It's established in S1 that Titans absorb energy from sunlight, so they're generally more passive and immobile at night. I assumed they never did night missions because Titans aren't completely immobile and it would be harder to see them in the dark.

But Armin just suggested a night mission and Hange reacted like he'd invented a photon torpedo right there in the horse cart.

Thats the thing about ____. Common sense shit is 10000% not common. And characters who should know better are consistently stupid for the sake of the plot.

tbh, its more just laziness. You dont have to be that smart to think about possibilities, but too many just think of a solution and dont explain well why it hasnt been done before.

I remember reading somewhere (I think it was either Stephen King or GRRM) who said the key to writing smart characters is that if it takes you three weeks to come up with a solution to an issue, the character will do the same thing in a day.
