IIRC, back in the day the standard build was to put minimum points in for equipment and the rest into vitality

Barbs are very eq dependant and also start off the weakest by far (even compared to a sorc honestly).
They get a bunch of abilities that boost them all at once long term, but it takes awhile to get there and +skills make a big diff because of that as well.

Barb is my least favorite class though and I rarely played one.

If you want melee Pally is the most less squishy initially (and kills everything pretty fast). The bonus from their shields gives you max resists super easy.

Druids do get feral rage/fury though AND can still have decent summons (which work vs everything but Diablo early on). FR + Fury gives great life leach early on while killing everything fast.

Kicksin is very fast and doesn't need Enigma for quick runs. Dragon talon + life tap eq lets you face tank anything, and ony requires points in 1 skill (dragon talon)...letting you pump traps a ton...very fast character as well (bit more squishy though).

Sorc/Amazon are ranged (unless melee sorc) and more squishy but can be fun.

Necromancer is easy mode, but slower then the rest. Invulnerable though with summons even without good EQ and easiest to move into hell difficulty with. Best starting class in my opinion for a new player.

Pally is usually my goto when I start though, high defenses and holy freeze + zeel make everything cake. Zeal also kills stuff super fast, not reliant on summons or anything that you have to wait for. Does things like maggot lair easily and no problem with bosses at all. If you get the gloves that slow enemies by 25% + holy freeze everything is on easy mode even without good eq, but it actually gets a ton from eq as well, making it more rewarding to get good drops (vs Necro who just mainly needs +skills and auras).

Pally and necro both can run with almost all MF eq btw, although necro really needs +skills (well it helps alot) while pally can just say screw it grab a basic dagger with max MF (that dagger that gives +100% mf forget it's name), a shield that adds MF (set piece I think) and MF gear everywhere else.

Holy freeze adds enough damage and Zeal attacks fast enough that you still kill everything with your eyes closed through nighmare with a pure MF setup as a pally.

Necro is kinda like that but +skills help necro a ton, but necro is slower (as you need to wait for your summons to kill stuff usually, even if Corpse explosion speeds things up, and you can get a corpse with a bone skill (so it's not horrid). In general though a zooming Pally with Zeal + HF is significantly faster then a necro (and since you don't need the +skills that much, can have more MF).

Either a pally or necro can easily get through NM into hell though, without any significant EQ.

I'm gonna get it after I beat Tales of Arise, what build is the most beginner friendly? I was a pro in Diablo 3 but I feel like that game is gonna be so different than this one.

Frozen Orb + Firewall sorc is the most beginner friendly imo

Frenzy Barb, Lightning trap assassin, and Summon Necro are good too

Necromancer. Sure, they don't get "natural" speed boosts like some of the other classes, but the most laborious thing they have to do is organize loot while their army burns down the countryside.
