Of the ones I've seen: Brotherhood > Haikyu >> MHA > HxH, but they're all at least good.

Evangelion, HxH, and Brotherhood all in my Top 10 with Evangelion at #1. MHA is pretty good. Death Note might be my least favorite anime. I voted Evangelion but honestly I doubt you'd like it but I want to hope I'm wrong somehow. I think you'd like Brotherhood the most of FMA:B/HxH/MHA but I also think you'd probably enjoy them all though I add the caveat that HxH takes a bit to get going (but once it does...) Oh man these are some good anime. Haven't seen Barakamon but I've seen all the others
Of those I think you'd like Haikyu, Spice and Wolf, or possibly MHA the most. Haikyu and MHA are rather standard shounen stuff but executed really well--great characters and tons of feel-good moments. MHA has also got some pretty well explored themes on what different people think heroes are and what their motivations are that I think you might be into. You also might like My Love Story also, but though I've technically seen it I'm probably the wrong person to ask about that show as I just couldn't get invested in it. You also can't really go wrong with FMA:B imo. It doesn't strike me as something that would appeal to you in particular, but I think most people would enjoy it and it's the #1 anime on MAL for a reason. Hunter x Hunter is a weird case. I really like it but I do tend to think it's a bit overhyped. Also I can't remember what they were, but I remember that several comments you've made on other shows have specifically made me think "Leon might not like HxH". My personal ranking: MHA > FMAB > Death Note > Spice and Wolf > Haikyu > HxH > NGE >>> No Game No Life >>>>>> My Love Story --- I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways. ... I'm willing to put myself out there and maybe watch something I wouldn't like just to mix it up. I don't have any hopes I'd like Death Note in particular, but at least it's short!

I think youd be fine with a villain protagonist if he were treated like an actual villain. Death Note is not really a morally grey show. I mean it poses some questions but the text itself has a clear answer.
The drivers ed episode is a noncanonical episode removed from Kai. It removes like 50% of the runtime of DBZ which is notorious for its pacing. It does mean everyone's favorite one-off episode is gone, but it's not like dbz itself isn't readily available for you to pick out some of the gems. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

If you're in the mood for a thriller show like Death Note then I will throw out a surprise recommendation for The Promised Neverland instead.

Kai is a vast improvement of DBZ, yeah. It'd be better if it sped up the pacing even more, but it's mostly just making DBZ better. I'm sure there's a way to watch just the Driving School episode of DBZ later if you really want to.
And yeah, Death Note doesn't really present its protagonist as a good guy. The things he does are mostly understandable (he's well-developed) and you can see the justifications...but the story certainly treats him as the villain. The fanservice elements of NGNL seem like something you might not be into, but they weren't a negative for me for the most part. --- All the stars in the sky are waiting for you. ... There is definitely a lot of variation in how good different parts of Hunter x Hunter are. I did quite like the first arc but I wouldn't say it's one of the ones driving why I like the series as much as I do. (On the other side of the coin, it definitely isn't one of the bad arcs though imo)
