Personally I probably have to go with either Rescue Rangers or the X-Men animated series. The Simpsons is also super iconic, but I dont know if I would consider it to be the best. Also want to give an honorable mention to Dexters Lab and theres probably a ton of other good ones Im forgetting.

I vote the original pokemon english OP for most memorable. I feel like best is going to be down a lot to musical taste but I'd certainly put anime in the lead here since they use actual songs meant to sound good on their own. No idea what my favorite would be. I feel like nostalgia really clouds my view cause stuff like tank and cruel angel's thesis comes to mind. Theres so many I like though that I can't choose a best very easily. Most of my favorites are ending themes though.

X-Men and Pokemon (1st theme), and maybe Power Rangers are some of the best.
Assuming we're only talking about U.S. cartoons and English themes made for anime. If it's anything animated, then probably dozens of anime Japanese themes are at the top alongside X-Men.

For a more obscure cartoon w/ an excellent opening, Arthur and the Knights of Justice.

I'd probably rank Ducktales above Rescue Rangers from that era.

A lot of my "best themes ever" are all from 80s cartoons, though I acknowledge a lot of that is because I have nostalgia for them. And because I like 80s music in general.

I'm not sure I'd say that's even the best Speed Racer theme, let alone all that great overall.

Hell, when it comes to racing in general, I'd go with this long before that one:

Any anime has a better opening than any western TV show.

Anime tends to gain points because they deliberately pander to whatever style of music is popular when it's first released, and go full-on radio single airplay with it.

But then anime loses a LOT of points because most intros have literally nothing to do with the actual series they're the opening them to, and include tons of batshit lyrics and gratuitous English (and they have a tendency to age really poorly).

As an example, watch this and tell me what the anime is about, based solely on the music (and without knowing what it really is in advance):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK9ENtwwtRk

Hell, with that particular one, you can watch the literal intro and STILL have no fucking idea what the show is about:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOM29mScBzU

Western shows usually at least have the virtue of helping people who've never seen the show before understand what the hell they're watching.

I don't feel like this is a bad thing. It's to get you in the mood for the show, not inform you of what the show is about.

Also come on ikkitousen is garbage through and through. A lot of OPs (with the video) will give you some idea either about what the characters are like or what the show is about.

IME, it's mostly just J-Pop, unless the genre of music is more suitable for the anime in question (like w/ Initial D, Cowboy Bebop, etc...)... Some might be like that, but...not that often.

But then anime loses a LOT of points because most intros have literally nothing to do with the actual series they're the opening them to, and include tons of batshit lyrics and gratuitous English (and they have a tendency to age really poorly).
Not sure why an intro has to explain what the show is about as long as the show itself does a good job of that. But even if you think so, that's a wildly broad and sweeping claim. I could spam this topic w/ examples of intros that do fit the anime if I had to...
The weird random English does happen but again far from universal like you imply.

As an example, watch this and tell me what the anime is about, based solely on the music (and without knowing what it really is in advance):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK9ENtwwtRk
Well, I do know it in advance, so...
And Drivin' Through the Night is great, I imagine it would've been used on Initial D instead if it had been around longer.

Depends entirely on the show. Especially old Super Robot shows have songs about the main robot, listing of its attacks. Many shows have lyrics completely unrelated, but still have music that really sets and fits the tone.

One that really set the tone well, are fully in English and even fit somewhat lyrically, are the openings to the old LoGH/Ginei-Den series.
