Decided to drop Spotify premium. Same price at Tidal, $9.99 a month.

Just an FYI for anyone looking to change or just try the service for a buckarooni.

So far, so good. Everything I've searched for has been found. I actually like the interface a lot more, though it seems to be a little laggy at times. I'm on Android/Galaxy S10 so YMMV.

Based on like six selections, it made a welcome playlist for me that was very spot on with my taste and introduced a few tracks I haven't heard. I've read that there are complaints of how the music sounds versus Spotify, and from what I understand, Spotify does a better job at mixing them, though. I haven't done any comparing on that. The music sounds fine to me, at least in my car.

Tidal's thing apparently is that they tend to use source files that have less loss (or something, I am not an expert) than Spotify. There's a noticeable difference in quality from what I've listened to.

That being said apparently if you primarily listen via bluetooth headphones there's not really any difference because of bluetooth protocols? Just what the first link I read said. I'm debating switching from Spotify to something else so yeah

That's lame. Guess that's the cost to be the loss (was going to finish with "to a bigger company" but it also fits as is lol).

Yeah, not sure what other service to go at this point. It actually sucks because I've had Spotify premium for years and have a lot of playlists and albums to redo. I'll have to try out my BT headphones to see how it sounds tomorrow.

Abive is a 320 kbps vs lossless test you can do to test your hearing. If you can tell the diff between them in most cases then Tidal is better audio quality than spotify.

I can't tell the difference in majority of cases unless the lossless mix is improved over the 320 kbps version of a song (some songs are like that). So i cant pass the test linked above. Some people can just straight up tell the difference tho im jelly

You need some quality headphones to tell the difference. If you're just outputting the shit through built in monitor speakers you will never hear a difference.

Focal Utopia
Stax sr007mk2
Hd800s
Qdc anole vx
Hd600
Thieaudio monarch
Thieaudio clairvoyance
Qkz vk4
Hd6xx
Hifiman arya
Hifiman sundara

And some others that i think are a bit lower quality in terms of sound:

Wh1000xm1
Bose qc 35

Cant tell diff. Could be because i have tinnitus (since i was 5 years old).

no difference on my ~$1500 headphone system either, not that i was willing to listen to that god awful sample very long, i don't need to.

Tidal is building a brand on snake oil, especially with this MQA stuff which is beyond laughable

if people are interested in audio quality they should worry more about what happens to their signal from the point it is converted to analog and not about this stuff. a high-bitrate properly encoded mp3 is fine.

I can't tell diff in sound between ss amps and dacs that well. only with tube amps vs ss amps since the former adds extra 2nd harmonic distortion iirc and also changes the frequency response for dynamic driver headphones due to their impedance curve afaik.

just using a rme-adi 2 dac for all my headphones except for the two sr-007mk2. i run the sr007 just off an srm 353x and hooked to the rme-adi 2 dac. been thinking about getting a srd-7 + speaker amp but the mixed response from other stax users (some say amps don't matter much for estats as long as it loud the one i use get loud enough for me) makes me have some doubts on that.

stax sound pretty neat and hope you can hear some of them someday. the sr007 and the omega are the Blacksheep of the Stax family though and don't really sound like the rest at all (the only similarities being the upper-midrange boost that seemingly all Stax have) so if you ever do try the sr-007 just know that lol.

So I tried this, and the results were kind of about what I expected. I got 60% correct on 4 of the tracks (Killers, James Blake, Eagles, and Dixie Chicks) but 80% on the Daft Punk track. I felt pretty confident answering the ones from Daft Punk since I'm much more familiar with that genre. I produce electronic music, so I knew what subtleties to be listening for between the two. I probably could have gotten the differences if they threw in a metal track as well

So to the average person who listens to a variety of music, lossless probably isn't that big of a deal. But if you get deep in the weeds of a particular genre, the very fine details will stand out
