Playing it on the switch, since I'm a sucker for Nintendo 64 games. Compared to most games from that era, it aged so much better.

But it is kind of funny that many of the Genesis games feel much more modern than the Nintendo 64 games simply because the 16-bit era was so much more refined.

It really is such a fantastic game. I often break out the N64 to revisit it. Ive been considering getting it on Wii U too just for convenience.

Star Fox 64, as well as Ocarina of Time (barring the first-person aiming maybe) aged incredibly well. Graphically, game design, and control-wise they're both still extremely solid experiences.

SF64 and Mario 64 both using deliberately geometric and simplistic art wound up making them hold up better than other games.

Yeah, Star Fox 64 was basically magic. Not sure how they weren't able to replicate the feeling of replaying that game ever again. SF Zero was close but the control scheme was awful and the branching path system wasn't as fleshed out.

It's a great game, one of my favorites of all time. The 3D version is alright, but some of it was changed that screws with my nostalgia but I'm fine with it otherwise.

Star Fox 64 is basically a remake of the SNES version with a lot of added content. It wasn't just a brand new game, but a old game perfected.
I wish it had the acid trip slot machine boss.

16 bit games had some stinkers, too. Check out F-zero, it's basically a game demo. Look how many games are just "menu screen opening over image or video, then gameplay." Usually anything more than that has some serious work behind it.

Yeah, they still look great. They might not be top-tier visuals, but they aren't offensive to the eyes.

Star Fox 64 was one of my favorite games of all time. I replayed it last year and it's still so much fun. It sucks that they haven't been able to make another Star Fox game as great as 64. They keep focusing on the wrong things.

I've said this before, but what might be the biggest feather in SF64's cap is that it might very well have been the first major-release video game where the voice acting was not only good, but actually flowed with and enhanced the game experience. Contemporary games like Resident Evil and Symphony of the Night were infamously 'so bad it's good' with their VA, but SF64 was just plain regular good. And the VA was actually woven into the gameplay, and not just relegated to cutscenes. SF64 might be pound for pound the most quoted game of all time - by that I mean it isn't just one or two standout lines that get quoted, even random innocuous lines get quoted on a regular basis - and there's a good reason for that.

Like a previous poster said, SF64 is essentially taking the blueprint that was the SNES StarFox and refining it to its true potential, and this element is no different. The chatter mechanic with your squadmates didn't fundamentally change, but the simple addition of competent voicework made it exponentially more immersive (for starters, you can just listen to your squadmates instead of taking your eyes off the action to read what they're saying).

If I was going to cite examples to help make my point about how the VA genuinely enhanced the gameplay, Area 6 would be my #1 example.

Possibly a hot take, but Mario Kart 64 on the other hand, I played that game for the first time in years last night and that game aged like garbage. It controls horribly, the prerendered sprites look bad, and the game has very little content.
