The one in Majoras Mask looked completely different though. I always wondered about that.

Yes, I think so. Pretty fair assumption since the text in OoT implies that he would respect that.

Edit: Majora's Mask did seem to start in the Lost Woods and he accidentally fell into Termina, so I think he didn't intend to just wander off with things he was supposed to return. He also goes back to the woods, so it's not a stretch to say he returned it. Oh, and the Hero's Shade doesn't have it in TP.

Edit2: Actually, I wonder if it has the same name in the original Japanese game. I'd have to ask around. The sword's appearance does change significantly between OoT and MM.

I think they just retconned the look for Majora's Mask, or an explanation I've seen is that Link modified it. And if he modified it then he probably decided it's his. Plus you turn it into the gilded sword in MM but I guess it could be debated whether that's canon since it's optional. But this is all pointless nerd talk

i'm of the opinion that majoras mask just happened in his head and wasn't a real thing

The upgrade was probably interest.

I mean isn't the timeline where Link falls into Termina, the one where Ganon comes back and takes over Hyrule, and then Wind Waker happens? So in that timeline, no I don't think he ever returned the sword, because that Link died.

no, but oot is where it branches

you either defeat ganon and save hyrule, or don't.

if you saved it, then majoras mask happens, if you don't then that's the one where wind waker and other timelines branch off

i think, it's been a while since i looked at the timeline thing

Nope. There are three branches from OoT.
  1. Link returns to being a child after defeating Ganon. He tells Zelda preemptively what Ganon's plan is, and Ganon is stopped and sent for execution. Majoras Mask happens. Twilight Princess happens a long, long time later.
  2. After Link returns to his childhood, he doesn't exist in that timeline where he defeated Ganon. Many years pass, Wind Waker happens.
  3. Link and Zelda are defeated by Ganon during OoT. Ganon gets the full Triforce, and wishes for the world to be his. Instead, he's granted the Sacred Realm, which becomes the Dark World. Many years later, A Link to the Past happens, as well as the Oracle games and Link's Awakening. The original NES games happen much later on this same timeline.

Adding this timeline was so fucking stupid and a blatant indication that the timeline was always a lie

They just made one up for the book, there was never a true timeline prior to that

Honestly I agree lmao

I remember when they first announced that, it made less sense than the prevailing fan theory at the time. I'm not sure why Link dying in OoT causes a major canon timeline rift but not in any other game.

was it not obvious that there was no timeline and every zelda game was just a remake of the one before it?

i mean hyrule looks different each and every game

I always thought the timeline stuff was dumb. I think they just made one to build hype for the book cause fans loved theorycrafting about it. I just like to play the games and not think about them too much

In my headcanon, that timeline is any adult timeline you leave behind when you return to the past before defeating Ganon.
