I liked the first section and parts of the first few areas you're sent out towards after that. Then the game lost my interest to the point where I looked up the ending and... then I've ended up swearing off thhe franchise from this game-onward, no matter how good or "return to form" the upcoming AC game may look by the trailer.

Right. Even in AC4 and Syndicate, the collectathon is the worst part of either game, so I only do what is on the way between greater objectives. Actually, this extends to II, Brotherhood, and Origins as well, though Origins pushed it a step further than previous titles in repetitive objectives peppering the map. You only need so much; and probably only have so much tome or energy to commit to it.

I really enjoyed Origins and Odyssey, but like 100 hours into Odyssey I was getting really burned out. I thought about skipping Valhalla and I wish I did because I started getting burned out like 20 hours in and ended up finishing it with well over 100 hours lmao I'm a glutton for punishment

Definitely skipping on the series for a while though. I need a fucking break.

I really enjoyed Valhalla for the combat and exploration and the ship stuff, but these games are just too fucking big and I honestly don't give a shit about the story or characters any more

The original AC was so bad that I never touched any AC game ever again.

Haven't had a chance to play Valhalla yet. Odyssey was fun but I wish they kept the series as a stealth series instead of turning it into an action adventure RPG.

I saw the original as the open beta for things to come, but with a story of its own attached that served, also, as the backstory to the first real game of the series - AC2.

I enjoyed Origins. It was different to the older AC games and that felt refreshing. Odyssey sadly was a grind too much for me and that's a shame as I enjoy greek mythology. Valhalla however was less of a grind for me. I enjoy the Viking theme too. I admit I've not bought and of the DLC and probably never will but it's not bad.

The first game is still one of my favourites in the series simply because you were more of a Assassin. I'm happy to see Mirage might be heading back to those roots.

The level caps in Odyssey to even progress in the story were terrible. Valhalla was more giving on XP and the recommended level caps are not as bad in my experience.

Again, it was a sort of beta test with the backstory attached. The people who bought the first game were the test audience, and the second game had already been started in its pre-development. Once the demographics were good, Ubisoft said, "OK, we're doing the thing we were planning to do anyways. Good job, us." And the series was born.

A large part of why I passed on Valhalla is because I find the current batch of present-day characters utterly fucking loathesome. I don't really care that those parts are probably like .02% of the game, I find them unlikable enough that it retroactively kills my interest in engaging with any of the rest of it.

Desmond could be a bit of a dipshit at times, and his story wound up being a bit plodding and unfocused, but I'd take him back any day compared to what we have now. Hell, I really enjoyed the "nameless, faceless Ubisoft employee" segments in Black Flag and Rogue and would love to have those back. Fuck Layla and her poorly written Millennial Twitter brigade.

How about when Ubisoft changed the description of a minor character since some troll complained about it?

I'm currently in the second part of the Atlantis DLC in Odyssey and I'm excited to get to Valhalla (...eventually). I've seen a lot of people say that it's much more busy work and maybe I'll eat these words when I finally get to Valhalla but I actually kinda like the checklisty nature of the current Assassin's Creed.

I personally find Layla extremely bleh. Her acting doesn't seem great and her team are just kinda annoying. I don't really remember any of their names but the doctor lady (Victoria maybe?) is too much of a worry wort and she just isn't a fun character at all (which I suppose is the point but ugh). I want Shaun and Rebecca back.

Layla was fine through Origins, but became as "special" as basically every companion from Moffat era Doctor Who in the following game. Then by Valhalla, they had about as much direction for her as DW's writers did for Peri during Sixth's run, leading to her being killed off and, I kid you not, being replaced by the antagonist of Valhalla and none of your Assassin crew since II connecting the dots or asking the real questions.

I wanted to love Valhalla because of my heritage, but the game was bad overall for a plethora of reasons.

One of the . . . better H games I tried for sort-of-morbid-curiosity reasons has a roguelike mode, and it's kind of decent. It's not my own thing, but I like that it's there because it fits the theme of the game almost as well as its plot and sidequests system.
