I hate when this stuff happens. I've almost been hit by cars a few times myself.

It didn't really come out of nowhere. I could see it coming from pretty far away. I never assume a car will stop for me just because I'm in a walkway

People dont freaking pay attention. Heck, I almost died yesterday when a massive SUVs accelerator stuck and floored it at me by accident. It missed me, but the guy couldnt stop and bailed out of the car at like 40mph or something. The car smashed into a tree. Granted, it wasnt because he wasnt paying attention, but I feel less and less safe being around these modern drivers and massive cars.

Not surprised. A LOT of people have zero idea how crosswalks work. Also LOL at the topic being locked because of r/all.

In my experience, crosswalks on busy streets just make you a target. I try to avoid them but can't always do that. When I inevitably get hit, I hope to find that sweet spot of hurt enough to get paid but not enough to be seriously injured or maimed.

Not that I'm saying it was his fault. It wasn't. Cars don't understand crosswalks, sure.

But maybe put the phone down when walking across the street?

He's got the right of way but man, I would never just walk across and trust that cars will stop. I would wait first until someone stops before crossing.

This, the redditor should have common sense and not assume everyone will respect rules. Kind of basic when going out.

I regularly get laughed at for checking crosswalks before crossing. "They're all like "I'll just sue if I get hit."

Yup
Car should have stopped for sure, but this is exactly why you wait to make sure cars are actually stopping before you just walk out into traffic, and why you need to be aware of your surroundings instead of fucking with your phone

seriously, and I thought victim blaming on this board was bad lmao

I do get hes got the right of way but a car going that speed still is gonna bowl over you braking into you. Cant trust anyone in cars but pedestrians are crazy and just walking into streets all over too. Every time I see that its the same; head down looking at a phone with ear buds in.

Graveyards are full of people who had the right of way.

Obviously the cars fault but the idea of walking through a cross-walking while looking down at your phone's recording is scary.

Stupid situation on both parties

Pedestrians far too often think the white stripes of the crosswalk will save their lives, so they just walk into the street without bothering to really look (or looking but not breaking stride regardless of traffic). The fact that this is posted on a "fuck cars" subreddit, along with the notion that filming yourself all the time makes it look like you're looking to get hit, just makes this whole thing reek of stupidity.

Yes, the driver legally should've stopped. But the whole "I'll get paid!!!!!!" angle is fucking stupid if it means risking paralysis or a horribly reduced quality of life from there on.
