...If you were to go back in time to the early-to-mid 2000's, and show people the game, they would in all likelihood think it's lame because:

  1. It's a 2D fighter, which had pretty much fallen out of favor at the time.
  2. It doesn't have the same degree of movement freedom as the Budokai and Tenkaichi games had; being able to freely fly around the battlefield was kind of a big deal.
  3. The roster is smaller than what the Budokai/Tenkaichi games had, even if the fighters in DBFZ have far more work and attention to detail put into them than the fighters in especially the Budokai games had.
Those were some strange times.

(Actually, I just remembered Super Dragon Ball Z, an even earlier attempt at retreading 2D Fighting that was release on the PS2, and failed to make any kind of impact.)

DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and 3 are better. DB FighterZ is still a solid top 5 entry though

I would contend point 1. I think by 2000-2001 people had kind of gotten over Street Fighter III's oddness and appreciated it for what it is. Plus games like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. SNK 2 were out there.

The Budokai and Tenkaichi series were fun for what they are but they weren't made for competitive gaming, thus they could not compete with the Tekken, Street Fighter, and MvC that owned the Fighting Game genre.

DBFZ was specifically made to be a competitive fighting game so of course it would be considered the best fighting game.

FighterZ is the best game with DB characters. Its very well made with tight gameplay and fun. It isnt a great representation of how DB characters fight or making players feel like they have the power of a DB character, so I dont call it the best DBZ game (best imo is still LoG2).

I legit had a fun time with that game. Granted, it was 1999 and DBZ was still new to me, but I thought it was fun in its simplicity.

Bro in no era would anybody who loves DBZ think DBFZ is "lame" just because it's 2D. It would be received with enormous praise back then for the same reason people praise it now:

It's the closest thing to making the actual anime playable as we've ever gotten.

As someone who has been playing Dragon Ball games since the 90s, I'm going to have to disagree. Back then, I would've loved to have played a MvC style Dragon Ball game.
