Is there a term for when someone will redefine an argument, by either saying what it's "really" about or redefining a definition and then proceeding to make an argument from there? It's not quite goalpost moving but close.
You'll see it all the time in Tucker Carlton stuff or Glenn Beck. They'll tell you that Starbucks not saying Merry Christmas is "really" an assault on morality, etc. Carlton just had a thing on how canceling Dr. Seuss is really trying to cancel golden era morals or something. He essentially redefines terms until they lose any original meaning instead of letting an argument stand on it's own. It seems to be a big way to spread propaganda and I was wondering if it had a name. --- PSN: Jiek ... Copied to Clipboard!

Not strawman. It's straight up redefining the argument.

I don't think there's a term for it, because throwing out a potential point isn't really anything at all
fussing around which and what words - just answer the damn point lol costs you nothing to do so considering someone in those types of arguments is apparently so invested that to me it feels like they should be able to school even ignoramuses playing around with such incredible ease that it just shuts them down edit: pfft, I guess there IS a word for it --- ... I think what you're describing and what you're giving an example of are different things.
Saying that someone is doing X as a broader campaign of Y isn't "redefining the argument" and is not bad in a vacuum. If you have a good argument for Y is bad, then it's a stronger argument then attacking X (a specific instance of Y). --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
