There was a diorama in G2-3 where Ryunosuke quips that Van Zieks was too embarrassed to queue up for a ticket.

they've referenced this story a couple of times already, but Holmes's deduction is based off of the plot of "A Scandal in Bohemia" and Holmes confirms that the boy from G2-3 is his son

(also they should've just named the assassin Irene Adler imhotbqh)

"Sometimes a man needs to point his finger first and think later"

heck yes (although it feels like Ryunosuke bluffs at a lower rate than Phoenix)

also while G2-3 probably has the highest quality Dance of Deduction overall, this one here is just comedy gold

I'm normally not a purist about these sorts of things (I've had no issues with Takumi taking liberties with the characterizations and stories thus far), but I'm not sure how I feel about Yujin Mikotoba being Holmes's "real" partner all along. It's such a bizarre twist that I don't know how you could have ever seen it coming. I guess I should give Takumi credit for completely screwing with the player's expectations here for that reason, but still, it's almost blasphemous in a way...!

From what I've seen from people that did "guess it", it's mainly a combination of Mikotoba looking a lot like the traditional Watson in his British outfit and the idea that it'd be amazing if Mikotoba was Iris's father though those were long shots and not something they actually truly believed until it happened.

Another thing I'm not sure of is the decision to make the second trial day its own entire episode. It kind of messes up the concept of calling each one a "case" when it's still the same case between G2-4 and G2-5, and I've been calling them "cases" for too long to switch to "episodes" now just because of this one exception!

I mean, I guess DD kind of did it with 5-5, which is a direct continuation of 5-4 (something the series had never done up to this point either), but at least 5-4 ended with a guilty verdict and 5-5 technically deals with an entirely different case. This would be more like if they made the last trial day of 1-5 its own episode simply because it deals entirely with SL-9 or something.

I mean, did you really think they'd kill off Watson in the first case without you even getting a chance to meet him? It honestly should've been more obvious than it was when Yujin showed up at the start of the case looking just like the traditional Watson.

I can't agree that the Mikotoba twist came out of nowhere - the fact that Yujin had the case notes of the Hound of the Baskervilles in his possession in G1-5 should have been a PRETTY BIG clue! I didn't see the twist coming, either, but it made everything make sense to me. I don't think it's particularly sacrilegious either - it's kind of hilarious for them to be like "hey, look, Sherlock Holmes's best pal was actually Japanese!" but like, I don't have a problem with that, it's a fun twist on the Holmes mythology, something that people have been doing for a hundred years.

I mean, yeah, the hints are there, but the game has made a big deal out of Watson being Iris's father, as well as your own personal expectations of who the character should be. Like I said, it's a clever move on Takumi's part.

I dunno, maybe it's just me wishing I had more of an attachment to Mikotoba as a character. He hasn't been super interesting.

I think it's brilliant. It ties into the duology's overall Japan/British tension/xenophobia in a super effective way. It's like you have the assassin exchange on one hand showing how toxic this relationship is (which itself is commentary on British/Japanese imperialism) while on the other you have this extremely healthy friendship and a skillful working relationship.

I guess for Holmes purists it might be a huge left turn. However, I think it was signposted pretty well, which another poster mentioned above.

I think G-25 should exist, but I agree that the way this game does it is weird. I love the idea of the final episode being called "The Resolve of Ryunosuke Naruhodo" but it is so strange that the game doesn't just make a clear distinction between "G2-4 is the Gregson murder case/ G2-5 is the resolution of the Professor case." It kind of does this, but there's weird overlapping structural issues. Bottom line, you should solve the Gregson case, G2-4 should end, and G2-5 should open with the dinner party at Sholmes's place.

Yeah, like I said, if they had split it the way DD did it, I'd be fine with that. I guess they'd have to find a way to hold a trial just for the Professor case somehow, but they could figure that out.

And yes, "The Resolve of Ryunosuke Naruhodo" is a great name for a finale.

Completely agreed. Loved the Mikatoba twist a lot. I was half-convinced Mikatoba was going to be a victim and/or a villain. Him being alive was great. Him being Sholmes's partner is delightful. I also love how there's that cute Takumi touch of Susato being a massive fan of her father's adventures.

G2-4 and G2-5 are split odd, yeah. I think they wanted a bombastic intro to G2-5, but it doesn't lead to a good split case difference between the two cases. I guess the most climactic thing in G2-4 is either Vigil Daley or Mikatoba, huh?

The Mikotoba reveal is the climax of that case. Vigil's role was a bit of a teaser for the finale because they don't run it all the way to the conclusion just yet.

Ryunosuke catching Kazuma's passing remark about Gregson's trunk is really well done here, and you even get a brief red herring of believing Kazuma might be the killer, to boot. But I do like how Kazuma is readily willing to admit anything Ryunosuke is able to prove, which is not conventionally what the prosecution does in this series!

Hmmm...I wonder if I should consider this Mikotoba/Holmes section an investigation day. It's unusual because it's taking place in the middle of the trial day, and there's not actually a "To Be Continued" marker to transition into it.

If I did, I suppose I'd consider the beginning of it to be Mikotoba's first line since that's essentially when he takes over as the viewpoint character.

Loved that part of the trial. Gina's plea and the cross-examination going from Moderato to Allegro after the plea is a GOAT music moment.

is this sailor supposed to be Bif Strogenov or a guy who looks a lot like him (a brother perhaps?)

oh wait, he eventually introduces himself so that answers that for me

(also the GOAT musical transition moment for the series is Dahlia's theme playing over her final testimony in 3-5 and then becoming the Allegro theme in T&T, so great)

It's kind of interesting that Watson is generally presented as "the stupid friend" who is supposed to be slightly less intelligent than the reader, but in GAA, both Naruhodo and Mikotoba serve to keep Holmes in line. It's also a little amusing that Takumi views the protagonist of these games as Watson, and he even basically has that dynamic with Susato, who is presented as the more intelligent of the two, especially when it comes to matters of law.

Although in most AA games, the protagonist is Holmes and the assistant is Watson. This one turns convention on its head a bit in that regard.

One thing I feel like I need to "apologize" for - I complained something like 3 times about the "Reaper" thing being just about to hype the prosecutor. I thought this is their way of hyping him like they did with almost every other prosecutor before "never lost a case", "passed the bar at the age of 13", "youngest one to become a lawyer" etc (not sure I remember how they hyped Blackquill and Nahyuta but I think they did too)
So after finishing the game and seeing how the "Reaper" was not just a important plot device, but perhaps the most important plot device in those two games - I really should have shut up and wait for the games to resolve before complaining about this lol

I disagree. When I first saw his arm, I wondered why he had Sholmes written on it, before realizing that they were numbers.

My original assumption is that he had been told by Jigoku to be on guard for a guy named Sholmes and that name was there to remind him since his English isn't great.

But by the time we got to the combination lock sequence, it was pretty easy to figure out where it was.

Didn't Sholmes say something to the effect of "How do you not know me when you have my name tattooed on your arm?" when he met Tchikin?

So I get that Holmes was on the SS Burya to try to stop Kazuma from reaching London, but what exactly was his plan to prevent it? He sort of, uh, "lucked" into Kazuma "accidentally dying" along the way, but he never explains what he actually intended to do aside from getting Naruhodo to take his place.

he also got lucky that Kazuma smuggled Naruhodo aboard because then what would he have done? would these games have become "The Adventures/Resolve of Satoru Hosonaga?"

and this is the first 3-day trial outside of PW1, right? I don't think there have been any others

Also, are they going to explain why Watson and Gregson were the targets? I guess I would assume it's because they "knew too much," but it's been ten years already. They shouldn't be worried about them talking now, all of a sudden. Plus, Gregson was a part of the Reaper syndicate. I mean, Holmes had talked him into getting out, but only because his name was on that target list. Was it a "test of loyalty" for Japan, perhaps?

I think they say that Stronghart was worried either of them could tank his chances of becoming Attorney General, so he took them out.

I kind of like the rapid pace of this case. It feels like most epic cases are deliberate and plodding, but this one moves from one thing to the next fairly quickly.

Which it actually has an in-game reason for doing so since Holmes is trying to prevent Stronghart from having any reason to dismiss the court.
