Pattinson and Willem DeFoe who absolutely kill it.

I loved watching their back and forths, especially with DeFoe's perfect, rugged accent. It really is a showcase for both of these men.

This plot is rather straight forward, but the way it's presented is totally excellent. The story involves DeFoe's simple order to not violate a superstitious warning for seafarers, and Pattinson does so and the plot just completely unravels from there. It really does a masterful job following Pattinson's character as a mad man, and showing us that we don't know what to trust exactly.

The visuals are astounding for a black and white film. When the movie is on point, it gives you the right amount of insanity, the right amount of violence, or the right amount of subtlety. I mean, hell. For a pair of men with a sailor's mouth, they just present such a compelling narrative that will keep you on edge until the end.

It's really excellent and I wish I had seen it last year but my life was too hectic at the time! But I finally got to it now! I highly recommend this film. It feels really gritty and it's just perfectly crafted for a unique look at a pair of rough around the edges lighthouse operators.

DAY 25.1: Ju-On: The Grudge
On Amazon Prime

So I had a lot of complaints about the American version of this movie. It was interesting seeing the original Japanese version instead.

Enter the house. You die. Meowing ghost. Croaking. Etc.

I gave a proper summary of the American version and it's more or less the same. A lot of this will also be a comparison to the American version.

I'll start by saying the Japanese version is better. It just is. I had a big complaint about the sister part in the US version seeming irrelevant but it makes a lot more sense here. It also doesn't follow ace detective Sarah Michelle Gellar, so that helps.

The US takes a lot of identical scares for the Japanese version, and it shows. I think that the one new scare in the US version I really liked was actually absent from this movie (fans who have seen both probably know what I'm talking about).

This film seems a lot more concise with it's storytelling. It doesn't meander around. It gets right to it and barely even gives you background. Again, it's meant to just get in there and unsettle and scare you and get out. It does a great job of that.

The scares feel more effective in the Japanese version as well, simply by virtue of knowing how to subtly scare or unsettle you and the narrative being concise enough it doesn't let you have much time to breathe. I really just love the way this story goes down and it doesn't feel, and you guys probably know what I'm talking about, not Americanized so hard.

I recommend people watch the original Ju-On. I think it's rather outstanding at what it does and it understood how to do it effectively.

DAY 25.3: Prom Night (1980)
On Peacock

So I remember watching the remake which I thought was incredibly uninspired. Fortunately, I can see why people consider this a cult classic.

Prom Night is about a group of high school kids who accidentally cause the death of one of their friends as children. It comes back against them when someone who witnessed this is out to kill everyone involved, on prom night!

So it's immediately obvious why this movie was so much more successful than the remake. It's fun. It's not great. It's just fun. The remake is just a depressing dramatic mess that probably failed to relate to prom goers.

What makes this movie fun is that they have disco hits from that time and even big sequences of people having fun at prom, along with the drama in the background to keep the plot going. But if you were in high school at the time this movie came out, I can see why you wanted to watch it. "Woah! Fun prom movie! AND THERE'S A KILLER!?" And there's a ton of dumb stuff involved that ends up just making it an enjoyable ride.

It's just not necessarily super interesting. I'm an adult though and I don't care about prom, but I can see with complete understanding why it caught on with so many people. If you're interested in watching an early 80's prom movie, then go ahead and watch this. Otherwise, it's a purely skippable slasher movie.

Recommend: Ready Or Not
On HBO Max

So I worked out what movies I'll be watching with my girlfriend for October and unfortunately there's only two movies left--one which is on my favorite movies of all time, and another which is considered a foreign classic. I do want to save this movie for her on a rewatch, because this movie is fucking awesome.

Fellas, go out of your way to watch Ready Or Not. It's a horror comedy about a girl who marries into a family that plays a game where, if she wins, she gets accepted into the family and the fortune! If she loses, she dies an awful death. And the game...? Hide and Seek.

Yes, Hide and Seek with deadly stakes in a giant mansion. This movie is gripping while also managing to be hilarious. It flew under the radar a bit, but I am determined to make sure it won't be completely overlooked. The comedy in the movie is outstanding. The ending is probably one of the best endings to a movie I've ever witnessed. This movie has horror, it has tenseness, and it has some of the best dark comedy you'll ever watch and I promise you that.

Watch Ready Or Not. You will NOT be disappointed. I promise.

Yeah, Jamie Lee Curtis is always excellent at acting, frankly. Horror aside, she can do drama, she can do scream queen, she can do comedy so freaking well. Jamie Lee Curtis is truly excellent.

But yeah, it was a weird movie that definitely feels like a relic of its time. And the killer was pretty obvious to me too. It's just... you know, it's not a movie made for me at all. lol And I think that's alright too.

DAY 25.4: Halloween (1978)
On AMC

I lost half my post here so bear with me.

I think the original Halloween is the best slasher movie created.

Halloween is about a man who killed his sister as a child breaking out of an institution many years later to start a killing spree.

The narrative of this movie is so tightly wound. Probably the most effective part about it is that it just builds up everything and lets you take in Michael Myers's general creepiness from stalking people, to hearing Loomis talk about him, to just enjoying our characters as we watch Michael Myers prepare for his killing spree.

I think a big reason that this movie is so much better than most others is that each kill is memorable. They take their time with it and let you just absorb each death of the characters and making them stand out as something brutal. It's something you don't see in a lot of slashers.

And Michael Myers himself is just such a good villain. He's silent, but he has so much mystery around him as an unstoppable monster in the disguise of a human. He's just a dude with a regular mask and a knife. He doesn't carry a machete or wear a hockey mask or anything. He's just a monster of a man. And he's not stupid. He may be mute, he may be underdeveloped, but in this movie he is smart and calculated. He knows exactly what he will do. He takes his time, and he plans his kills ahead of time and even calculates hiding them in order to terrify his prime victim: Laurie Strode. Michael Myers can't speak, but you know what he's thinking. You know what goes on in his head. And you know what goes on in his head is terrible.

This also has the most memorable music of maybe any horror movie of all time. Each of the songs are memorable. The main theme is great, obviously, but the others stand out too. And all of the sound cues are outstanding as well. They add to the feel of an already chilling movie by giving you that much more reason to feel tense as the music is unrelenting and ramps up at all the right moments.

The other characters in the film are strong too, specifically Laurie Strode and Dr. Loomis. Laurie, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, just does a great job when things get real just screaming and freaking out and getting you so much more involved in her story. And Dr. Loomis begins in this movie being a stern, yet dire doctor who is trying to reel in his patient. (I do feel Loomis is Flanderized as the series goes on, but that's another discussion).

There's very little to say that Halloween doesn't do an amazing job at. I think it checks every box and I love re-watching this movie. I've done it every few years now. I love Halloween. If you somehow haven't watched it, do yourself a favor and watch it now.

I've never really understood the excessive love that Halloween got. To me personally, I thought Black Christmas did everything better for the genre, and 4 years earlier.

Now that you mention it, I've wanted to watch the original Black Christmas for a while now. I looked up how to watch it and it claims it's free on Tubi and YouTube, so I may actually go out of my way to watch it now in the next week!

That said, I think I explained why I think Halloween such an effective film. I think the loads of praise it gets is at the very least warranted, because it does pretty much everything extremely well.

In any case, I'm going to watch The Monster now!

DAY 25.4: The Monster
On Netflix

This is a movie by the director of The Strangers, and a movie I wanted to see for a while now.

The Monster is about an alcoholic mother and her daughter who hits a wolf in the middle of the road in the woods, and soon they realize there's a monster looking to kill both of them if they get out of their car.

Let me start by saying this feels like it's from the director from the Strangers simply from... an exploring the humanity of the very flawed characters perspective. This movie is about the mother, played by Zoe Kazan, being an alcoholic and abusive towards her daughter. Normally this should be deplorable, but the script and acting from Zoe Kazan make it so you see the inner workings of their relationship, and while the mother is incredibly flawed, deep down she cares deeply for her daughter. And it takes a situation this extreme for her to show the depths of how much she cares and what lengths she'll go to protect her.

It is legitimately a powerful story and I loved watching every bit of it as the story plays out with a mixture of present day terror and flashbacks.

The story is told on one road for the majority of the film. Just a broken down car and then a few other developments. But it's told in such a way they make it work. And the monster itself is played as completely terrifying. They do such a good job with it, even if the effects feel a little dated at times. It seems like they went with the Alien method of creating the creature.

It's an A24 film, so you know there's bound to be some quality there. And I thoroughly enjoyed this film and what it had to offer that was far more than just a survive x threat with mother and child(ren). It had a compelling story about them, and when horror is mixed with a story about people dealing with their issues, I feel a lot of times those are some of the best stories.

Big recommend for The Monster here.

I think my favorite scene in Halloween is the part where the gutter falls, Loomis draws a gun on it and then gets an incredibly silly look on his face. "You must think me a very sinister doctor. *long pause* I have a permit for this"

Man, Loomis was tons of fun until he was a screaming lunatic.

Also, I am now watching The Curse at Downer's Grove.

DAY 26: The Curse of Downer's Grove
On Hulu

This is written by the same guy who wrote American Psycho and I'm convinced the book has to be at least a little bit better than this movie.

The movie follows a girl in Downer's Grove who believes she may be the next to die in a curse that a senior dies right before graduation each yeah.

It's a shitty movie with some bad acting (mostly due to the script) and just... not very convincing characters. Nothing feels natural or real, nothing is compelling, and it's just a completely depressing story that I don't understand what the appeal was supposed to be. It's an interesting idea in concept, but they just... screw it up by making it not interesting. I felt nothing about this entire story or the characters in it.

It's not completely terrible, but it is clearly low budget. It's just a completely unremarkable, messy film. Not worth watching.

Movie #26, VHS. I like you!

This is one of those movies that's hit or miss, but when it hits it's pretty damn creepy

Also wow, I had no clue Siren was a spinoff of VHS. Pretty sure I've scrolled past it repeatedly on my movie hunt and kept going
