Do people not realize not everyone breastfeeds? And even when breastfeeding, the mom can pump milk and the dad can bottlefeed that pumped milk? Plenty the dad can do to care for the baby

Newborns don't sleep through the night. Having two people alternate feeding shifts is very helpful so you get more than an hour of sleep at a time.

One of the things that shocked me most during my job interview was when they said Id get four weeks of paid paternity leave when my daughter was born (mothers get six weeks, or twelve if it was a C-section)

At my previous job I had two weeks of PTO requested for her birth and it was requested months prior to me leaving, and still wasnt approved when I left because her due date was around the holidays and they might need me because its our busy time

pretty much. Our daughter was the result of six months (and $10,000+) of IUI treatments so that job could fuck off if they were gonna say no to that. They didnt even offer mothers paid leave, they told them to sign up for short term disability which would only pay like 60% of their wages while theyre gone iirc.

Also the new job gave me bereavement leave for the entire time we were in the hospital when she died in the womb last month. Old job wouldve had me use PTO because bereavement didnt cover miscarriages/stillbirths.

I think I made the right choice in leaving lol

I actually agree in this case. Not saying dads cant help but there is a decent sized window before and after birth that women cant work. The man has to be going to work and bringing in income.

If people actually planned babies as they should or paid leave was a thing then I would disagree. Paid leave isnt a thing and most families dont save before having a baby so this is how it is though.

My ex just had a baby a couple months ago and if the baby daddy wasnt paying all bills she would be screwed.

Dads absolutely deserve paternity leave and if you've ever actually talked to somebody with a newborn you'll realize that even just having the dad there to give the mom a break for a couple of hours can do wonders for mental health in those early months when all the baby does is cry and sleep.

If this was pre-internet there could maybe be a debate around the degree to which a person's responsibility as a cabinet member in a pandemic might override the right to paternity leave, but there's nothing stopping him from dialing into meetings from his home. The only thing that's even slightly confusing, and this is basically a minor nitpick, is that the WH probably should have announced that a cabinet member was going on paternity leave in August rather than the media finding out months later that he just hasn't been there. That really just speaks more to the Biden administration's lack of communication with the media, though, and has relatively little to do with this discussion anyway.

Generally, yes. Again, I would argue that if you take a cabinet level position for the president in the middle of a pandemic that a certain degree of privacy has to be sacrificed because of the responsibility you shouldered. This isn't some nine to five employee taking time off from their cubicle job. The White House should probably be communicating when they anticipate disruptions like this because of the current circumstances.

But like you said, what I'm saying above isn't really relevant to this discussion because people are complaining about the leave, not the timing. That would be why I called it a minor nitpick which for some reason you decided to cut out of my quote.

I suppose he also thinks straight adopting couples shouldn't get paternity leave either (they do) since the mother isn't recovering.

It's almost like a having a new child is a big deal and both parents, heaven forbid, will probably wan't to be there for at least the first couple of weeks.
