What album should we cover for HBJDubs' week?

Previous results can be seen here:
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks_Set_2

The rules:
1. Listen to the album in full
2. Rank every track on the album
3. For the results, there will be a curve at the top of each list; two additional points between #1 and #2, and one additional point for the next two ranks. This way, the songs that really stick out to someone get an edge that is not immediately negated by someone else putting it lower. In the case of Demon Days, someone's 15th track will get 1 point, 14th 2 points, 4th 12 points, 3rd 14 points, 2nd 16 points, and 1st 19 points. For albums with greater than 15 tracks, everything ranked below #15 will be given 0 points and the scale for the top 15 will be the same as a 15-track album. For albums with more than 20 tracks, you only have to list your top 15 (with 16-20, I still like having the average rank listed)
4. If you want to include comments for individual songs, I will compile them in the results
5. The results will be posted at the beginning of the next topic
6. The deadline to vote is Sunday, December 11 at 8:00 AM EST - though I have recently been leaving them up for longer, so just try to vote by that afternoon
7. You can sign up to be added to the user cycle (a new user will be added to the end of the current cycle as long as there are four weeks remaining) - the next person on the list will choose 3 albums which the other users will vote on for the next topic.
7a. To ensure people are being given an actual choice, the three nominated albums must be by different artists. You can otherwise stick to a similar sound or era.
7b. The tiebreaker for these polls will be whichever is listed first in the poll options - make sure to deliver the results in order of your own preference (which will hopefully have the added benefit of influencing people toward your first choice if they can't decide).
7c. I have added a tiered vote structure - the least popular album will be removed and its backup votes distributed to the other two entrants.
8. Starting with the next cycle, every four weeks will be a competitive week where those listed choose a single album to face off against others.

The American Idiot topic is still open for a bit, if you were still planning to vote

HBJDubs on the choices this week:
"Let's introduce some power metal, one of my favorite genres. These three are some of the most well-known in power metal. For the album choices, I tend to pick albums that I speculate may have a high variance in #1 ranked songs. Some minor differences among them, at least pertaining to these albums: Blind Guardian usually throws in elements of speed metal, Kamelot has more symphonic qualities, and Sonata Arctica is more traditional power. Finally, here are examples from each band

Sonata Arctica - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7FABPQi8pI
Blind Guardian - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPG7gYoqpHM
Kamelot - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otFZzdNuJwQ

I think I would have gotten around to Sonata Arctica at some point. Was a fan of theirs up through Unia. Been a while since I listened to them.

Surprised to see 2 bands Ive listened to before in the poll. I was also into Blind Guardian back during college but I cant say they stuck with me.

First listen done.

I think Im going to need to see a doctor from the genre whiplash this album gave me. This is gonna be one of those albums where every song is in someones top 5 and someone elses bottom 5.

Not an unejoyable listen but one that will definitely need more listens to digest.

Yeah the first song was like okay alright. Then the next is a complete tonal shift and its like okay one of THOSE albums. Then there was some stuff I was a little eh on. Then one that is COMPLETELY different than the songs around it and Im like the fuck!?!

In reading their bio on Spotify this kind of seems like its their thing to be all over the map and not be pigeon holed.

General Album Comments

FoolFantastic: As previously established, I'm not the biggest fan of pop punk, but it's hard to deny the strength of Green Day's two signature albums. Four songs from American Idiot sit solidly near my all-time top 1000 range - if there is one problem with this album, it's that three of those four sit at the front. Other than that common issue (and it's not like any of the others are bad), American Idiot is a striking work that finds a perfect balance between the band's pop punk history and the elevated emotions of a rock opera. I have faint memories of this receiving a lot of backlash at the time (I was 11 when it came out, so I wasn't completely tuned into the music scene), but it's hard to think of another album that better captures the spirit of the aughts in retrospect considering both the musical style and lyrical themes.

Snake5555555555: What a god damn classic.

Johnbobb: This is like top 3 albums of all time for me. I legitimately hate ranking any song on this album low, I love them all too much.

Seanchan (responding to Snake): I cannot agree any harder! I hadn't listened to this in years and it was "holy fuck, I forgot how good this is!"

What's funny is that while I love this album, I'm not otherwise much of a fan of Green Day. I've enjoyed their various singles/radio hits but never did a deep dive on them, despite being a fan of pop punk (blink, Sum 41, etc.) The follow up to this, 21st Century Breakdown, didn't grab me; I've listened to it but damn if I remember anything about it.

And I never listened to their earlier stuff at all. So, after listening to American Idiot, I finally did a listen to Dookie. Hard to get too critical from one listen, but I'll say that it didn't grab me. I recognized 5-6 songs from radio play but even with that, I can't say I was too impressed overall.

SeabassDebeste: i don't listen to many albums, especially front to back repeatedly. this album is definitely an exception, one of my favorite of all time (out of an admittedly limited pool), so here i am.

ChichiriMuyo: A great artist with an uneven album. The highest highs it hits are so amazing, but plenty of tracks drag the album as a whole down. There are two songs over nine minutes? Ugh. Sometimes this album makes me ask "is this really Green Day?" I just don't know how you can open on an absolute 10/10 banger and follow it up with a 9 minute slogfest. Still, the top songs make it worth it.

Raetsel_Lapin: I love this album & actually briefly considered putting it in as one of my nominations as a popular compromise, but someone else picked it. Yay!

BlueCrystalTear: There's not a single bad song on this album, and there's enough pace-changers to make it a thoroughly engaging listen from top to bottom despite it nearly totaling an hour in length. There are definitely themes and even recurring characters; I heard St. Jimmy and Whatshername mentioned in other songs, an intentional concept that Billie Joe and Tre Cool (who was the other guy?) spun to make this album cohesive. Even if some of the political commentary wasn't accurate, some of it was. And then we have the singles that weren't quite part of the storyline, the timeless songs that stand out.

Honestly, ranking this is tough. #1 and #2 could have reversed order, as could #3 and #4. #5 to #9 could be in ANY order, and #11 and #12 could be flipped. That should show you how damn good everything is; really, the only one I didn't like as much was "St. Jimmy" but that's not to say it's bad. It's just less my thing than anything else.

StifledSilence: Pretty great album. Im a sucker for a set of songs that tell a story, so a whole album of storytelling is extra nice. Ive always felt Holiday didnt really fit in the story, but thats a minor nitpick. None of the songs are bad, which makes it flow pretty well. I listened to this a TON when I was a teenager, Homecoming and Jesus of Suburbia in particular. Turns out I still enjoy it.

jcgamer107: While it's no Dookie, American Idiot is pretty friggin good - definitely Green Day's 2nd best album. There are several great singles here, which partly made up the soundtrack to my senior year of high school. I think the only things that kept me from becoming more than a casual Green Day fan, is that a lot of their songs sound really similar, and Billie Joe occasionally includes lyrics that sound like they were written by an emo middle-schooler. Still, his vocals & the trio's musical chemistry cannot be denied.

Great_Paul: This is one of those albums where I enjoy every song, so it was a tough one for me to rank. The top 4 were especially difficult to order. I wouldn't consider myself to be a big Green Day fan, but this is definitely in my top 5 favourite albums.

HBJDubs: The last really great Green Day album

ZaziGuado: Put me among the list of people with high school nostalgia for this album. A rare album that received three listens from me this week. I think I could have ten different orders of these tracks with ten different listens.

Seanchan: Just a phenomenal album from start to finish. A tough one to rank because there's no bad songs, plus I've heard it enough to appreciate at least a part of every song. It pains me to rank Boulevard that low but this is just a very strong album.

MetalmindStats: Some of these songs felt so familiar that I might as well have heard them before.

American Idiot track ranking

13. Extraordinary Girl (Track #9)
Score: 67 (Average Rank: 9.81/13)
Biggest Fan(s): darkx (#5)
Biggest Detractor(s): Johnbobb, ZaziGuado (#13)

12. She's a Rebel (Track #8)
Score: 79 (Average Rank: 9.06/13)
Biggest Fan(s): Seanchan (#5)
Biggest Detractor(s): firefdr, darkx, HBJDubs (#13)

SeabassDebeste: Catchy and upbeat and inoffensive; I like the chorus of it a decent amount. Best part of this is "She sings, the revolution, the dawning of our lives" hook of the chorus.

11. St. Jimmy (Track #6)
Score: 83 (Average Rank: 9.19/13)
Biggest Fan(s): firefdr (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): BlueCrystalTear, MetalmindStats (#13)

10. Are We the Waiting (Track #5)
Score: 84 (Average Rank: 8.94/13)
Biggest Fan(s): Raetsel_Lapin (#2)
Biggest Detractor(s): ChichiriMuyo, jcgamer107, Seanchan (#13)

9. Give Me Novacaine (Track #7)
Score: 106 (Average Rank: 7.69/13)
Biggest Fan(s): Raetsel_Lapin, BlueCrystalTear, StifledSilence, Great_Paul, Seanchan (#3)
Biggest Detractor(s): firefdr, darkx, Johnbobb (#12)

SeabassDebeste: Fun middle-of-the-album track; I enjoy the "floaty," almost tropical sounds and love the way the chorus goes from heavy downbeats and rising tension to the easy, melodic resolution of Give me novaca-aine.

8. Whatsername (Track #13)
Score: 108 (Average Rank: 7.63/13)
Biggest Fan(s): ZaziGuado (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): FoolFantastic, Great_Paul (#12)

darkx: This would DEFINITELY be higher if we were rating the Broadway Cast version. A much better build-up to the finale.

SeabassDebeste: Real simple, lyrical piece to close out a weaker second half of the album. Has a timeless sound to it. jcgamer107: I hadn't heard this one before but damn

7. Homecoming (Track #12)
Score: 112 (Average Rank: 7.69/13)
Biggest Fan(s): StifledSilence, Great_Paul (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): FoolFantastic, SeabassDebeste, Raetsel_Lapin (#13)

jcgamer107: Well that was long. Lol the saxophone.

6. Letterbomb (Track #10)
Score: 126 (Average Rank: 6.44/13)
Biggest Fan(s): darkx, Great_Paul (#2)
Biggest Detractor(s): BlueCrystalTear, MetalmindStats (#12)

darkx: What an underrated banger.

SeabassDebeste: This song "rocks" the hardest on this album. I'm not huge on the chorus, but the opening verses and , and especially that middling Where will all the martyrs go when the virus kills itself are near-chills level. I keep thinking that I'm overrating this song because it comes in the middle of a bunch of mediocre/bad songs but it only gets better when I repeatedly listen to it - it's a standout from beginning to end.

jcgamer107: Well the opening lyrics didn't have to be so ACCURATE geez

5. American Idiot (Track #1)
Score: 140 (Average Rank: 5.81/13)
Biggest Fan(s): ChichiriMuyo (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): Snake5555555555 (#13)

darkx: This would probably be higher if we were rating the Broadway Cast version. Great harmonies in there.

SeabassDebeste: Angry, catchy, great stuff.

jcgamer107: I think I might like Canadian Idiot better

4. Holiday (Track #3)
Score: 143 (Average Rank: 5.88/13)
Biggest Fan(s): Snake5555555555, Seanchan (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): StifledSilence, Great_Paul (#13)

SeabassDebeste: Simple and awesome. Love the riff, the verses, the melody. This song and American Idiot most encapsulate the "punk sound" of the album to me.

3. Wake Me Up When September Ends (Track #11)
Score: 168 (Average Rank: 4.63/13)
Biggest Fan(s): SeabassDebeste, BlueCrystalTear, jcgamer107, MetalmindStats (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): Johnbobb (#9)

SeabassDebeste: When I first heard this song, I already really enjoyed its clean, soft, simple melody and mournful, nostalgic tone - even if I found parts of it cheesy with some wonky lyrics and frustrating off-rhymes (rests/lost?) Well over a decade later, after a major September breakup, losing a parent, and a September wedding, this song has never left my mind. it's kind of impossible to me not to have this one at the top.

jcgamer107: In the 2nd verse, when the full guitar riff & drum groove come in for the first time - that's probably the best moment on the album. I had a pretty rough time towards the end of this September, and was thinking about this song a lot.

2. Boulevard of Broken Dreams (Track #4)
Score: 175 (Average Rank: 4.25/13)
Biggest Fan(s): Raetsel_Lapin, HBJDubs (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): Seanchan (#11)

SeabassDebeste: It's just so accessible, almost an ideal pop-rock type of song. Could do without the lengthy outro though. I was entering this album thinking that this might be likely one of my top songs, but I put off listening to it for a while. But the moment it actually hit, so, so good.

Raetsel_Lapin: One of my favorite songs. I love this track and I'm so happy that we didn't pair it with Holiday as one giant track... Holiday is fine, but I do *not* enjoy having to sit through it to get to the track I really want to hear.

1. Jesus of Suburbia (Track #2)
Score: 177 (Average Rank: 4/13)
Biggest Fan(s): FoolFantastic, darkx, Johnbobb (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): jcgamer107 (#11)

darkx: Maybe my favorite Green Day track. So much great stuff in here.

SeabassDebeste: Feels like Green Day's version of Bohemian Rhapsody. I like/love about 90% of it and for a song that's this long, ambitious, and varied, that's incredible.

Imo Ween's best album from start to finish. I would put the opening 3 tracks up against the first 3 tracks of any other album. If you don't like the style of the current song....just wait till the next one.

1) Transdermal Celebration

It's hard to describe how I felt the first time I heard the guitar solo. It was an overwhelming, spiritual experience, like God reaching down from heaven to take my hand and tell me everything's going to be okay. My 3rd eye was opened and I think I almost cried.

2) It's Gonna Be a Long Night

This is how you start an album. I want this played at my funeral.... because I will instantly revive and start partying. A great tribute to Motorhead-type bands.

3) Happy Colored Marbles

Love how it goes from weird psychedelic sound to an explosion of insane energy 2 minutes in

4) Chocolate Town

So soothing, a 10/10 song for summer driving with the windows down

5) Zoloft

A little hypocritical, since, for a long time, Gene and Dean had no problem with recreational drugs lol. Still, it's a good song - definitely captures the 'uncomfortably numb' feeling some psych meds can give you. Gimme that P-R-O-Z-A-C.

6) The Argus

To me this is like 'The Mollusk' 2.0 - another track that sounds like a folk song about some ancient mythical creature

7) Tried and True

Very nice acoustic guitar

8) Hey There Fancypants

Hehe funny fancypants song

9) Among His Tribe

Really cool soundscape here, especially in the bridge

10) I Don't Want It

relatable :(

11) So Many People in the Neighborhood

Paranoia in musical form

12) The Fucked Jam

Is it fucked? Yes. But is it a jam? Yes.

13) If You Could Save Yourself (You'd Save Us All)

14) Captain

Captaaaiinnnnnnn....hurry up and skip this song

15) Alcan Road

The only forgettable track on the album

Did a first listen yesterday, forgot to post anything about that.

First impression: A rare example of an album that has numerous stylistic shifts that isn't jarring so much as shocking how it can be pulled off. It's awesome in how it can shift yet still sound like a cohesive whole; for an extremely different reason than Green Day, the sequencing matters quite a lot, and a different order might've felt disjointed.

Will do another 1-2 listens in the coming days. Not sure how many I'll get in though.

the first Ween album I listened to took at least like 4 listens to even know if I actually liked it. This one is similarly all over the place, but I think it's actually a little more comprehensible than that one was, with at least some stylistic similarities song-to-song, and just so many killer tracks along the way. They're so bizarre but I also really dig them, and Ween might be slowly squeezing its way into being one of my favorite bands

  1. So Many People in the Neighborhood - I cannot explain why I love this song as much as I do

  3. Tried and True
  4. Transdermal Celebration

  12. Chocolate Town
  13. Among His Tribe
  14. Alcan Road
  15. The Fucked Jam - I got frustrated listening to this because my spotify when hooked up to my car sometimes randomly pauses itself or skips and I couldn't tell if that was happening or if that was part of the song

I enjoyed this album. It's super quirky and dynamic, while having strengths that they go back to. The melancholy and introspective tracks stand out to me, as well as the atmospheric tracks. And the 'strange' songs keep things lively. After the first few songs in my ranking, I have a handful that I enjoyed more than the others. That said, I could see much of this list shuffling around based on mood.

I Don't Want It
Transdermal Celebration
If You Could Save Yourself
Happy Colored Marbles
Tried And True
Zoloft
Among His Tribe
The Argus
So Many People In The Neighborhood
Chocolate Town
Captain
Alcan Road
The f***ed Jam
It's Gonna Be a Long Night
Hey There Fancypants

This album honestly feels like it took songs from four different projects and wove them together in the order they fit the best. On a song-by-song basis, it's quite strong, with only four and a half songs I'd consider not my jam for either being way too sleepy or like murder on my ears.

  1. Transdermal Celebration - This is just a banger.
  2. Chocolate Town - Hard to believe this country-rock song is on the same album as some of the others!
  3. I Don't Want It
  4. The Argus - Something about this one feels familiar for whatever reason.
  5. If You Could Save Yourself (You'd Save Us All)
  6. Among His Tribe - The first amazingly atmospheric song on the album, and for good reason since it's the best of them.
  7. Tried and True - A nice acoustic pace-changer. I like those better than the others.
  8. Hey There Fancypants
  9. Zoloft - Would be higher if not for the weird sound effects that distract me too much.
  10. It's Gonna Be a Long Night
  11. Happy Colored Marbles - First half is catchy as can be. The last minute is like somebody dropped a nuclear bomb on it, and this ruins the song.
  12. The Fucked Jam - Is this thing working? That's the point, I get it, but it's still weird.
  13. Captain - zzzzz
  14. Alcan Road - Forgettable filler that goes on too long. A worse version of "Captain."
  15. So Many People in the Neighborhood - This is awful. Just awful. Sorry, Johnbobb. It feels like I'm taking acid and puking my guts out... it's also just six words long.

There's a lot to like here, despite (or perhaps because of?) how manic it is with the genre changes. With that said, this isn't an album that's strong front to back. There's a tier of songs I like (my ranked 1-6), another tier I'm okay on (my ranked 7-10/11), and then the not so good ones (10/11-15).

So Many People in the Neighborhood - I can see why some people wouldn't like this song (especially in the lyrics department), but if you give me a song that sounds like this on a mostly rock(?) album, of course I'm gonna like it.

The Fucked Jam - I would like this song if it had any more substance. But as of right now it's basically nothing at all. With just a bit more I could see this being like my #3 or something.

If the results haven't been tallied yet, I'd like to swap Happy Colored Marbles and So Many People in the Neighborhood on my official submission. Marbles has become my clear favorite in the days since I posted my list.
