The last topic found a good crew interested in multiplayer randomizers, but I'll try to explain all of this well enough that new people can join too. We use the "Archipelago Multiworld Multi-game Randomizer" for this, which connects several different games (listed below) and is always adding new games!

NOTE TO MODS: While some Archipelago games require emulation, they don't provide any of the hardware or information on how to get it. They're very careful not to break any laws so please don't delete this topic just for linking to them, thx

What is a randomizer?: Most games have a linear progression. Item A unlocks Area B, and Area B has Item C to unlock Area D, and so on. In a randomizer, these items are shuffled, so you might find Item C in the first area and can progress to Area D right away. How they work obviously varies from game to game, but most randomizers offer a unique progression path every time you play. Often this turns them into a kind of puzzle to complete. Randomizers use careful logic to ensure you can always beat the game, but it won't always be easy!

How can a randomizer be multiplayer?: With Archipelago, instead of a game's items being shuffled within itself, those items are shuffled between several different games. A Link to the Past player can find and send a Super Metroid player's super missiles, and then the Super Metroid player can find the LTTP player's hookshot, and so on. This turns the randomizer experience into one big puzzle split between ten or twenty or more games, and everyone needs to cooperate to complete it. This can be done with everyone playing at the same time, but Archipelago also allows for asynchronous play (or async), meaning your progress is saved and can be resumed later. Any items you send, other players receive when they start playing, and any items they send you will come when you resume.

How to Participate: If you're interested, that's great! Here's a quick breakdown of the steps you need to take, but feel free to ask any questions.

1: Choose your game from the list above. Remember, whatever you choose will be randomized, so you won't be playing it the usual way. Minecraft, for example, locks various crafting recipes behind checks for you to find or other players to send you. You won't even be able to craft a stone pickaxe until you get Progressive Tools. In Starcraft II, you can't build marines until the unit is sent, etc. With that said, no one should be wary of joining. Archipelago allows forfeits if you're having trouble or not having any fun, so feel free to try it out!

2: Make sure you can get your game to work. https://archipelago.gg/tutorial/ has setup guides for the various games, and most of them require the Archipelago client too. I've played a few games and others here have played many others, so hopefully we can help if you're having trouble. If you run into big technical issues, though, you might need to go to the Archipelago discord server and ask there. There are lots of knowledgeable people there who will be happy to help with any questions!

3: Decide on your game's settings and either let me know or send me a yaml file. A yaml is the name for the file that contains your game's settings. Each game on Archipelago allows various setting changes (found here: https://archipelago.gg/games under the settings link by each game). You can either export the settings on the website and send me the file (preferably through discord) or simply let me know of your changes and, as long as there aren't a whole bunch of them, I can happily create a yaml for you. If this is your first time participating, I'd recommend just going with defaults, but some games have some real quality-of-life stuff available so make sure to take a look!

4: Once I get all the yamls and generate the multiworld, the async begins! At that point all you need to do is join in and start playing. We're pretty laid-back here, so while each async will start on a Saturday where hopefully people can play, it's fine if you can't start right away or if you can't play all the time. Most asyncs we've done have taken between a few days to a week, so there's no rush. This is meant to be fun and low-stress for everyone!

Lastly, we have a discord server that we use during these. It's helpful to talk in real-time sometimes, and it makes uploading yaml files super easy. People read what's posted here too, though, so joining it isn't mandatory. Our next randomizer will be next Saturday, June 11th! Start letting me know yaml settings or sending me yamls. I'll play at least a Hollow Knight, maybe one more.

I also wanted to mention, the Archipelago discord is finally hosting another gigantic async. The last one was 500 worlds or something and took over a month to complete, who knows how big this next one can get! If you're interested, feel free to check it out.

I uploaded a new yaml to discord. Some things to note:
  1. New yaml includes the potential for lttp shop randomization, which seems pretty fine based on some generation + spoiler logs I looked at
  2. I converted it to a multi-world yaml, with one lttp and one v6 world inside the single file (If you want to do this, take a single-world yaml, put --- (three dashes) at the end of it, then past another single-world yaml below it)
  3. For anybody who's keeping their own yaml (IIRC this is at least Sheep?), note that the latest release changed progression balancing from an on/off to a numeric sliding scale. If you want it to match the old "on", set the value to 50. You can set it to a lower value to still have some degree of balancing, but reduced impact. Or higher if you want the fill to try to keep you ahead of the progression curve (I don't recommend this for async, or at all really)

That's the beautiful part of playing asynchronously. One game probably takes about 3-4 hours (Could easily be less though, depending on the specific game you're playing and how the randomizer shakes out), and these generally take us somewhere between 4-7 days.

You just play whenever you want/can until you're done, and it doesn't rely on you to be available at specific times or even at the same time as other people. There's almost no chance you'll be able to finish your game in one sitting, so it'll get broken up into smaller sessions of, say, maybe 15-20 minutes each. Once you've done everything you can with what the randomizer's given you, you can just check in after a few hours to see if the situation has changed and there's more you can do

If you're saying that your availability is less than that though, then that's just an oof and you have my condolences for being so busy.

Like Reg said, it doesn't matter if you aren't available 24/7. All I'd ask is that you be available for at least an hour or two on the first weekend (Monday at the latest) because each game's early checks often contain at least something important for someone else. Then you can return whenever you have time during the week.

I haven't played it, but stars are randomized, so when you get a star it's an item for someone and other people send you stars. You still need to receive 70 to reach Bowser.

I think other stuff might be shuffled too, like keys, caps, and even cannon access, but those might be optional settings

I do it around 11 am PST, which is noon my timezone, but so long as you're available sometime that weekend it doesn't matter when you start

We'll be doing this asynchronously, so people can play whenever they have time. Items sent out are saved in the Archipelago server, so when people join they'll get any new stuff and anything they send gets sent out when that player joins.

Sorry about not finishing the last multiworld, I found out the hard way that saves do not transfer across different PCs, and by the time I got back home everyone else had finished (don't know how to forfeit from Timespinner either).

Really want to do Sonic but I don't have it yet on PC, gonna wait for a sale. So I'll go back to Super Metroid. I joined the discord and sent the yaml file there. This time I'll rando the starting location and leaving it up to chance whether the boss locations are randomized or stay vanilla

That brings us to 17 games!

I did a test generation last night with everything but the Lolo games and it worked. It took a really long time though, OoT really slows it down for some reason and with this many OoTs it took like half an hour.

So the cutoff for joining is twenty minutes from now! After that I'll be generating the multiworld to hopefully post it within an hour from now

Something to keep in mind is that you have to roll locally and upload to the site if you want to have more than 20 worlds. Not likely to be an issue this time with a 20 minute deadline and 17 worlds, but for the future maybe, since we've got a few people who expressed interest but didn't wind up joining.

I don't know if anybody here is using it, but I also know that OOT Entrance Randomizer is rather frail. Can cause outright failures in a lot of situations, but iirc it's slow even when successful, largely because of this

I'm doing a dungeon entrance shuffle, and Megaman has a bunch of different entrance shufflers enabled. Probably doesn't help that we both did shop and scrubsanity and Megaman also did skullsanity.

There it is, have fun everyone! Remember that the room goes dormant after 6 hours of inactivity, but all you need to do is refresh the room page and it'll start up again. It's a good idea to do that before playing just to be sure.

We have two new people participating this time, so I hope you don't have any trouble following the setup guides on the Archipelago website and getting connected. You'll probably have at least an item or two coming your way pretty quick after this starts, so if you begin playing and don't receive anything there might be a problem.

We've had a good bit of progress today!

In my Hollow Knight, I only have Mantis Claw, Descending Dark, Isma's Tear, and Lumafly Lantern, which is an odd combination. I've gotten to most places in the game but without dash or double jump I've been limited in how much I can get. Still, I think I've done pretty good for day one

In general, it's an alternate goal that both Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past support, where you find X (Generally 20 or 30 in my experience) pieces out of Y (Usually X+10) available, and once you find the specified amount you win, potentially without having to kill a single boss

I don't think SMZ3 supports it, but it might.

Older versions of lttp were just "you win instantly, warp to triforce room". Newer versions added a guy outside of Hyrule Castle that warps you to triforce room because some people didn't like it being instant.

I think OoT is just the same "instant win, warp to credits", but not 100% sure. @Tom_Bombadil can confirm though

SM done, ice beam and spazer were the only two items missing. Somehow with random starting area on I still ended up starting at the ship. I wonder if that's more likely to happen if I have early morph ball on

I've beat 3 SM bosses, one lttp dungeon. I think I need the moon pearl to proceed though (doesn't look like anyone needs anything in my non-required dungeons yet -- at least on the hints).

Edit: oh yeah! someone gave me bombs, so I can do the CF clip to botwoon. SM down.

Well I even sent Aecioo a PM that was read a few hours ago and got no response. I don't want to rush anyone but I think it's reasonable to at least expect someone to check in and say when they expect to start.

Since we have people waiting for items from that Rogue Legacy, I vote we either forfeit or have someone else take that slot over if we don't hear anything by tomorrow.
