I tried to take more time off this year but I still have 3 weeks to use up before end of year...

I wish my company paid out PTO.

I lose like 2 weeks of PTO a year because I don't use them.

Take off 1 hour early every day. Or come in 1 hour late every day.

Company doesn't allow partial days. Which honestly I don't understand.

At one of my old jobs you could donate PTO to other employees if you felt they needed it more

My company only does that if the person requests it due to emergency. Which it seems like my company is very good about that. A dude's wife got cancer and the company all donated enough for him to spend about the last 7 months with his wife.

Take the time off, and get a part-time job for the period you're not working.

It's Halloween season - get a job working at a haunted house for a couple weeks.

Or wait until December, and then get a job at a retail store where they hire temp employees for the holiday rush.

Mostly because of this:

If you could take 1-2 hours off, you wouldn't feel as guilty about it, so you'd use up more of your PTO. Because you have to take full days, you feel guilty, so it goes unused and eventually expires, giving the company more labour for their salary dollars.

System is designed in a way this really doesn't work.
This is also why I only take 3 weeks off a year and they are the 3 most convenient to take off.

My company gives us PTO hours instead of days so you can request a half day. I actually take advantage of this because I'm salary whereas some other aren't. I'll leave early or come in late if I have a doctor's appointment or something else i need to do without requesting off. I'm in management and big boss is in another state so as long as everything is getting done I'm good. But I also do work hard at my job and work overtime a decent amount so i don't feel guilty taking an hour or two here and there without requesting off. The guys I work with like me and don't make a stink about it because I also give them leeway when they need to do things outside of work. And I get about 15 work days pto in total hours. Not amazing but many people get 2 weeks or less

request a half day
There's no value in taking half of a day in remote work. If you want to take half of a day just go MIA around lunch.

Then just take a full day and play video games. If you have pto, use it

Mine does the hourly thing. So, I could come in late or leave early. But in the end, that doesnt really matter because I make my own hours during the week. As long as I get my 80 every pay period, Im good. If Im over, it get converted into more hours to take off. If Im under, I just use some PTO hours to bump it up to 80 And I usually still have plenty of time to take off and see my family. And if Im leaving halfway through a pay period, I sometimes work extra hours the first week so I can use less time off for the next week It helps a little

Yeah. Theres no reason to just let it get wasted

Ive known so many people who hoarded their PtO. Either because they felt guilty for using it, which just boggles my mind, or because they would rather be at work than at home

ive never understood either but as long as youre not letting your employer steal from you via the cap or use or or lose it, whatever

Why would you feel guilty if you earned it? Why do you even feel guilty?
My work generally is use or lose until recently cause of covid. The closest I got to losing it was my first year of an earned week's vacation, and I used it about a month or so before it expired.
I plan it out and almost need it. Work can drive you crazy and time off can make you so much better.

Some people hoard it like they do recovery items in Final Fantasy. There's always the worry that you'll need them at some point later on due to circumstances beyond your control, so you don't want to waste them on frivolous things. So then they pile up. And eventually you've got like 10 months worth of days off stored up.

Ive never worked at a place that allows that much to pile up. Usually its 3-5 years worth and most people end up with like 6 weeks at that point. So like 3-5 months. Which is still too damned much. Especially when companies complain if you use it or more than a week at a time anyway. But yeah, I can see the hoard for later potential use thing too.
