Sure, even I would call this a determined effort to avoid sustained disbelief, but the Spiderverse is one of few fictional settings to acknowledge, at least in the short term, the economic ramifications of mad science. Seriously, how many of major the rogues' gallery aren't scientists, businessmen, or desperate to make a buck? He originally on the drawing board had natural webs. By the time it made it to the first published issue of the comic it was changed due to issues with the comic rating system of the time.
