There are reports from 2012 submitted by residents where they identified that the supports for the bridge where rusted through. You would have to be an idiot to think that this bridge was fine until today.

This is an example of white privilege, but 'liberals' are once again presenting the problem being that they won't be going to an overcrowded and dangerous prison, rather than the problem being that our prisons are overcrowded and unsafe. The privilege is that white people are given preferential treatment, not that the prisons are safer and less crowded -- those are things that should be a given in society, but they aren't because we've designed them that way and people are conditioned to think that if your life isn't in danger every minute in prison, then it's not really a punishment.

Student debt forgiveness is regressive and sets up bad incentives. There are way better ways for the government to spend money helping people.

The reason you typically can't discharge student loan debt via bankruptcy is that you can't have the benefit of having gone to college taken away from you. It creates a perverse incentive if you can just get a college education for free by abusing bankruptcy.

That said, I don't see any details in the article about the college he went to/the degree he got. Iirc the Obama Department of Education forgave loans for students who went to for-profit colleges with worthless degree programs (basically concluding that the students were victims of fraud). If that's what this is I'm quite sympathetic to the guy and am fine with the debt being discharged. But if he went to a real college and got an actual education that generally was beneficial to other students I don't think he should be getting bailed out here.

Did you read the article? He has epilepsy and the bankruptcy court is satisfied that he is never going to be able to work a regular job. He cannot use his degree.

I'm not worried about big business here, I'm concerned with other people who did not decide to take on $100k in debt. If the lender is the US government I think there are much better ways to spend that money. If private loans could be discharged by bankruptcy, on the other hand, it would become much harder for students to get them which would prevent other people from being able to go to college at all.

I take it you haven't taken out a student loan in the last 12+ years? Nowadays basically no one gets private student loans because the federal government qualifies basically anyone for as much in loans as they want.

Missed that, I just skimmed through looking for info on the college/degree. That seems like a tricky case; I guess it might hinge on whether he should have reasonably known that his epilepsy would prevent him from making use of the degree beforehand? I'd have to think about it more.
